The heaven has six pathogenic factors (Six Evils), namely Wind, Cold, Summerheat, Dampness, Dryness, and Fire; the human body has seven emotions (Seven Emotions), namely Joy, Anger, Sorrow, Thought, Worry, Fear, and Fright. When the Seven Emotions summon pathogens internally, and the Six Pathogenic Factors follow externally, if this continuous invasion occurs, diseases manifest according to the emotional summons. This is the origin of Heart Fire encroaching upon Lung Metal (Xin Huo Cheng Jin) and Kidney Water declining and being counter-controlled by Fire. It is commonly known that red eyes indicate Heat. However, without carefully examining the degree and type of redness, treatments vary. If the sclera (Bai Jing) is purely red like fire with intense heat radiating, it is a disease of excessive Heat counter-controlling (Yin Re Fan Ke); treat as described under "Excessive Heat Counter-Controlling." If the sclera is mixed red and white with swelling and flaccid puffiness of the eyelids, it is a disease of uncontrolled Wind-Heat (Feng Re Bu Zhi); treat as described under "Uncontrolled Wind-Heat." If the sclera is pale red with fine, deep-red vessels crisscrossing, it is a disease caused by the Seven Emotions, Five Thieves (Wu Zei - referring to pathological states of the five zang organs), overwork, and irregular diet; treat as described under "Seven Emotions, Five Thieves, Overwork, and Irregular Diet." If the sclera is neither swollen nor distended but suddenly appears streaked with blood, it is a disease where Blood is overcome by pathogens, coagulating and failing to circulate; treat as described under "Blood Overcome by Pathogens and Coagulation." If the sclera slightly turns bluish-green, the cornea (Hei Jing) takes on a whitish hue, and between the sclera and cornea, there is a red ring, termed Bao Lun Hong (Red Ring Encircling the Cornea), this is a disease of Evil Fire encroaching upon Lung Metal and Kidney Water declining to be counter-controlled by Fire. This condition may arise from long-standing eye disease causing depression and stagnation of spirit, or from excessive intake of cold-natured herbs during treatment, or from sexual excess during illness, all of which damage Yuan Qi (Primordial Qi). Once Yuan Qi is deficient, Heart Fire becomes hyperactive, thus allowing Fire to control Metal. Metal refers to the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, and the sclera belongs to the Lung; Water refers to the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, and the cornea belongs to the Kidney. Normally, Water controls Fire, but when Kidney Water is deficient and cannot control Fire, it is instead controlled by Fire. Consequently, vision becomes unclear, blurred as if in fog or dew, or the eyeballs become uneven in height, appearing lifeless and lusterless, accompanied by a red band encircling the cornea. If accompanied by dry mouth, bitter taste, excessive ocular discharge, astringency, and slight fever, the primary formulas are Huan Yin Jiu Ku Tang (Return to Yin and Save from Distress Decoction), Huang Lian Yang Gan Wan (Coptis and Sheep Liver Pill), and Chuan Xiong Jue Ming San (Ligusticum and Cassia Powder). If absent are dry mouth, bitter taste, excessive discharge, and astringency, the primary formulas are Zhu Yang Huo Xue Tang (Assist Yang and Invigorate Blood Decoction), Shen Yan Jin Jiu Wan (Divine Efficacy Golden Turtledove Pill), and Wan Ying Chan Hua San (Ten Thousand Responses Cicada Flower Powder). Regardless of the presence or absence of fever, Qian Jin Ci Zhu Wan (Magnetite and Cinnabar Pill from the Essential Prescriptions of a Thousand Gold) should be taken to subdue Heart Fire, nourish Kidney Water, and enrich Yuan Qi, leading to natural recovery. Alas! The six external pathogenic factors of heaven do not necessarily harm humans. It is only through the summoning effect of the seven emotions that harm occurs. If the seven emotions remain hidden and do not summon, how can the six pathogens follow? Those who reverse this process do more than merely avoid danger; they must cultivate themselves to achieve this state.
