The Lung belongs to Metal in the Five Elements; its nature is light, clear, and tends to float upward. Therefore, it strictly forbids the use of acrid-warm, hot, aromatic, and drying herbs. Although Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) tonifies Lung Qi, one must guard against "Lung heat injuring the Lung" again. Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) clears fire from the middle jiao, but one must prevent it from aiding phlegm and causing asthma due to mismatched indications. Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) is acrid and warm, assisting fire, and may instead support pathogenic factors, becoming repelled by the body. Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi) tonifies Kidney Yin; since the Kidney is the "child" organ of the Lung, as stated in the Classic: "In excess conditions, drain the child." Thus, the Kidney should be drained rather than tonified in this context. Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) is used for anhidrosis and dry skin, but one must worry about deficiency of the exterior (Wei Qi). Other herbs such as Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Caryophylli Flos (Dingxiang), Amomi Fructus Rotundus (Sharen), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Agastachis Herba (Huoxiang), Amomi Fructus (Kouren), Linderae Radix (Wuyao), Broussonetiae Folium (Caokou), Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma (Liangjiang), Evodiae Fructus (Zhyu), Long Pepper Fruit (Bibo), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), and Moschus (Shexiang), all possess acrid and aromatic properties, and are strictly prohibited. Dietary taboos include Sichuan pepper, ginger, sugar, vinegar, fish, turtle, shrimp, crab, pork, dog, beef, mutton, and horse meat, as well as all roasted foods. These not only aid pathogenic factors but may also cause epidemic qi (seasonal infectious diseases) to recur severely. Taboos should be observed for 49 days or more. Eggs should not be consumed as they may damage vision, and sugar may trigger gingival gangrene (Yagan). Only Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) and Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) may be used cautiously in cases of blood deficiency with pale complexion.
Why avoid Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang) and use Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou)? The rash originates in the Lung, which governs Qi. The Classic states: "Excess Qi becomes Fire." The Lung and Large Intestine are interior-exteriorly related; Lung heat transferring to the Large Intestine causes constipation. Therefore, Trichosanthis Semen (Gualou Ren) is used to moisten the Lung, assisted by Aurantii Fructus (Zhike) to widen the intestines, thereby relieving constipation naturally. Dahuang is called the "General" for its powerful purgative action; using it excessively may deplete Heart Blood and Qi, leading to Spleen dryness and rampant Lung Qi, exacerbating Wind-Fire.
