[Eleven Laws]
In treating spasm disease (Jingbing), failing to investigate the cause of illness and rashly administering treatment is the doctor's fault. Causes include: exogenous six excesses (Liuyin), excessive sweating, erroneous sweating in patients with sores, erroneous purging in wind diseases, fire blazing after moxibustion, inherent deficiency of Yin-blood, or inherent weakness of Yang-Qi. These are all different. Without distinguishing the cause, how can medication be chosen for rescue?
In treating spasm disease, failing to deeply understand Cold Damage meridians and pulse patterns, yet presumptuously taking responsibility, is the doctor's fault. Not knowing which meridian the pathogen resides in means the medicine does not match the disease. Not knowing the pulse evidence means the medicine is used in vain. Thus, the deterioration of spasm disease falls into two categories: collapse of Yin or collapse of Yang. Collapse of Yin refers to inherent deficiency of essence, blood, and body fluids, unable to nourish sinews and vessels; this requires urgent rescue of Yin. Collapse of Yang refers to inherent thinness of Yang-Qi, unable to fill and soften sinews and vessels; this requires urgent rescue of Yang. If Yin is already deficient but Yang is supplemented, Yin will be exhausted instantly. If Yang is already thin but Yin is supplemented, Yang will be exhausted instantly. Failing to understand Cold Damage meridians and pulse theory leads to errors in every action, bringing about karmic retribution.
In treating pediatric spasm disease, falsely calling it "Wind-Fright" (Jingfeng) and using sedative drugs for mild conditions will kill the infant instantly. This must be banned nationwide. Infants cannot tolerate high fever from Cold Damage and easily become comatose. Making loud noises or firing cannons nearby confuses them. Falsely diagnosing Wind-Fright and lightly applying sedatives draws external pathogens deep into internal organs, resulting in death in every case, with never a single survivor. If not banned nationwide, when will it end?
In treating postpartum spasm disease, falsely calling it "Postpartum Wind-Fright" and lightly using sedative drugs will kill the woman instantly. This is what quacks should beware of. Postpartum, the Blood residence is empty, making external wind easy to enter. Zhang Zhongjing stated that new postpartum involves blood loss, emptiness, sweating, and susceptibility to wind, causing spasm. Later sages drove wind from the Blood residence, following established methods. Only extremely incompetent doctors would erroneously use sedative drugs, unlike the term "Pediatric Wind-Fright" which has harmed generations. Even wise men are not exempt. Now, let us agree to ban the term "Wind-Fright" nationwide, preventing it from entering homes. For infants with fever and coma, always choose Cold Damage experts to treat according to meridians, ensuring near-perfect success. This breaks the barrier between life and death for infants, bringing joy to heaven and earth.
In treating dampness diseases, forbidding sweating is correct, but for those with constrained Yang, failing to induce slight sweating harms the patient; this is the doctor's error. Patients with dampness should not sweat because they naturally sweat much, risking Yang collapse. Thus, misusing sweating for damp-warmth is called "heavy smiting," leading to death. Ancient laws warn deeply against this. However, for those exposed to wind-cold long-term, consuming raw/cold foods excessively, or washing off sweat with water, constraining Yang, slight sweating is necessary to resolve the disease. The Neijing states that those who do not sweat in summer may develop wind-malaria in autumn. Forcing sweat when inappropriate, or withholding slight sweat when needed, is like giving up eating due to choking.
In treating dampness diseases, promoting urination is indicated. However, indiscriminately promoting urination in Yang-deficient patients kills them; this is the doctor's fault. Promoting urination is the general rule for dampness. But for those with inherent True Yang deficiency, sweating with scanty urination indicates exhaustion of the "Spring of Life" and impending Yang collapse. Mistaking this for damp-heat and boldly promoting urination causes True Yang to detach without fluid support, leading to instant death. This is a major prohibition within permitted methods.
In critical cases of dampness, protecting Yang is essential. Using wind-dispelling herbs to overcome dampness is like wielding a blade; using warming herbs to regulate Spleen alone is waiting for death; this is the doctor's fault. Strong Yang brings agility; heavy dampness brings heaviness. When the body is as heavy as a mountain, painful in all meridians, unable to turn, Aconite Root (Fuzi) must be used to restore Yang and overcome dampness. For exterior dampness allowing sweating, combine Aconite with Guizhi Tang to expel outward. For interior dampness allowing purging, combine Aconite with Xixin and Dahuang to expel downward. For middle dampness, combine Aconite with Baizhu to warm the center and dry Spleen dampness. Using Baizhu mixed with Qianghuo, Fangfeng, Zhishi, Houpo, Zhizi, Chenpi is ineffective. Using Binglang, Huashi, or methods like Zhouche Dao Shui are even worse.
In treating summerheat disease, failing to distinguish exogenous vs. endogenous injury, activity vs. rest, and blindly using established formulas is the doctor's fault. Cold damage with Yin involvement misusing Yangdan Tang causes immediate cold limbs. Summerheat with Yin involvement misusing Xiangru Yin causes immediate aphonia. Later sages added Renshen, Huangqi, Baizhu, Chenpi, and Mu Gua to Xiangru Yin to treat endogenous injury simultaneously, showing insight. But failure to differentiate syndromes causes errors beyond this.
In treating summerheat disease, failing to address dampness is the doctor's error. Heat steaming dampness constitutes summerheat; without dampness, it is merely dry heat, not summerheat. Thus, obese people have more dampness and more summerheat diseases. Thin people have more fire and more heat diseases.
In treating summerheat disease, for those without sweat, obtaining sweat is the correct approach. Clearing internal heat without resolving the exterior is the doctor's fault. Summerheat usually causes profuse sweating; absence of sweat implies retention by water-dampness or closure by wind-cold. External pathogens must be dispersed first to obtain sweat, then internal heat cleared. If not resolved externally first, clearing internally fails, eventually leading to malaria or dysentery, causing endless suffering.
In treating summerheat disease, unwarrantedly using warming tonics allows summerheat pathogens to penetrate deeply, forcing blood to move recklessly; this is the doctor's fault. Summerheat damages Qi, causing rapid breathing and apparent deficiency. Thus, clearing summerheat and benefiting Qi should be done together. Ignorant practitioners use warming tonics, driving summerheat into the Blood level, causing epistaxis or bloody dysentery. Even in deep winter cold, if heat pathogens are treated with warming methods, the harm is infinite.
