The meridians of the six yang channels of the hand and foot all ascend to the head, and the face is the gathering point of all yang meridians. The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian originates near the side of the nose (at Yingxiang), so the face alone can endure cold. If one feels aversion to cold and the face feels cold, it indicates Stomach Cold. If one feels aversion to heat and the face feels hot, it indicates Stomach Heat. When the face is cold, the complexion tends to be bluish-white. When the face is hot, the complexion tends to be red. A yellow and mottled complexion indicates accumulation of intestinal parasites in the Stomach. A yellow complexion with a sensation of hunger even after eating indicates Stomach Jaundice. Facial edema indicates Wind affecting the Stomach. Facial sores indicate Stomach Fire. Due to the accumulation of heat from rich and greasy foods, and because the Stomach Meridian originates on the face, facial diseases mostly belong to the Stomach. However, there are also cases where facial sores belong to Wind-Heat of the Spleen and Lung, facial dustiness belongs to Dryness-Heat of the Liver and Gallbladder, and certain facial lesions belong to Wind-Dampness and Phlegm-Fluids; these do not solely relate to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. One should select appropriate formulas from the following prescriptions to treat according to the syndrome.
Shengma Weifeng Tang (Cimicifuga Decoction for Stomach Wind): Treats facial edema caused by Wind affecting the Stomach, or numbness, trismus (lockjaw), and eyes that cannot open fully.
Ingredients: Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 2 qian), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, each 1 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Bencao (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Caodoukou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus, each 3 fen), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, unrooted, 5 fen), Manjingzi (Vittagiae Fructus, 2 fen).
Preparation and Administration: Add one slice of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and one Jujube (Zizyphi Fructus), decoct with two cups of water until reduced to seven-tenths. Take after meals.
Shengma Shunqi Tang (Cimicifuga Decoction for Regulating Qi): Treats darkened complexion due to excessive worry, thinking, and irregular diet, accompanied by a sensation of emptiness in the heart and shortness of breath.
Ingredients: Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 1.5 qian), Gange (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, each 1 qian), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 6 fen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, each 5 fen).
Preparation and Administration: Decoct with two cups of water, one slice of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and one large Jujube (Zizyphi Fructus Major) until reduced to seven-tenths. Take warm long after meals.
Xijiao Shengma Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Cimicifuga Decoction): Treats Wind-Heat invading the Yangming meridians, causing swelling and pain of the lips, Jiache region (angle of jaw), and temples, as well as pain connecting the nose, forehead, head, and face. Inability to open the mouth, though speech is possible, interferes with eating. Also treats facial heat.
Ingredients: Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Chuan Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, half liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, each 3.5 qian), Xiang Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Baifuzi (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, each 2.5 qian), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 3 qian 1.5 fen), Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1.5 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Crush the herbs into coarse pieces. Combine as one dose. Decoct with five cups of water until reduced to three and a half cups. Strain and divide into three doses. Finish one day's treatment at once; symptoms will surely subside. Mild loose stools from the viscera are not a contraindication. The Foot-Yangming is the Stomach Meridian. The classics state: "The intestines and stomach are like a market." And again: "Yangming has abundant blood and qi." The Stomach accepts all flavors—pungent, sweet, sour, bitter, salty—just as a market contains everything. Among the Six Channels, Yangming has abundant blood and qi. Toxins generated from rotting and ripening food accumulate in the Stomach. Therefore, this formula uses Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) as the chief herb and Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) as an assistant to enter the Stomach Meridian. The remaining herbs clear Wind-Heat and are effective when used.
Bugwei Tang (Stomach-Nourishing Decoction): Treats cold shanks due to Stomach Deficiency, facial and ocular edema. Also treats facial coldness.
Ingredients: Baiziren (Biota Semen), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, each 1 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, each 1.5 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 5 fen).
Preparation and Administration: Decoct with two bells of water until reduced to seven-tenths. Take warm long after meals.
Fuling Guizhi Wuweizi Gancao Tang plus Dahuang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Schisandra, Licorice Decoction plus Rheum): Treats cough with inverted qi, inability to lie flat, and facial heat resembling drunkenness. This is due to Stomach Heat rushing upward and steaming the face.
Qibai San (Seven Whites Powder): Treats facial macules and facial dirtiness.
Ingredients: Bailian (Tinosporae Caulis), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Bai Qianniu (Ipomoeae Semen), Baifuzi (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, equal parts).
