(From *Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang*)
Treats irregular diet in summer, internal injury from cold and raw food, external invasion of summer-heat pathogen, alternating chills and fever, cholera with vomiting and diarrhea; as well as latent summer-heat causing irritability, fatigue, and excessive sleepiness.
Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus), Huo Xiang (Agastachis Herba), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum), Bian Dou (Dolichoris Semen), Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chi Fu Ling (Poria cum Ligno Rubra), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Decoct with Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus). For summer-heat injury, add Xiang Ru (Elsholtziae Herba); for cold injury, add Zi Su (Perillae Folium). One version lacks Bai Zhu, another contains Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma).
This is a formula for the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Huo Xiang, Sha Ren, Xing Ren, and Hou Po have aromatic properties that soothe the Spleen Qi, and pungent flavors that promote Qi movement, while Sha Ren and Hou Po also transform food stagnation; Mu Gua has a sour flavor that pacifies the Liver and relaxes sinews (Liver Wood overacting on Spleen Earth causes spasms/twitching; Mu Gua's sourness astringes Lung Metal, assisting Lung Metal to pacify Liver Pathogens, thus treating cholera spasms); Bian Dou and Chi Fu Ling have bland flavors that leach out Dampness and clear Heat, while Bian Dou also dissipates summer-heat and harmonizes the Spleen; Ban Xia is pungent and warm, descending rebellious Qi and stopping vomiting; Ren Shen and Bai Zhu are sweet and warm, tonifying Righteous Qi to support against pathogens; Gan Cao tonifies the Middle Jiao and harmonizes all herbs; Sheng Jiang and Da Zao disperse and harmonize Ying and Wei Qi; all these serve to "harmonize". Some add Xiang Ru to dispel summer-heat; some add Zi Su to release the exterior and scatter cold. (Wu Hegao said: "Liu He" refers to harmonizing the Six Fu Organs. The Spleen and Stomach are the commanders of the Six Fu Organs; first regulating them allows water and essence to distribute everywhere, the Five Channels run together, and all orifices achieve great harmony. Wang Ang notes: "Liu He" refers to harmonizing the Six Qi. If one speaks of harmonizing the Six Fu Organs, does it mean the Five Zang Organs should not be harmonized? Roughly, Wind, Cold, Summer-heat, Dampness, Dryness, and Fire Qi are frequently contracted in summer, so various drugs are used to rectify the Spleen and Stomach to resist these pathogens...)
(From *Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang*)
Treats external contraction of Wind-Cold, internal injury from diet, aversion to cold with high fever, headache, vomiting and regurgitation, fullness and oppression in the chest and diaphragm, cough and asthma; as well as cold injury, dampness injury, malaria, summer-heat stroke, cholera with vomiting and diarrhea; suitable for modification and use in cases of infection by miasmic and abnormal qi (Use with caution in persons with deficient Yuan Qi).
Huo Xiang (Agastachis Herba), Zi Su Ye (Perillae Folium), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium), Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried with soil), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Ban Xia Qu (Pinelliae Fermentatum), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, processed with ginger juice), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Dosages: Fu Ling 3 liang, Jie Geng 2 liang, Gan Cao 1 liang. Take 5 qian per dose. Decoct with Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus). One version adds Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus) (astringes when Qi is depleted, harmonizes when Qi is stagnant). For severe food stagnation, add digestive herbs.
This is a formula for the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Huo Xiang is pungent and warm, regulates Qi and harmonizes the Middle, expels evil and stops vomiting, treats both exterior and interior, serving as the Sovereign herb; Zi Su, Bai Zhi, and Jie Geng disperse cold and benefit the diaphragm, assisting to release exterior pathogens; Hou Po and Da Fu Pi move Water and reduce fullness, Chen Pi and Ban Xia descend rebellious Qi and eliminate phlegm, assisting to relieve interior stagnation; Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, and Gan Cao benefit the Spleen and remove Dampness to support Righteous Qi, serving as Minister and Envoy herbs. When Righteous Qi flows smoothly, pathogenic rebellion is naturally eliminated. (Wu Shou said: If it is Taiyang Cold Damage with headache, fever, and bone/joint pain, this formula is completely irrelevant; if misused, even if sweating occurs, it will not resolve, often leading to complicated syndromes. It is contraindicated for Cold Damage with fever and deep pulse, persons with deficient Yuan Qi, and those with Yin-deficiency Cold Damage with fever. Dai Yanli said: Obese people are prone to Stroke because Qi is abundant externally but deficient internally... Phlegm... Taking this medicine not only treats Stroke syndromes, but is especially suitable for Qi Collapse, Evil Invasion, and Cholera.)
Combining this formula with the three-ingredient Xiang Ru Yin (Xiang Ru, Bian Dou, Huang Lian) creates Huo Ru Tang: Treats latent summer-heat causing vomiting, diarrhea, and spasms.
