Xiaodu Xijiao Yin (Disinfecting Rhinoceros Horn Decoction): Treats adults and children with internal accumulation of pathogenic heat, excessive phlegm-saliva, tubercles in the cheeks and neck, and sores on the mouth and tongue. It is also suitable for general eruption of sores and boils, whether ulcerated or not.
Rhinoceros Horn (ground into juice) 1 qian, Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 1 qian, Shi Niu Zi (Arctii Fructus, stir-fried) 2 qian, Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica) 1 qian, Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) 1.5 qian. Add two cups of water, decoct to one cup, take warm after meals.
Note: This formula specifically clears heat accumulated in the Upper Jiao, similar to Lige San. Lige San can be taken frequently, whereas this formula should only be taken temporarily.
Siwu Erlian Tang (Four Substances and Two Gentianas Decoction): Treats fever due to blood deficiency and consumptive disease, five-palm heat (heat sensation in palms, soles, and chest), clear consciousness during the day, and fever at night.
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) each 1 qian; Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Hu Huanglian (Picrorhizae Rhizoma) each 8 fen. Add one and a half cups of water, decoct with ginger.
Sishun Qingliang Yinzi (Four-Obedient Cooling Decoction): Treats blood-heat obstruction, red face, and stifling oppression with irritability.
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) each 1 qian. Add one and a half cups of water, decoct to eight parts, take orally when far from meals.
Note: These two formulas clear heat in the blood level, but are only applicable to excess heat patterns, not deficient heat, as they may damage stomach qi.
Niuhuang Gao (Calculus Bovis Paste): Treats heat entering the Blood Chamber, causing mania, heart heat, and inability to recognize people.
Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang) 1 qian, Cinnabar (Zhusha), Curcuma Aromatica Rhizome (Yujin) each 2 qian, Borneol (Naozi) 5 fen, Licorice Root (Gancao), Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi) each 2 qian. Grind all into powder, make pills with refined honey the size of soap beans. Dissolve in fresh cold water and take.
Note: This is a formula for clearing heat, calming fright, and tranquilizing the mind. Heat invading the Pericardium and disturbing the Spirit necessitates its use.
Yangshi Qinjiao Fulie Tang (Yang’s Qinjiao Support-the-Thinness Decoction): Treats Lung萎 (Lung flaccidity), bone-steaming fever progressing to consumptive disease, cough, chills or fever, hoarseness or aphonia, weakness with spontaneous sweating, and limb fatigue.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) 2 qian, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Turtle Carapace and Plastron (Biejia, honey-fried), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Digupi (Lycii Cortex) each 1.5 qian; Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber), Ziwan (Asternatis Herba), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) 1 qian. Cut into pieces, decoct in water and take.
Note: This treats consumptive disease caused by prolonged heat in the Shaoyang channel, employing a method to treat both Qi and Blood.
Ju Fang Danggui Buxue Tang (Prescribed Bureau’s Danggui Tonify-Blood Decoction): Treats muscle heat, restlessness, red eyes and face, irritability and thirst with desire to drink, continuous day and night, with a pulse that is large and forceful but empty upon heavy pressure, indicating pulse deficiency and blood deficiency. Misapplication of Baihu Tang would be fatal; this formula is indicated.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix). Cut into pieces, decoct in water and take.
Note: This addresses pathology in the Blood level of the Three Yin channels of the Foot. If treated as Lung Qi deficiency heat using Baihu Tang methods, Spleen Qi will sink, accelerating the loss of Yin. In deep-seated diseases, medication hitting the correct point does not guarantee efficacy. One mistake cannot be undone; discernment is crucial. Furthermore, most febrile diseases arise from latent heat combined with seasonal heat. A person with harmonious Stomach Qi feels no heat in warm weather; such a person is healthy. Treating accumulated heat only after it has persisted is already a miscalculation, let alone mismatched medication. Fat individuals’ diseases often stem from excessive flesh and blood plus dietary heat; thin individuals’ diseases stem from inherent fluid deficiency generating fire-heat. Treating heat in fat individuals requires caution against damaging Yang; treating heat in thin individuals requires caution against damaging Yin. Do not rigidly apply formulas. The recorded formulas here should be adapted individually. Methods for exterior-interior heat, raising Yang, and nourishing Yin have specific formulas not covered here. Additionally, for Six Fu organs’ excess heat with abdominal distension and constipation, and mouth/tongue sores, there is a method using Shengjiang Xiexin Tang. An unusual prescription uses Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) each 3 liang, Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 1 liang, Fuling (Poria), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) each 2 liang, Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) 10 liang, cut and decoct with Dazao (Jujubae Fructus), take 1 liang per dose. This is likely for Yin deficiency with dry blood where fire-heat is hard to subdue, employing contrary treatment. Extending this, the reason Tongzi (boys) can take Shenqi Wan containing Fuzi and Rougui is also contrary treatment. Once deficient heat is removed, it can be taken more. These treat spasmatic heat.
Jin Gui Mahuang Baizhu Tang (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet’s Mahuang and Atractylodes Decoction) (Discussion see "Fifteen Formulas for Treating Dampness" earlier):
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 3 liang, remove nodes), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 2 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 1 liang), Xingren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen, 70 seeds, remove skin and tip), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 4 liang). Five ingredients. Add nine sheng of water, first boil Mahuang reducing by two sheng, remove foam, add other herbs, boil to obtain two and a half sheng. Remove dregs, take 8 ge warm, cover to induce slight sweating.
Guizhi Fuzi Tang Formula (Discussion see earlier):
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 4 liang), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 liang), Fuzii Preparata (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix, 3 pieces, processed, peeled, cut into 8 slices), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 2 liang), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 12 pieces). Five ingredients. Add six sheng of water, boil to obtain two sheng. Remove dregs, divide into three warm doses.
Baizhu Fuzi Tang Formula:
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 liang), Fuzii Preparata (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix, 1.5 pieces), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 1 liang), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 1.5 liang), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 6 pieces). Five ingredients. Add three sheng of water, boil to obtain one sheng. Remove dregs, divide into three warm doses. After the first dose, if itching occurs, take again after half a day. Finish all three doses. If the patient feels like insects crawling on the skin, do not be surprised; this is Baizhu and Fuzi acting together in the skin to expel water qi.
Jin Gui Gancao Fuzi Tang Formula (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet’s Licorice and Aconite Decoction):
Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 2 liang), Fuzii Preparata (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix, 2 pieces), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 liang), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 4 liang). Four ingredients. Add six sheng of water, boil to obtain three sheng. Remove dregs, take 1 sheng warm, three times daily. Initial dose inducing slight sweat resolves the condition; appetite returns. If sweating causes irritability, take 5 he. If 1 sheng is too much, 6-7 he is optimal.
Jin Gui Mahuang Xingzi Yiyi Gancao Tang Formula (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet’s Mahuang, Apricot Kernel, Coix Seed, and Licorice Decoction):
Patient suffers from whole-body pain, fever, worsening in the afternoon, named Wind-Damp. Caused by sweating exposed to wind or long-term exposure to cold. Give Mahuang Xingzi Yiyi Gancao Tang.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 4 liang, remove nodes, soak), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 1 liang), Yiyiren (Coicis Semen, 0.5 jin), Xingren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen, 70 seeds, remove skin and tip, stir-fry). Cut like hemp seeds. Take 4 qian bi per dose, add 1.5 cups water, boil to 8 parts, remove dregs, take warm, induce slight sweat and avoid wind.
Jin Gui Fangji Huangqi Tang Formula (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet’s Stephania and Astragalus Decoction):
Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 1 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, stir-fried, 0.5 liang), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 7.5 qian), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, 1.2 liang). Cut like hemp seeds. Take 5 qian bi per dose, add 4 slices ginger, 1 jujube, 1.5 cups water, boil to 8 parts. Remove dregs, take warm, repeat later. For asthma, add Mahuang 0.5 liang. For stomach disharmony, add Baishao 3 fen. For rising Qi, add Guizhi 3 fen. For deep cold below, add Xixin 3 fen. After taking, feel like insects crawling on skin, warmth flowing from waist down. Sit on quilt, wrap another around waist/lower body, keep warm until slight sweat cures.
He Ji Ju Fang Wuji San (Prescribed Bureau’s Five Accumulations Powder):
Treats cold pathogen invasion, headache, body pain, neck/back stiffness, aversion to cold, vomiting, abdominal pain. Also treats Shanghan fever, headache, aversion to wind, regardless of internal injury from cold/raw food or external invasion of wind-cold. Also treats cold-damp in meridians causing lower back/leg soreness. Also treats irregular menstruation or difficult labor in women.
Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Fuling (Poria), Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber, washed seven times in boiling water), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Gancao (Licorice Root, stir-fried), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) each 3 liang; Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus, bran-fried), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, remove nodes), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, remove white pith) each 6 liang; Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) 12 liang; Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, ginger-processed), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed) each 4 liang; Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soaked in rice wash water, peeled) 4 liang. Cut into pieces. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1 cup water, 3 slices ginger, 3 scallion whites, boil to 7 parts, take hot. For stomach cold, use roasted ginger. For Qi stagnation, add Wuzhuyu. For women regulating menstruation/promoting labor, add Aiye vinegar.
Note: This single formula treats many diseases, favored by mediocre physicians. Haizang said: Mahuang, Guizhi, Baishao, Gancao constitute Guizhi Mahuang Ge Ban Tang; Cangzhu, Gancao, Chenpi, Houpo constitute Pingwei San; Zhiqiao, Jiegeng, Chenpi, Fuling, Banxia constitute Zhiju Erchen Tang. Plus Chuanxiong/Danggui for blood, Ganjiang/Houpo for Qi, these combine to release exterior, warm middle, drain damp, resolve phlegm, dissipate fullness, regulate menstruation. Though designed for interior cold/exterior invasion, it is not Zhang Zhongjing’s precise formula for exterior-interior Mahuang/Guizhi/Jiang/Fuzi cases. For accumulated cold/vomiting/diarrhea/epidemic, add scallion white/Chidou for neck stiffness. Add Wuzhuyu for cold limbs. Add Jujube for alternating chills/fever. Add vinegar for difficult labor. Thus, application varies; only flexible practitioners choose wisely. From Haizang’s view, prioritize interior for interior urgency, exterior for exterior urgency, avoiding confusion.
Huoren Baidu San (Life-Saving Detoxification Powder):
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus), Fuling (Poria), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) each 1 liang; Gancao (Licorice Root) 0.5 liang. Grind to fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add 1 cup water, 3 slices ginger, boil to 7 parts, take warm. Or brew with boiling water. Treats Shanghan, plague, wind-damp, wind-dizziness, spasmodic wind-phlegm, headache, dizziness, limb pain, aversion to cold/high fever, neck stiffness/eye pain. Suitable for elderly and children. Essential in miasma areas, epidemics, high phlegm populations, or low-damp weak-limb regions. Take 2-3 times daily until effective. For irritability/thirst, add Huangqin.
Yu Chang’s humble opinion: Among Sanmen formulas, this is ranked first for its efficacy. Leigong asked Yellow Emperor: "Why is San Yang unassailable?" Emperor replied: "San Yang arriving together is like wind/rain or thunderbolt, hence unassailable." Summer’s three pathogens aggregate; their disease is harder than single pathogens. People infected die, pathogens transmit, multiplying into epidemics. Daily intake of this formula prevents pathogen retention in chest, bringing relief. All herbs are acrid/pneutral; Renshen supports Zheng Qi to expel Xie Qi, saving millions. Why do vulgar doctors omit Renshen? Does it differ from other life-saving formulas?
Qingre Shenshi Tang (Clear-Heat Drain-Damp Decoction):
Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, salt-water fried) 2 qian, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) each 1 qian; Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) each 1.5 qian; Gancao (Licorice Root) 5 fen. Add two zhong water, decoct to 8 parts, take. For pure damp-draining, remove Huanglian/Huangbai, add Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma).
Yu Chang reads this formula, slightly agreeing, as summer damp is damp-heat/summerheat-damp, yet most formulas target cold-damp/wind-damp, which is unsatisfactory. The post-script suggests removing cold/increasing heat, merely copying others.
Ershu Siling Tang (Two Atractylodes and Four Poria Decoction):
Treats various damp-swelling/fullness, whole-body pain, sudden fever/stifling, urinary/fecal difficulty.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen), Gancao (Licorice Root) equal parts. Add two cups water, 3 slices ginger, a pinch Dengxin (Junci Medulla), decoct and take. This formula treats exterior-interior dampness, draining via urine, clearing summerheat-heat. Recommended.
Guiling Ganlu Yin (Cinnamon-Poria Sweet Dew Drink):
Treats severe internal damp-heat, irritability/thirst, diarrhea, scanty urine, urgent stool, cholera/vomiting-diarrhea, headache/dry mouth. (Formula see this section).
Qianghuo Shengshi Tang (Qianghuo Overcoming-Damp Decoction):
Treats spinal pain, neck stiffness, waist feeling like breaking, neck like board, ascending headache. Caused by Taiyang channel Qi blockage.
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) each 1 qian; Gaoben (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) each 1.5 qian; Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) each 4 fen. Add two cups water, decoct to 8 parts, take warm after meals.
Note: When damp-earth is severe with heat, sweating is easier than purging. Change routine method to exterior dispersal; this formula achieves this.
Xuisui Zi Wan (Xuisui Zi Pill):
Treats Lung meridian dampness, generalized edema, chest fullness/discomfort, cough or wheezing.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Han Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Chi Fuling (Poria with Red Wood), Hanshi Mian (Cold Food Dough, wrapped and baked), Binglang (Arecae Semen), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) each 0.5 liang; Tingli (Periplocae Semen, stir-fried) 4 liang; Xuisui Zi (Euphorbiae Lathyridis Semen) 1 liang; Haijinsha (Lygodii Spora) 0.5 liang. Grind to powder, make pills with jujube meat size of wu zi. Take 30 pills per dose with Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex) decoction.
Note: Purging formulas are often too harsh. This treats Lung disease with Renshen as Sovereign; Haijinsha San uses Baizhu as Sovereign. Recovery is possible.
Chushi Tang (Drain-Damp Decoction):
Treats cold-damp injury, heavy body, lower back/leg soreness, loose stool, scanty or free urination.
Banxia Qu (Pinelliae Fermented Tuber, stir-fried), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, ginger-processed), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, rice-wash processed) each 2 qian; Huoxiang Ye (Agastaches Folium), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, remove white pith), Baifuling (Poria) each 1 liang; Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) 7 qian; Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, raw) 1 liang. Cut into pieces. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1 cup water, 7 slices ginger, 1 jujube, boil to 7 parts, take warm before meals.
Note: Spleen dislikes dampness; damp enters from below injuring Spleen, causing heaviness/weak legs, scanty urine, loose stool. Without warming Spleen, damp cannot leave. Add heat-clearing/diuretic herbs to this formula.
Baizhu Jiu (Atractylodes Wine):
Treats dampness-induced joint pain.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 1 liang, wine 3 cups, decoct to 1 cup, take frequently anytime. Substitute water if unable to drink alcohol.
Note: This formula focuses solely on regulating Spleen, not promoting urination. Since Spleen governs transportation, damp leaves via urine naturally. For those with insufficient Stomach fluids who dare not promote urination, this is a holy medicine.
Jin Gui Baihu Jia Renshen Tang (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet’s White Tiger Plus Ginseng Decoction) (See 32 Formulas for Treating Summerheat):
Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) 6 liang, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) 1 jin, Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) 2 liang, Jingmi (Oryza Sativa Germen) 1 he, Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) 3 liang. Five ingredients. Add ten dou water, boil until rice is cooked and soup is ready. Remove dregs, take 1 sheng warm, three times daily.

For headache/fire in eyes, add Huanglian 2-3 fen, Chuanxiong 3 fen. For unclear head/eyes, upper congestion/lower heat, add Manjingzi 3 fen, Gaoben 2 fen, Xixin 1 fen, Chuanxiong 3 fen, Shengdihuang 2 fen. For shortness of breath/low spirit/dream fatigue, add Wuweizi 9 seeds. For constipation every 1-2 days, poor appetite, hidden fire in blood preventing lubrication, add Dangguishen 5 fen, Shengdihuang 5 fen, Taoren 3 seeds (peeled), Maziren 5 fen (paste). If bowel movement resumes, stop added herbs. If still sluggish, do not use other drugs, add small amount of Da Huang 5 fen (roasted). If chronic constipation is not blood stasis but heat generating wind showing wind signs, stop blood-moving herbs, continue Huangqi Renshen Tang. Externally, use Qianghuo 5 qian, Fangfeng 5 qian, four cups water, boil to one cup, remove dregs, take on empty stomach, bowel will move significantly. Stop after one dose. For chest Qi stagnation, double Qingpi, add Chenpi to expel pathogen. This disease stems from Yuan Qi deficiency, tonify Qi, do not purge. For severe Qi stagnation, excessive tonification, or emotional depression, add Muxiang 2-3 fen, Sharen 2-3 fen, Baidoukou 2 fen, decoct with main herbs. For abdominal pain without aversion to cold, add Baishao 5 fen, Huangqin 2 fen, reduce Wuweizi.
