Sixty-nine Methods, One Discussion.
When the Lung is struck by Wind, the patient lies supine with chest fullness and shortness of breath, experiencing dizziness, stuffiness, and sweating; this is a syndrome of Lung Wind. Observing the area from below the eyes to both sides above the nose, descending to the mouth: if the color is white, it is still treatable. Quickly moxa the Feishu (BL13) acupoint for one hundred moxibustion units, but reduce the dosage carefully. If the color is yellow, this indicates that the Lung has been damaged and transformed into blood stasis; it cannot be treated further. The patient will likely speak deliriously, grasp at empty air, or point at the ground, or pick at clothing seams. After several days like this, death ensues. If struck by urgent Wind, confusion and trance set in immediately, accompanied by wild talk, delirium, shortness of breath, or inability to speak. If not treated urgently, death occurs overnight. If detected early, moxa the Feishu (BL13), Geshu (BL17), and Ganshu (BL18) acupoints for dozens of moxibustion units.
When the Liver is struck by Wind, the patient can only squat and cannot lower their head; if there is a slight bluish tint around both eyes and the forehead, this is a syndrome of Liver Wind. If the lips are blue and the face yellow, it is still treatable. Urgently moxa the Ganshu (BL18) acupoint for one hundred moxibustion units and urgently administer Xuming Tang (Cure-all Decoction). If the color is deeply blue-black, this indicates that the Liver has been damaged and cannot be treated further; death occurs in a few days.
When the Heart is struck by Wind, the patient can only lie supine and cannot turn sideways; they experience stuffiness, chaos, fainting, and cold sweat; this is a syndrome of Heart Wind. If the lips are bright red, it is still treatable. Moxa the Xinshu (BL15) acupoint for one hundred moxibustion units and urgently administer Xuming Tang (Cure-all Decoction). If the lips are blue, white, yellow, or black, this indicates that the Heart has deteriorated and transformed into fluid retention; it cannot be treated further. Death occurs in ten days (some say five to six days).
When the Spleen is struck by Wind, the patient can only squat with abdominal fullness. If the whole body is yellow and the patient spits saliva, it is still treatable. Moxa the Pishu (BL20) acupoint for one hundred moxibustion units and urgently administer Xuming Tang (Cure-all Decoction). If the area under the eyes and the hands and feet are blue, it cannot be treated further.
When the Kidney is struck by Wind, the patient squats with lower back pain. If observing the left and right hypochondrium, there is no yellow color like a cake-sized patch, it is still treatable. Moxa the Shenshu (BL23) acupoint for one hundred moxibustion units and urgently administer Xuming Tang (Cure-all Decoction). If the teeth are yellow-red, the sideburns stand straight, and the face has an earthy color, it cannot be treated further.
When the Large Intestine is struck by Wind, bowel sounds continue incessantly while lying down. Moxa the Dachangshu (BL25) acupoint for one hundred moxibustion units and administer Xuming Tang (Cure-all Decoction).
Discussion: Regarding wind diseases, those internal involve the Five Zang Organs, external involve the skin, sinking involves the bone marrow, and floating involves the blood vessels. If located in the interstices (Couli), decoctions can reach them. If in the Five Zang Organs, fermented wines can reach them. If in the blood vessels, acupuncture and moxibustion can hit them. If deep in the bone marrow, Bian Que himself claimed he could do nothing.
Wind Paralysis (Fengfei): Sudden inability to speak, locked jaw, limbs uncoordinated and stiff. Moxibustion method: Measure the distance from the inner crease between the little finger and ring finger to the fingertip of the patient's hand as a standard length. Place this length on the umbilicus, looking straight up to the Danzhu point below the heart, mark the upper end. Make two more such lengths, continuing upwards from the previous mark, aligning the bottom of one with the top opening of the next, taking the original length. Place them horizontally so their openings meet, forming three segments resembling the character "Chuan" (川). For men, measure the right hand; for women, the left hand. To ensure clarity, use cinnabar to mark three points and apply moxibustion, one hundred units each.
Liver Wind prognostication: Inability to speak, moxa Renzhong (GV26), then Dazhui (GV14), then Ganshu (BL18), fifty units each.
Heart Wind: Moxa Xinshu (BL15), fifty units each.
Spleen Wind: Moxa Pishu (BL20), fifty units each.
Spleen Wind prognostication: Voicelessness or hands moving up and down, moxa the tips of all ten fingers, then Renzhong (GV26) and Dazhui (GV14). On the meridians before both ears, one cun above and below the ear gate, then six acupoints above and below the joints of the two big toes, seven units each.
Sudden Wind Stroke with Locked Jaw: Use a reed tube five cun long. Insert one end into the ear canal. Seal the surrounding area tightly with dough to prevent air leakage. Place a soybean and mugwort at the other end and burn until ignited. Apply seven moxibustion units; the condition heals. Treat the right side by moxing the left, and vice versa. This is a secret not passed down from Qianjin. Also moxa the crossing pulse on the hand for three units, left moxing right, right moxing left. The moxa cone should be the size of a mouse dropping, placed horizontally, and burned from both ends.
For sudden Wind Stroke with locked jaw unable to open, moxa Jiache (ST6) acupoints. These are located eight fen below the ear, slightly forward. Moxa five units, and speech returns. Also, moxa according to age units. For facial deviation, moxa both sides.
Method for treating Corpse-like Coma (Shijue):
When the patient appears dead but the pulse beats normally, needle Baihui (GV20) inserting two cun using the tonification method. Moxa and warm compress both hypochondriac regions. Also needle the tip of the middle toe of the foot, cutting off nail width like a leek leaf. Also needle the medial side of the big toenail, three fen from the nail edge.
Moxibustion for Aphasia and Speechlessness:
First moxa Tianchuang (SI16) for fifty units. Extinguish the fire, then move to moxa Baihui (GV20) for fifty units. Return to Tianchuang (SI16) for fifty units. If Baihui is moxa first during initial onset, the wind pathogen cannot vent, attacks the Five Zang Organs internally causing blockage, leading to persistent aphasia. Therefore, moxa Tianchuang first, then Baihui is better. Moxa fifty units per point. Extinguish fire to vent, then resume moxa. Depending on severity: severe cases, three hundred units per site; mild cases, adjust accordingly (one version says moxa Jianjing (GB21) for two hundred units, then Zusanli (ST36) for three units...).
Another Method:
For all wind strokes where medication worsens the condition, moxa any Wind Acupoint for three units; this is divine and effective. To eliminate the root cause, fire and mugwort are essential; relying solely on decoctions will not cure.
Moxibustion for Opisthotonos:
Blue lips, eyes rolled back, opisthotonos. As soon as symptoms begin, moxa Shenting (GV24) for seven units. Located directly above the nose at the hairline.
Next, moxa Qucha (EX-HN4) acupoints, seven units each. Located one and a half cun lateral to Shenting (GV24).
Next, moxa Shangguan (ST7) acupoints, seven units each. Located in the depression above the anterior border of the zygomatic arch near the ear, also known as Keyuren (ST7).
Next, moxa Xiaguan (ST7) acupoints, seven units each. Located in the depression below the temporal artery at the lower border of the zygomatic arch.
Next, moxa Jiache (ST6) acupoints, seven units each. Located in the depression at the angle of the mandible.
Next, moxa Lianquan (CV23) acupoint, seven units. Located behind the hyoid bone, directly below the chin.
Next, moxa Xinhui (GV22) acupoint, seven units. Located one cun above Shenting (GV24).
Next, moxa Baihui (GV20) acupoint, seven units. Located at the apex of the head, in the midline.
Next, moxa Benshen (GB13) acupoints, two units each. Located two fen inside the hairline, directly above the ear.
Next, moxa Tianzhu (BL10) acupoints, seven units each. Located in the depression lateral to the major ligament of the neck, inside the hairline.
Next, moxa Taodao (GV10) acupoint, seven units. Located between the spinous processes of C7 and T1 (below Dazhui GV14).
Next, moxa Fengmen (BL12) acupoints, seven units each. Located one and a half cun lateral to the spinous process of the second thoracic vertebra.
Next, moxa Xinshu (BL15) acupoints, seven units each. Located one and a half cun lateral to the spinous process of the fifth thoracic vertebra.
Next, moxa Ganshu (BL18) acupoints, seven units each. Located one and a half cun lateral to the spinous process of the ninth thoracic vertebra.
Next, moxa Shenshu (BL23) acupoints, seven units each. Located one and a half cun lateral to the spinous process of the fourteenth thoracic vertebra.
Next, moxa Pangguangshu (BL28) acupoints, seven units each. Located one and a half cun lateral to the spinous process of the nineteenth thoracic vertebra.
Next, moxa Quchi (LI11) acupoints, seven units each. Located in the depression at the lateral end of the transverse cubital crease when the elbow is flexed.
Next, moxa Jianyu (LI15) acupoints, seven units each. Located in the depression between the acromion and the humerus at the shoulder tip.
Next, moxa Zhigou (TE6) acupoints, seven units each. Located two cun posterior to the wrist crease, between the radius and ulna.
Next, moxa Hegu (LI4) acupoints, seven units each. Located in the depression between the first and second metacarpal bones at the web of the thumb.
Next, moxa Jianshi (PC5) acupoints, seven units each. Located three cun proximal to the palmar wrist crease, between the two tendons.
Next, moxa Yanglingquan (GB34) acupoints, seven units each. Located in the depression anterior to the head of the fibula.
Next, moxa Yangfu (GB38) acupoints, seven units each. Located in the depression of the fibular notch above the lateral malleolus.
Next, moxa Kunlun (BL60) acupoints, seven units each. Located in the depression between the lateral malleolus and the calcaneal tendon.
The above acupoints primarily treat chronic wind, sudden wind, and various spasmodic winds. Symptoms include unawareness of onset, abdominal distension, hemiplegia, locked jaw with speechlessness, spontaneous salivation, closed eyes with deafness, whole-body cold rigidity, mental confusion, or erratic emotions.
