Epistaxis in infants and children is caused by excessive heat in the Lung and Stomach, forcing blood to flow recklessly out of the upper orifices. For epistaxis occurring in spring and winter, it is appropriate to use juice of Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) with a small amount of powder of Sheng Puhuang (Typhonii Rhizomatis Pollen), taken after soaking rock sugar in well water. For autumn and summer, it is appropriate to take a handful of Cheqian Cao (Plantaginis Herba), wash it clean, grind it together with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) to extract the juice, and add one spoonful of Baimi (Honey). First, pack the nostrils with the mixed powder to stop bleeding, then drink a mixture of fresh drawn water, honey, and juices of Cheqian Cao and Shengjiang. Alternatively, crush fresh Luobo (Raphani Fructus) to extract juice, have the child tilt their head back, and drip the juice into the nasal cavity to stop bleeding immediately. Subsequently, drink a mixture of fresh drawn water, honey, and Luobo juice. It is also appropriate to administer Jiaohuang San.
Failure to speak when age-appropriate is termed "Yu Chi" (Delayed Speech). This results from the mother experiencing fright and terror, which internally disturbs the fetus's Zang organs, allowing pathogenic factors to invade the Heart. The tongue is the sprout of the Heart; when Heart Qi is disharmonious, the tongue becomes flaccid and weak. (It is appropriate to administer Changpu Wan, or moxa-convulse the Xinshu (BL15) acupoint three times.)
Chao Yuanfang stated: The ancients referred to a bird in the sky named Wugu (Innocent Bird), which hides during the day and roams at night. If infants' clothing and bedding are left exposed overnight without being collected, and this bird flies overhead, the infant's body may become contaminated by its toxic vapors. This leads to yellowish complexion, erect hair, high fever, ability to eat but failure to gain flesh, eventually resulting in death after months. Hence it is called Wugu disease. Mr. Wang from Handong refuted this, saying: This is caused by invasion of the Eight Evils. What are the Eight Evils? They are hunger, overeating, fatigue, labor, wind, fright, summerheat, and accumulation. If so, all these conditions arise from specific causes and cannot be called "innocent." Pan Ji argues: Night dew is yin and dark, causing various evils to emerge. There are foxes, owls, and other creatures everywhere. Clothing contaminated by their aura will cause illness in infants with deficient Qi and thin constitutions. Because this condition falls outside the scope of the Eight Evils and is contracted innocently, it is named Wugu disease, not merely because of the bird's name. (It is appropriate to administer Fei'er Wan, Budai Wan, and similar formulas.)
Infants with insufficient congenital endowment lack blood and Qi nourishment, leading to emaciated muscles and protruding joints, resembling the knee joint of a crane. This is due to Kidney deficiency failing to generate marrow. (It is appropriate to administer Qian Shi Dihuang Wan.)
Improper breastfeeding that is neither regulated nor digested leads to Spleen and Stomach weakness. Weakness further impairs digestion, causing emaciated muscles and skeletal prominence like firewood, accompanied by rapid breathing and bitter heat sensation. Since this arises from improper nursing, it is termed "Bu Lu" (Feeding Dew/Exposure). (It is appropriate to administer Da Qi Pi Wan, Fei'er Wan.)
