The Lung is the residence of the Po (Corporeal Soul), the source of Sheng Qi (Vital Energy), and it serves as the Hu Gai (Canopy) covering the five Zang organs. Externally, it nourishes the skin and hair; internally, it enriches the stomach and intestines. It forms an exterior-interior relationship with the Large Intestine, and the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian are its respective channels. When Qi flows smoothly, one can discern flavors and scents; when diseased, there is a tendency to cough. In excess conditions, clear nasal discharge occurs. Both deficiency and excess, cold and heat patterns, lead to wheezing and coughing. In excess conditions, dreams of weapons and warfare occur, accompanied by wheezing and chest fullness. In deficiency conditions, internal cold generates, leading to cough, shortness of breath, loose stools, lack of Qi and strength, and frequent feelings of sorrow. The Lung governs in Autumn. A pulse that is floating and light like a feather indicates a Ping (Normal) state. If the pulse feels like a feather but is firm in the center and empty on both sides, it is called Tai Guo (Excessive), indicating disease in the exterior. If the pulse is faintly like a feather, it is called Bu Ji (Deficient), indicating disease in the interior. Tai Guo causes Qi rebellion, chest fullness, and back pain. Bu Ji causes wheezing, coughing, rebellious Qi rising upward, hemoptysis, and loss of voice. Furthermore, a Lung pulse that fluctuates slightly and softly, resembling falling elm leaves, is Ping. A pulse resembling the feeling of stroking chicken feathers indicates disease. A pulse resembling a floating object or wind blowing the feathers on a bird's back indicates death. If the Lung pulse arrives large and empty, and feels like feathers piercing the skin, with red complexion and brittle hair, it indicates death. Additionally, a fine pulse is Ping; a coarse pulse is disease; a wiry pulse indicates spring pathology; severe wiriness indicates death. Furthermore, if Lung disease presents with vomiting blood or epistaxis, hot skin, rapid pulse, and red cheeks, it indicates death. If chronic cough involves blood, body heat, shortness of breath, and the pulse should be choppy but is instead floating and large, and the complexion should be white but is instead red, this represents Fire overcoming Metal, which is ten deaths out of ten and incurable. If Lung disease presents with wheezing and coughing, cold body without fever, and a slow, faint pulse, it is treatable. The Lung governs in Autumn, and its pulse should be floating, choppy, and short; this is termed Ping. Deviation from this constitutes disease. If the pulse is instead flooding, large, and long, this represents Fire burning Metal, which is also incurable. If the pulse is instead soft and slippery, it indicates Kidney Qi invading the Lung; it will heal spontaneously without treatment. If the pulse is instead floating, large, and moderate, it indicates Spleen Qi generating the Lung; it will recover without treatment. If the pulse is instead wiry and long, it indicates the Lung being subjected to Liver Qi forming a minor pathogen; although ill, life is not endangered. Deficiency leads to inability to breathe deeply, heavy body, dry throat, wheezing and coughing with rebellious Qi, shoulder and back pain. Accumulation causes hypochondriac pain. Wind-stroke causes dry mouth and wheezing, dizziness with heaviness, sweating with gastric stuffiness. Palpation of the pulse reveals weakness like a green onion leaf, lacking root at the bottom, indicating death. Internal heat causes spitting of blood; pulses that are fine, tight, floating, rapid, or knotted all indicate blood loss, caused by irritability, anger, and labor injury, resulting in Qi stagnation and obstruction. Furthermore, if a person wheezes with protruding eyes and a floating, large pulse, this confirms the diagnosis. In Fei Wei (Lung Withering), expectoration of saliva and foam occurs; if the throat is dry and the patient desires to drink, recovery is imminent; if they do not desire to drink, the condition has not resolved. Coughing with urinary incontinence occurs because upper deficiency fails to control the lower. A deep and turbid pulse indicates interior disease; a floating and clear pulse indicates exterior disease. Death of the Lung aperture manifests as open nostrils turning black, wheezing, and fixed staring eyes. Lung exhaustion leads to death within thirteen days. Symptoms include swollen feet, diarrhea and dysentery without awareness of expulsion, white face, and blue-green eyes; this is Jing Luan (Meridian Disorder). Even with destiny, it is untreatable. Red cheeks in Lung disease indicate death. Rapid speech, wheezing urgency, shortness of breath, and somnolence indicate "True Ghost Harm," representing a major reversal omen with fatal outcomes. Heat descending from above burns the Lung; the Lung binds pathogenic factors, causing distension, fullness, wheezing urgency, delirium, closed eyes, and symptoms beyond ordinary descriptions. With open mouth and nose, swelling of the head during urination, and excessive drinking, this is due to heat damaging Yang, transforming into Lung blood; it is incurable, leading to death in half a year. Lung disease causes Heart cold; severe cold leads to fever, alternating chills and fever with irregular timing, frequent fright, cough, and wheezing, with visual hallucinations. Pulses that are floating and tight, slippery and rapid, or slow, choppy, and small are all Lung disease pulses. Alternating chills and heat, cold nose, and red-white cheeks are all signs of Lung disease.
