Treats lung with stagnant heat, cough, hematemesis (vomiting blood), epistaxis (nosebleed), lower gastrointestinal bleeding, painful urinary dysfunction due to heat, wasting-thirst syndrome, foul breath, bitter taste in the mouth. Clears the heart and brightens the eyes. (Stagnant heat in the lungs causes cough; when severe, it forces blood upward causing hematemesis and epistaxis; lung heat transferring to the large intestine causes lower GI bleeding; lung heat cuts off the source of transformation for the bladder, causing dysuria; lung heat causes thirst.)
Jisuye (Leaves of Mentha haplocalyx, also known as Longnao Bohe) (1 liang 6 qian), Sheng Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) (6 qian), Maidong (Rhizoma Ophiopogonis) (4 qian), Puhuang (Pollen Typhae, stir-fried), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, stir-fried).
Soak for two days, decoct to extract juice.
If Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) is present, add it.
This formula acts on the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian and Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder meridian. The lung naturally possesses clear and descending qi; if invaded by pathogenic flames from the Heart or overacting Wood from the Liver, various symptoms manifest. Treats cough with blood-streaked sputum. (Cough refers to sound without matter; Su refers to matter without sound; Kaesu refers to both sound and matter. The lung is the canopy, a highly pure organ; fire causes cough, phlegm causes Su. The lung governs Qi, rebellion of Qi causes cough; the Kidney governs Water, flooding of Water creates phlegm; the Kidney meridian ascends into the lung, follows the throat, its branch from... like red mixed with... Stomach meridian... meridian; Heart, anger...)
Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, processed by water levigation), Gualouren (Semen Trichosanthis, oil removed), Haishi (Lapis Aragonitum, sand removed), Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae, stir-fried until black), Hezi Rou (Endocarpus Chebulae). Equal parts, grind into powder, form pills with honey.
This formula acts on the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian. The Liver is the general officer; rebellious Liver Fire can scorch the Heart and Lungs, thus causing cough with blood-streaked sputum. Qingdai drains Liver Fire and regulates Blood, dispersing stagnant fire in the five Zang organs; Zhizi cools the Heart and clears Lung heat, directing pathogenic heat downward; these two treat Fire. Gualou (moistens dryness and lubricates phlegm) is an essential herb for treating cough (clears upper Jiao phlegm-fire, sweeps away stagnant heat and turbidity); Haishi softens hardness and stops cough, clearing the upper source of Water (softens hard phlegm; when phlegm is eliminated, cough stops. The lung is the upper source of Water); these two descend fire and move phlegm. Hezi is added because it astringes Lung Qi and stabilizes wheezing caused by phlegm. No specific hemostatic herbs are used because once the fire recedes, the bleeding stops spontaneously.
