[Baijin Wan (Platinum Pill)]
Treats dian and kuang with loss of heart-mind (Dian is characterized by excessive laughter but still knowing fear, belonging to deficiency syndromes; Kuang is characterized by anger and inability to control oneself, belonging to excess syndromes. This disease is often caused by fright, worry, phlegm, and blood stasis blocking the orifices of the Heart. The *Nan Jing* states: Yang disorders lead to Kuang, Yin disorders lead to Dian. Laughter belongs to the Heart, anger belongs to the Liver; both meridians involve Fire).
Bai Fan (Alum, 3 liang) Yu Jin (Curcuma Aromatica Rhizome, 7 liang). Form pills using Mint paste.
This acts on the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Bai Fan is sour and salty, capable of softening stubborn Phlegm; Yu Jin is bitter and acrid, capable of removing bad Blood; once Phlegm and Blood are removed, the Heart orifices open and Phlegm dissipates.
[Changshan Yin (Dichroa Decoction)]
Treats surging Wind-Phlegm, vomiting of saliva and froth, deviation of mouth and eyes, paralysis of hands and feet, and infantile convulsions (all caused by Wind-Phlegm obstructing the collaterals; also diarrhea due to excessive Phlegm, and slippery diarrhea in obese persons, mostly attributed to Phlegm; a slippery pulse indicates Phlegm, lack of appetite and hunger sensation indicates Phlegm).
Bai Fu Zi (Aconitum Kusnezoffii Radix, raw use) Nan Xing (Arisaema Cum Bile, raw use, 2 liang) Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber, soaked in water retaining raw skin, raw use, 7 liang) Chuan Wu (Aconitum Carmichaelii Radix, skin and navel removed, raw use).
Exposed to night dew.
For paralysis, take with wine; for infantile convulsions...
This acts on the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian and Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. The generation of Phlegm arises from Wind, Cold, and Dampness; therefore, the acrid-warm nature of Ban Xia and Nan Xing is used to dry Dampness and scatter Cold, while the acrid-hot nature of Chuan Wu and Bai Fu Zi is used to warm the meridians and expel Wind. Soaking and sun-drying aims to reduce their toxicity (Yu Jiayan stated: This is a superior medicine for treating Wind-Phlegm, however, for Heat-Phlegm confusing...).
Treats stroke with excessive Phlegm, in obese individuals who do not feel thirsty.
Dan Xing (Arisaema Cum Bile, 8 qian) Mu Xiang (Saussurea Root, 2 qian). Grind into powder and take. Alternatively, add Quan Xie (Scorpio).
This acts on the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Nan Xing is a drying Phlegm agent; processing it with ox bile reduces its toxicity, and bile benefits the Liver and Gallbladder (the Liver and Gallbladder meridians belong to Wind-Wood); assisted by Mu Xiang to promote Qi movement to facilitate Phlegm resolution (Mu Xiang can soothe Liver Qi and harmonize Spleen Qi). Obese individuals without thirst indicate the suitability of drying agents. The reason for adding Quan Xie is because...
(From *Ju Fang*)
For malaria that persists for a long time, use this to intercept attacks (Malaria in the initial stage should not be intercepted; if intercepted prematurely, pathogenic factors remain incomplete, leading to other complications; after prolonged onset, it can be intercepted).
Chang Shan (Dichroa Root, stir-fried with rice wine, 2 qian) Cao Guo (Black Cardamom Seed, roasted) Bing Lang (Areca Seed) Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus, 1 qian) Wu Mei (Mume Fructus, 2 pieces). Ginger (3 slices), Jujube (1 piece). Decoct with half wine and half water, expose overnight, and take warm on an empty stomach facing east before sunrise. Use the dregs soaked in wine and decocted, taking them first when the malaria is about to attack. Another formula includes Liang Jiang and Gan...
This acts on the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian and Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Ancient texts state "No Phlegm, No Malaria"; Chang Shan induces vomiting and moves fluids, dispelling old Phlegm and accumulated fluid retention; Bing Lang directs Qi downward and breaks stagnation, digesting food and moving Phlegm. Disharmony of Yin and Yang causes malaria (Yang excess leads to heat, Yin excess leads to cold); Zhi Mu nourishes Yin and treats the solitary excess fire of the Yangming; Cao Guo is acrid and hot, treating the solitary excess cold of the Taiyin; Bei Mu clears fire and disperses nodules, draining heat and eliminating Phlegm; Wu Mei is sour, astringent, and收敛 (astringent), generating fluids and reducing fever (astringing Yin thus reduces fever); combined, they form an antimalarial formula (Zhao Yi-de stated: I have researched Materia Medica, knowing that Zhi Mu, Cao Guo, Chang Shan, Gan Cao, Wu Mei, Bing Lang, and Chuanshanjia are all said to treat malaria. This formula is compiled because Zhi Mu is cold, enters the Foot-Yangming, treats solitary excess heat, causing it to retreat to the Taiyin; Cao Guo is warm and drying, treats Foot-Taiyin solitary excess cold, causing it to retreat to the Yangming; harmony between these two meridians prevents Yin-Yang交错 (interlocking) changes, serving as the Sovereign drug. Chang Shan primarily treats chills and fever malaria, vomiting phlegm knots in the chest, serving as the Minister drug. Gan Cao harmonizes the drugs, Wu Mei removes Phlegm, Bing Lang eliminates Phlegm-piety, breaks stagnant Qi, serving as the Assistant drug. Chuanshanjia lives in caves and enters water, thus entering and exiting Yin and Yang, penetrating collaterals at Ying points to break summer-heat accumulation pathogens, serving as the Guide drug. It is effective only for those with stagnant Phlegm in the Spleen and Stomach. Li Shicai stated: Raw Chang Shan in large doses induces vomiting; combined with Gan Cao, it inevitably induces vomiting. If soaked in wine and thoroughly fried, using only a small amount, miraculous effects are often seen without vomiting. People foolishly adhere to the saying that elderly people with chronic illness should avoid it, causing good medicines to be suspected and deep ailments to remain incurable, how ignorant is this. Li Shizhen stated: Chang Shan and Shu Qi seize Phlegm and intercept malaria, but must be used after releasing exterior pathogens and raising Yang Qi appropriately; combined with Gan Cao it induces vomiting, with Da Huang it promotes purgation, with Wu Mei and Chuanshanjia it enters the Liver, with Xiao Mai and Zhu Ye it enters the Heart, with Shumi and Ma Huang it enters the Lung, with Longgu and Fuzi it enters the Kidney, with Cao Guo and Bing Lang it enters the Spleen. Essentially, no malaria occurs without Phlegm; the efficacy of any single substance lies in expelling Phlegm and water.)
