Li Dongyuan stated: Li Heshu had a son in his middle age. When the child was one year old, red thread-like tumors appeared on his body, and he could not be saved, eventually dying. Later, he had four more sons, all of whom died at the age of three from the same tumor disease.
Someone asked what the cause of this was. The next day, after pondering, Li Heshu said, "This is due to latent fire in your kidneys. Your essence contains many red threads, which are transmitted via Qi to the offspring, hence they suffer from this ailment." This is commonly known as "fetal tumor." You may observe it yourself, and indeed, it was as he said. Subsequently, Zishen Wan (Kidney-Nourishing Pill) was administered several times to drain the pathogenic fire in the kidneys and tonify the deficiency of true Yin. Alcohol, meat, and pungent-warm substances were forbidden. His wife used Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) to nourish Yin and blood. After five months of pregnancy, Huangqin Baizhu San (Scutellaria and Atractylodes Powder) was taken. The subsequent child did not exhibit the previous symptoms.
Another son, when sixteen years old, fathered a child at seven months gestation who suffered from Lin syndrome (dysuria). The condition recurred every five to seven days. Upon onset, severe pain occurred; only after urination became smooth and expelled approximately one cup of substance resembling lac mixed with millet grains did the pain subside. Palpation revealed a choppy pulse on light pressure and a wiry pulse on heavy pressure. Observing the father's emaciated and elongated physique with a dark, bluish complexion, it was inferred that the father must have taken drugs to consolidate the lower jiao, leaving residual heat in the fetus, which remained in the child's Mingmen (Gate of Life), causing the disease. Consequently, Zixue (Purple Snow) was combined with Huangbai powder to make pills the size of wutong seeds, dried thoroughly. One hundred pills were administered with decoction. Half a day later, two hundred more pills were given, followed by food to suppress the drug's action. Another half day later, the pain intensified, radiating to the waist, abdomen, and urinary tract, after which approximately one bowl of substance resembling lac mixed with millet grains was discharged, reducing the pain by eighty percent. Afterwards, Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, 1 liang), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, 5 qian), and Mutong (Akebia Stem, 5 qian) were prescribed. After discharging a similar amount, the patient stabilized. If the father's dryness-heat can afflict the child, how much more so if the mother is affected?
Jiang Huangnan treated an infant born a few days prior who frequently experienced fainting spells, occurring five or six times a day. Physicians treated it as wind-stroke (convulsions) without effect. Jiang Huangnan administered a strong decoction of a formula greatly tonifying Qi and Blood, feeding it to the infant while also having the wet nurse drink it. With continued administration, the frequency decreased gradually until recovery.
Xue Lizhai treated the grandson of Scholar Li, who presented with tidal fever but maintained normal appetite. Symptoms worsened during Shen and You hours (3 PM–7 PM) and ceased by Zi and Chou hours (11 PM–3 AM). The body surface resembled scabies, accompanied by constipation, dark and scanty urine, fever, thirst, and a preference for cold drinks. Xue diagnosed it as excess heat in the Spleen and Stomach transmitting to the Lung and Large Intestine. Qingliang Yin (Cooling Drink) was prescribed for four doses, after which the accumulated heat subsided. Subsequently, Siwu Tang (Four-Substance Decoction), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), and Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) were administered for several doses, leading to gradual healing of the skin lesions. Desiring rapid results, the family used Huaijiao Wan (Stemtree Bark Pill) instead, which exacerbated all symptoms. Xue reverted to the previous prescription, adding Taoren (Peach Seed) and Chishao (Red Peony Root), administering a total of one hundred doses before full recovery.
Jiang Huangnan treated an infant aged two months during intense summer heat following prolonged rain, with dampness prevalent. The infant had high fever throughout the body. However, newborns have fragile and narrow intestines and stomachs, making medication difficult to manage. Therefore, dry wall earth was collected, pounded into powder, and spread on the ground. Banana leaves were placed on top, and the infant was laid upon them. More banana leaves covered the infant, with a small amount of dry wall earth added on top. After sleeping for a short while, the high fever disappeared as if lost.
