Treats nasal polyps, where breath and qi are obstructed, resulting in the inability to smell odors or distinguish scents. (The nose is the orifice of the Lung; when qi is clear, the nasal passages are patent; when qi is hot, nasal congestion occurs. When damp-heat is extremely abundant, it steams upward.)
Xinyi (Magnolia Flower), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Ben (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), in equal parts. Grind into powder. Take three qian per dose, mixed with tea juice. (Externally: calcined Mingfan [Alumen] ground into powder, with a small amount of Bingshan (Borneolum Syntheticum) added, blown into the nose, can dissolve the polyps.)
These are herbs for regulating the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. The Classics state: "Heavenly Qi connects with the Lungs." If the intestines and stomach have no accumulation of phlegm-fire or heat, then what rises normally is all clear qi; due to dry-fire burning internally and wind-cold binding externally, blood and qi become stagnant, thus causing nasal polyps and obstruction of the orifices. Xinyi, Shengma, and Baizhi are acrid, warm, and light/floating, ascending to the head and face, breaking up accumulations; Mutong unblocks the middle jiao, while tea is cold and bitter, descending to drain fire; Gancao harmonizes the middle jiao, thereby moderating the acrid-dispersing nature of the other herbs. (Li Shizhen said: The Lung opens into the nose, the Foot-Yangming Stomach... The nine orifices...)

Treats Bi Yuan (Nasal Sinusitis). (Continuous flow of turbid nasal discharge is called Bi Yuan, caused by wind-heat scorching the brain, causing fluids to seep downward. The Classics state: "Brain fluid leaks as nasal discharge." It also states: "When Gallbladder heat transfers to the brain, there is nasal pungency and Bi Yuan." 'Nasal pungency' refers to the Shan Gen area; 'pungent' indicates soreness and pain. *Yuan Bing Shi* states: Like metal scorched by fire, extreme heat transforms into water; excessive Liver heat causes tears, excessive Heart heat causes sweat, excessive Spleen heat causes saliva, excessive Lung heat causes nasal discharge, excessive Kidney heat causes spit; all are manifestations of extreme heat-fire abundance.)
Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (1 liang), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Xinyi (Magnolia Flower) (5 qian), Cang'erzi (Xanthii Fructus) (stir-fried, 2.5 qian). Grind into powder. Before meals, take two qian mixed with green onion white and tea broth.
These are herbs for regulating the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. All diseases of the head and face are caused by the failure of clear Yang to ascend and the counterflow of turbid Yin. Baizhi governs the Hand and Foot Yangming meridians... ascending... dispersing wind... causing clear Yang to ascend...
The sources of Phlegm vary: some arise from Heat, some from Phlegm generating Heat, some from Qi stagnation, some from Wind, some from Cold...
...established the name "Five Drinks," among which Tan Yin (Phlegm-Retention) is one. Pang Anchang said: Those skilled at treating Phlegm do not treat Phlegm directly but treat Qi; when Qi flows smoothly, the body's fluids also follow Qi smoothly. *Zhun Sheng* states: Phlegm arises because Spleen Qi is insufficient to transport essence to the Lungs, leading to stagnation and formation; treating Phlegm should first tonify the Spleen; once the Spleen restores its normal transformative function, Phlegm will resolve naturally. Kidney deficiency fails to control Water, causing Water to overflow as Phlegm; this is Phlegm without Fire, characterized by clear and thin sputum. Yin deficiency with Fire stirring...
