Treats conditions after the resolution of variola (smallpox) or chickenpox, where nebulae (corneal opacities) suddenly appear, as well as acute red eyes caused by wind-toxicity.
Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn): Use one pair, bind one end with a rope, slice into thin shavings, obtain two liang of fine powder, and further grind into a flour-like consistency. Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Juemingzi (Cassiae Semen), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix).
The above nine ingredients are ground together into a fine powder. Each dose consists of two qian. Add two zhan of water, and decoct until one and a half zhan remains. Whenever preparing to take the medicine, first soak the powder in water overnight. The next day, boil this water along with the powder until cooked. Then transfer it into a porcelain bottle, seal tightly with oil-coated paper, and suspend it in a well overnight. Retrieve it the following day, warm it slightly, and gently sip before retiring to bed. Do not lie down on the pillow immediately. Efficacy will be seen by morning. For rapid results, take one dose on an empty stomach at noon each day.
Treats children who have suffered from long-term gan qi (childhood malnutrition syndrome) attacking the eyes since childhood, causing photophobia and nebulae formation, which persist despite prolonged treatment; or adults with nebulae obstructing vision but without damage to the eyeball itself.
Cu Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Shashen (Adenophorae Radix or Glehniae Radix), Yuanjingshi (Natrii Sulfas), Juemingzi (Cassiae Semen) (each one liang).
Grind the above into a powder. Each dose is half a qian. Take one sheep liver, cut slits into it using a bamboo knife, insert the powder into the slits, tie it with thread, place it in a bottle, and cook thoroughly in rice washing water (mi gan). Consume blandly. One liver is divided into three doses.
Treats Qingmang (blindness with normal external appearance). The essence of the five zang and six fu organs flows upward to nourish the eyes. If the zang-fu are deficient, wind-pathogens, phlegm, and fluid retention may invade. Heat causes redness and pain; absence of heat leads to internal obstruction. This is because the blood and qi of the zang-fu fail to sufficiently nourish the eyes. Thus, externally there is no abnormality, but vision is lost. If phlegm-heat is added, nebulae resembling fly wings may form, covering the eyeball. This prescription was transmitted by a master and is highly effective.
Shijueming (Haliotidis Concha), Caojueming (Cassiae Semen), Qingxiangzi (Celosiae Semen), Jingquanshi (Natron), Shetui (Bombyx Batryticatus), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (all in equal proportions).
The above seven ingredients must not come into contact with iron during processing. They should be pounded to a fine powder in a wooden mortar and sifted. Take one pig liver, remove the gallbladder and membranes, wash clean, and drain dry. Using a bamboo knife, make longitudinal cuts into the liver. Weigh out one liang of the aforementioned powder and insert it into each slit. Finally, tie securely with hemp thread, place in a raw silk bag, and secure tightly. Put into a pot (a clay or stone pot is also acceptable), add thick rice washing water (mi gan), and decoct. Add one handful of green bamboo leaves, one handful of Goji root (Gouqigen), and three yi of black beans. Continue boiling until the liver is cooked. Remove and let cool. Eat a full meal first, then slice the liver with a bamboo knife and consume it while slowly sipping the original broth. After finishing, eating the beans is permissible. For chronic cases, no more than two or three livers are needed for efficacy. Remember: when preparing the medicine, maintain cleanliness and reverence, and do not allow contact with iron. It will invariably be effective.
