In the autumn of the fifth year of Shaoxi (1194 AD), Lin Si, a resident of Hukou, fell from his horse while riding at dusk, resulting in a fractured bone in one foot. He hired external physicians, but none were willing to treat him. After ten days, the pain became severe. A Daoist priest happened to pass by the door, heard his groaning, asked for the cause, and upon examination, said, "To reconnect tendons and set bones, turtle shell is indispensable." However, this is difficult to obtain. The Daoist added, "Merely obtaining the shell is sufficient; it makes no difference whether the turtle was alive or dead." Having spoken, he withdrew. Lin Si gathered several physicians to discuss the matter. All agreed that the amount of turtle shell ash required for one foot could be procured. Approximately five li away, on the riverbank, there was a large turtle with a body width of two chi, often lying hidden in the mud. Catching it, removing its shell, burning it into ash, and applying it to the injury would yield results far superior to those of smaller turtles—perhaps a hundred times better. It was already dusk, so there was no time to send servants. After midnight, Old Man Zhang, a neighbor, dreamed of a visitor dressed in black who introduced himself as the old turtle from the riverbank. He pleaded earnestly: "Lin Si has a broken leg, and the doctors intend to kill me to take my shell to heal his injury. I beg you to say a word to save me." Old Man Zhang thanked him and said, "I am foolish and dull; how can I exert any influence?" The man in black replied, "I only trouble you to go to the Lin residence and inform the physicians: 'Previously, a turtle transmitted a prescription to a person to redeem their life. Use fermented melon residue to compress the fracture site, then fix it with a cedar board. This method is also recorded in medical texts. If you add one ingredient, Adzuki Bean (Vigna angularis), mix it into the residue, and apply the board fixation, complete recovery will occur within three days.' Please convey this message immediately; I shall seek to repay you in the future." Then he departed. At dawn, Old Man Zhang acted as instructed. Lin Si and the physicians were delighted and followed his advice. As expected, the treatment proved effective (from *Leibian*).
Cui Jishi (Official Cui) previously served in Zelu alongside Li Baozhen as a Pan Guan (Assistant Administrator). Li Xiang (Minister Li) was playing polo, striking the ball with a mallet. His military general blocked the strike with his own mallet. Following the momentum, the blow could not be stopped, injuring Minister Li's thumb nail and causing it to split open. They hastily applied wound medicine and bandaged it. He sat up reluctantly, frequently requesting wine, drinking several cups until he had consumed an excessive amount, yet his complexion turned increasingly cyanotic, and he endured unceasing pain. A military clerk suggested taking freshly broken green onions (Allium fistulosum), placing them directly into hot ashes to roast until cooked, peeling them, splitting them open, and extracting the juice (exudate) to apply to the injured area. More roasted onions should be prepared to continuously replace the warm compresses. After changing the application three times, his complexion returned to ruddy, and shortly thereafter, he reported that the pain had ceased. Using warm green onion juice wraps more than ten times, the treatment concluded, allowing him to converse and laugh throughout the banquet (from *Benshi Fang*).
Ziran Tong (Natural Copper): There is a record of someone raising an eagle with a broken wing, which later flew away. Currently, for treating contusions and fractures, Natural Copper is ground into an extremely fine powder, processed by water levigation (water flying), mixed equally with Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) and Myrrha (Moyao, 没药) (each half qian), taken once with wine. Simultaneously, massage the painful area by hand (from *Bencao Yan Yi*).
