Treats chronic cough for many years, lung atrophy (pulmonary fibrosis or tissue wasting), and hemoptysis of bright red sputum.
Baiji (Bletilla striata Rhizoma). Grind into powder. Take two qian each time. Swallow with glutinous rice soup before going to bed.
This is a medicine acting on the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Among the five zang organs of the human body, only the lungs have the capacity to regenerate after tissue necrosis. Baiji has bitter and acrid flavors with astringent properties, complying with the descending command of Autumn Metal Qi. It can tonify Lung Qi and stop bleeding, thus treating lung damage with bloody sputum; it can also escharotic necrotic ulcers and dead muscle, serving as a supreme remedy for removing decay and generating new tissue (A jailer in Taizhou pitied a heavy prisoner, who gratefully told him: "I committed capital offenses seven times and suffered torture, damaging my lungs. I obtained a prescription: take Baiji powder daily with rice water, and the effect was miraculous. Later, when the prisoner was sentenced to lingchi [death by a thousand cuts], upon dissection...")
Treats fire above the diaphragm, morning hemoptysis, persistent redness of the cheeks, and throat discomfort (The Lung belongs to Metal, an organ of regulation; when Wood and Fire burn and scorch, Metal Lung suffers punishment, hence hemoptysis; during the Yin and Mao hours of the morning when Wood Qi is prosperous and generates Fire, the cheeks are the regions of the Lung and Liver; among the twelve meridians, only the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian remains superficial and does not traverse the diaphragm and throat...).
Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) (10 liang), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Shishuang (Diospyros Fructus Frost), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (2 liang), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (3 liang). Form into honey pills.
This is a medicine acting on the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Bohe is acrid, aromatic, ascending and floating, dispelling wind and clearing heat (dispelling wind thus soothes the Liver, clearing heat thus purges the Lung, thereby treating blood disorders); Fangfeng is the guiding herb for blood medicines, draining Lung fire and searching out Liver fire (Fangfeng drains Lung fire and disperses Liver fire, serving as the guiding herb for upper-body blood disorders); Chuanxiong is a Qi-moving agent within blood medicines, raising clear Yang and dissipating stasis (when clear Yang rises, turbid Yin descends, serving as an agent to unblock Yin-Yang and Qi-Blood); Shishuang generates fluids and moistens the Lung, Xijiao cools the Heart and purges the Liver, Gancao moderates the upward-flaring fire, and Jiegeng carries the herbs upward...
(Drinking one's own urine is called Lunhui Jiu [Reincarnation Wine])
Treats hemoptysis and hematemesis, postpartum syncope due to blood loss, chronic cough due to Yin deficiency, and steaming heat like burning (Blood is generated by the Heart, controlled by the Spleen, stored in the Liver, and distributed by the Lung; when calm, it returns to the vessels; when hot, it moves recklessly. Fire damages Lung collaterals, and blood follows the cough out, sometimes mixed with phlegm as hemoptysis; large amounts vomited out constitute hematemesis; excessive blood loss after childbirth...).
Tongbian (Child Urine). Select urine from an eleven- or twelve-year-old healthy boy who does not consume meat or pungent/spicy foods, which should be clear as water. Discard the beginning and end portions, and drink while warm. In winter, warm it with hot water before drinking.
Alternatively, mix with Ouzhi (Lotus Root Juice) and Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin). If there is phlegm, add Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice).
This is a medicine acting on the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Tongbian is salty and cold, capable of descending fire, nourishing Yin, moistening the Lung, and dissipating stasis, thus treating blood disorders, fire-induced cough, and blood syncope with miraculous efficacy. Chu Cheng of Northern Qi said: "The throat cannot tolerate foreign objects; even a hair will cause coughing. Once blood leaks, the more it leaks, the more one coughs; the more one coughs, the more it leaks. Drinking urine saves one in a hundred cases, whereas taking cold-cooling medicines kills all..."
