(Zhang Zihe)
Treats water hernia (Shui Han) caused by cold-dampness, characterized by scrotal swelling and difficulty in urination and defecation. (The scrotum appears transparent like crystal, with continuous sweating from the genital area, termed water hernia, usually resulting from exposure to cold-dampness after excessive drinking.)
Qian Niu (Semen Koelpiniae, 4 liang), Huixiang (Fructus Foeniculi, 1 liang, stir-fried). Grind into powder. Take 1 qian each time, mixed with ginger juice. Alternatively, add Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 1 liang).
These are herbs for the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney meridian and Foot-Taiyang Bladder meridian. Qian Niu is pungent and acrid, capable of reaching the Right Kidney Mingmen (Gate of Vitality), traversing the spermatic channels, promoting diuresis and resolving dampness, while also unblocking wind-constipation and qi-constipation of the Large Intestine; Huixiang is pungent, hot, and warming-dispersing, capable of warming the Dantian and dispelling cold qi in the Small Intestine; both enter the Lower Jiao to drain Yin pathogens.
(Li Dongyuan)
Treats fecal impaction, or tenesmus (feeling of incomplete defecation), frequent trips to the toilet without successful defecation, or stool containing white pus or blood. Do not use purgatives; purging will inevitably lead to severe illness, exacerbating the stagnation and obstruction. Use this decoction to raise Yang Qi, so that Yin Qi will naturally descend. (Wang Ang notes: Using Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) to promote bowel movement follows this principle.)
Cangzhu (Soaked in rice water, 4 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 2 qian), Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1 qian). If diarrhea and borborygmus occur due to Stomach Cold, add Yizhi (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus).
These are herbs for the Foot-Taiyin Spleen meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach meridian. Cangzhu is pungent, warm, drying, and acrid, raising Clear Yang and opening various stagnations, thus serving as the Sovereign herb; Baizhu is sweet and warm, Fuling is sweet and bland, acting as Assistant herbs to strengthen the Spleen and promote diuresis to resolve dampness; Fangfeng is pungent and warm, overcoming dampness and raising Yang, while Shaoyao is sour and cold, astringing Yin and harmonizing the Spleen. (Liu Zongnong states: Food enters the Stomach, its essence is transported to the Heart and Lungs; Qi must ascend first, then descend. If the Spleen and Stomach are injured and cannot ascend, instead flowing downward into the Liver and Kidney causing diarrhea, the treatment method should be to tonify Middle Qi...)
The Classic says: Various symptoms of astringency, dryness, witheredness, rough skin, and scaling all belong to Dryness. This is the Qi of Dry Metal affecting the Lung and the Yangming of the Large Intestine. Metal is the source of generating Water; Cold Water... depletion... scanty fluids... Blood... Fire... lower... heavy... distribution...
(Mr. Shen)
Treats dry cough (cough with sound but no sputum is called dry cough. Dampness in the Spleen generates phlegm, but since this disease does not originate from the Spleen, there is no phlegm; Fire in the Lung causes cough, the root being in the Lung; when Fire is excessive, body fluids are depleted, hence dry cough.)
Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 4 jin), Fuling (Poria, 12 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 6 liang), Baimi (Mel, 2 jin). First, decoct Dihuang to extract the juice and remove dregs, then add honey and refine until thick.
Claimed to be miraculous (Hupo (Electrum) to subdue Lung Qi...)
This is a formula for the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian. Dihuang nourishes Yin and generates Water, and Water can control Fire; Baimi is sweet, cool, and moistening, and its moistening nature removes Dryness; Metal is the mother of Water, Earth is the mother of Metal, therefore Ginseng and Poria are used to tonify Earth to generate Metal. Essentially, Renshen benefits Lung Qi and drains Fire, while Fuling clears Lung Heat and generates body fluids (Fuling is white and enters the Lung, capable of leaching out damp-heat...)
