The Lung is the canopy (protective covering) of the five Zang organs. When Lung Qi is excessive, the pulse becomes large; when the pulse is large, one cannot lie on their back.
A woman suffered from chronic cough due to Lung Heat. Her body felt as if scorched by fire, her muscles wasted away, and she was on the verge of developing Pulmonary Tuberculosis (Fei Lao). Equal parts of Loquat Leaf (Pipapye), Akebia Caulis (Mutong), Winter Flower Bud (Kuandonghua), Aster Root (Ziwan), Apricot Seed (Xingren), and White Mulberry Bark (Sangbaipi) were used, with Rhubarb (Dahuang) halved in quantity. These were processed into powder according to standard methods, formed into pills the size of a cherry using honey. One pill was held in the mouth to dissolve after meals and at night before sleep. The illness was cured before finishing one course of treatment. (Source: *Bencao Yan Yi*)
Patients suffering from asthma or wheezing should not be treated uniformly; Yin and Yang patterns must be differentiated. Onset during the cold winter months indicates a Cold pattern; onset during hot summer months indicates a Heat pattern. For Cold patterns, formulas such as Dou Shuang Wan (Bean Frost Pill), Qing Zhong Tang (Clear the Middle Decoction), or Zhu Fei San (Boil Lung Powder) are administered. For Heat patterns, formulas such as Qing Xing Gejie Wan (Green Apricot Gecko Pill) are used. Additionally, there is a formula called Sun Da Zi Zibo San (Sun's Magnolia and Phellodendron Powder), which can be used regardless of Cold or Heat patterns. (Source: *Yi Yu*)
Some individuals initially experience coughing leading to wheezing, accompanied by stagnation and fullness in the chest and diaphragm, making it difficult to lie down, with Qi rushing upward. It is advisable to promote urination, resolve phlegm, and direct Qi downward early on. If not treated promptly, it will inevitably develop into Water Retention disorders (Shui Qi). The patient should take Zijin Dan (Purple Gold Pill). If Water Retention has already formed and the fluid accumulates outside the membranes, acupuncture must strictly be avoided; piercing through the membrane can lead to severe consequences. If symptoms improve slightly at first but recur, the condition becomes incurable. (Same source)
In the winter of the first year of Chunxi (1174 AD), my nephew traveled from Poyang to Siming, passing through Yiwu, Wuzhou. He lodged at an inn for the night. Suddenly, a man dressed in commoner's clothes sat beside me. I asked who he was, and he replied, "I am Doctor Sun from this county, specializing in eye diseases." After conversing with him, Dr. Sun said, "You are a young master from a noble family; you must possess good medical prescriptions. Give me one or two, and they might help cure others' illnesses." I orally dictated to him a secret prescription for Fanwei (Reflux/Vomiting) that I usually kept confidential. The method is as follows: Take a large Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root), remove its cap, hollow out the center to make it clean, insert 49 grains of Dingxiang (Clove), replace the cap, and tie it securely with thread. Place it in a silver or ceramic vessel, pour fresh Ginger Juice (Shengjiang Ziran Zhi) over it, cover it, and simmer slowly until the liquid evaporates completely. Grind into fine powder. Administer one Qianbi (approx. 3-5 grams) sprinkled on the tongue, rinse with saliva, and swallow. If thirst occurs, consume congee slowly. Avoid greasy and raw/cold foods. Dr. Sun happily recorded this prescription in his book. Shortly thereafter, the Military Inspector (Zhaoqianxia) of the prefecture suffered severely from this disease, in critical condition. Dr. Sun treated him using exactly this prescription, and he recovered after several doses. (Source: *Lei Bian*)
Donkey Urine for Treating Fanwei. *Waitai Miyao* records that someone suffered from this disease in his youth. Whenever he ate cakes, soups, or congee, he would vomit shortly after. During the Zhenguan era of Emperor Taizong, Xu Fengyu and his brothers, along with Chai Jiang and others, were renowned physicians. They were ordered by the Emperor to treat the patient but exhausted their skills without success. The patient became emaciated and weak, facing imminent death. Suddenly, a guard claimed that drinking donkey urine was highly effective. Taking two He (approx. 40 ml) daily, subsequent vomiting reduced to half the volume. Another two He were taken at dusk; after eating congee at nightfall, vomiting ceased immediately. By noon the next day, this was reported to the imperial court. Five or six officials suffering from Fanwei took the same medicine simultaneously and all recovered. This medicine has slight toxicity; dosage should not be excessive. It is best to administer warm donkey urine, two He per dose. For deep-seated diseases, administering it for seven consecutive days yields excellent results. (Source: *Benshi Fang*)
