Li Xingfu suffered from *meichuang* (Syphilis or a similar venereal disease characterized by foul ulcers). He mistakenly applied mercury and *fanqiao* (Ammonium Chloride) to the five centers (palms, soles, and chest). Within three days, his tongue became ulcerated, teeth fell out, throat tissue溃破 (ulcerated), and a foul odor filled the room. He vomited rotting flesh resembling pig liver in color, could not take in soup or water, experienced abdominal distension, and had no bowel or bladder movements. Physicians all declined treatment. Only throat medicines were blown into the throat, which exacerbated phlegm obstruction and unbearable pain, bringing him near death. Zhongchun (a physician) palpated his abdomen; it was non-tender. Although distended, it was not hard, indicating the pathogen had not reached the Heart. He determined that the mercury toxin had entered the abdomen but was not deep. The appropriate method was to use lead to absorb the toxin. He urgently used over one *jin* of black lead, divided into over a hundred pieces, combined with a large dose of *Ganjie Tang* (Licorice and Platycodon Decoction) ingredients: *Jinyinhua* (Honeysuckle Flower) and *Gancao* (Licorice Root), each four to five *liang*. Added two to thirty bowls of water, boiled in a pot until concentrated. First, took three to four bowls, mixed them into rice gruel, and slowly administered orally, allowing it to flow out naturally. After some time, his tongue gradually regained mobility, and his mouth was rinsed clean. He was then instructed to drink several cups freely. The dregs were taken separately and boiled again. Together with the previous concentrated decoction, the mixture was used frequently to wash the hands and feet. The next day, he passed countless amounts of black fluid through both bowels and bladder, and the condition stabilized. Subsequently, oral blowing medicines and herbs for resolving toxicity and supporting the interior were used. After several doses, he recovered.
Xue Lizhai treated Liu Huaifu, a Shujishi (Hanlin Academy Scholar). The patient experienced pain in the urethra, sometimes discharging white fluid, and sometimes suffering from scanty and difficult urination. Initially, *Xiaochaihu Tang* (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) was prescribed with *Shanzhi* (Gardenia Fruit), *Zexie* (Alisma Rhizome), *Huanglian* (Coptis Rhizome), *Mutong* (Akebia Stem), *Dancao* (Gentian Root), and *Fuling* (Poria), administered for two doses to clear Liver fire and drain damp-heat. Various symptoms gradually improved. Due to fatigue and overwork, he suddenly experienced chills and fever. *Buzhong Yiqi Tang* (Decoction to Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi) was used to stabilize the condition. Then, *Liuwei Wan* (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) was used to generate Liver blood and nourish Kidney water, leading to complete recovery.
A scholar suffered from itching in the urethra, fever, fatigue, and skin edema for two years. This was diagnosed as Yin deficiency of the Liver and Kidney. * Bazhen Tang* (Eight-Treasure Decoction) was added with *Chaihu* (Bupleurum Root), *Shanzhi*, and *Liuwei Wan*, resulting in a cure. In cases where parasites grew between the pubic hairs causing itching, crushed *Taoren* (Peach Seed) was applied topically.
Shishan treated a woman, nearly thirty years old, thin and pale. She usually coughed occasionally. Her menstruation was irregular. After cooling herself in summer, her cough worsened significantly, preventing her from lying down for over a month. Her sputum sometimes contained blood or pus. Severe coughing induced vomiting of food. Physicians used *Qin* (Scutellaria Root), *Lian* (Coptis Rhizome), and *Erchen Tang* (Two-Aged Phlegm Decoction) without effect. They then used tonics like *Renshen* (Ginseng Root), worsening the illness. Wang Ji (styled Shishan) examined the left pulse as floating and slippery, and the right pulse as slightly weak and slippery. The patient had an old wrist injury preventing palm extension, making the right pulse unreliable. Relying on the left pulse, he suspected pregnancy complicated by *Feiyong* (Lung Abscess). He administered formulas to clear and drain Lung heat. After three doses, she could lie down, stopped vomiting sputum, and expectorating pus ceased, though she occasionally experienced morning sickness. Wang Ji stated this is common in pregnancy. He advised decocting *Yiren* (Coix Seed), *Baizhu* (Atractylodes Rhizome), *Fuling*, *Maidong* (Ophiopogon Tuber), *Huangqin* (Scutellaria Root), and *Ejiao* (Donkey-hide Gelatin). Symptoms subsided. Over a month later, pulses were slightly slow and floating. He said, "Heat has decreased. However, excessive hematemesis damages Stomach Qi." He advised *Sijunzi Tang* (Four Gentlemen Decoction) with *Chenpi* (Tangerine Peel), *Huangqin*, and *Zhike* (Aurantium Fructus) for regulation. At six months of pregnancy, eating chicken triggered a relapse; stopping chicken cured it. At nine months, the illness recurred with hoarseness; drinking infant urine brought relief. Wang Ji said, "Recovery after childbirth is a good omen. If it recurs, it is beyond my knowledge." She delivered at term. Spleen and Stomach disorders recurred with diarrhea, and she could not be saved.
A scholar who loved drinking presented with coughing up sputum, neck stiffness, and lusterless skin. This was *Feiyong* (Lung Abscess). Since the Lung meridian connects to the neck, neck immobility occurred. Lung Qi deficiency caused lusterless skin. Initially, *Jiegeng Tang* (Platycodon Decoction) was used to treat the Lung. Later, *Bazhen Bufeitang* (Eight-Treasure Lung-Supplementing Decoction) was used to tonify Spleen Earth to generate Lung Metal, leading to recovery.
A man presented with a red face, expectoration of pus, fever, thirst, irritability, and a rapid, flooding, disordered pulse. This was Kidney Fire injuring the Liver. Initially, *Jiajian Bawei Wan* (Modified Eight-Ingredient Pill) with a large dose of *Maidong* was given. Fever and thirst stopped immediately. After sleeping, he felt refreshed and hungry. After two more doses, symptoms reduced by sixty to seventy percent. He continued the previous prescription, adding *Renshen* (5 qian), *Maidong* (2.5 qian), and *Wuweizi* (Schisandra Berry), decocted in water to replace tea, one dose daily. He stabilized after over a month. For this syndrome, a red face indicates tonifying Spleen and Kidney, while a pale face indicates tonifying Spleen and Lung; hence these prescriptions were used.
Jiang Yingsu treated Wang Binhuang, a Gongshi (Imperial Graduate), who suffered from dysentery with red and white discharge for over a month. Jiang diagnosed and prescribed medication for several doses, curing the dysentery. However, the six pulses remained flooding and rapid. Jiang told him, "You are elderly. The deficiency of the three Foot meridians prevents mutual generation. You must nourish the source of transformation, otherwise other diseases may arise." He prescribed *Liuwei Dihuang Wan* (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) plus *Shengmai San* (Generate the Pulse Powder). Due to delay in preparation for half a month, the patient felt pulling pain beside the right breast, flushed face, and expectorated foul-smelling sputum. Pulses were flooding, large, floating, and rapid, but empty upon pressure. Jiang said, "Intermittent rapid pulses indicate *Feiyong* (Lung Abscess)." The next day, he expectorated large amounts of pus and blood. *Jiegeng Tang* with *Lingyangjiao* (Antelope Horn) was administered without effect. Then, *Shengma Tang* (Cimicifuga Decoction) was given for over ten doses, along with the previous pill to nourish the source of transformation, leading to recovery.
Wang Yutai treated a woman who caught wind-cold. Using exterior-releasing agents caused instead coughing, wheezing, poor appetite, chest diaphragm discomfort, and constipation. The right Cun and Guan pulses were floating and rapid. A purgative was considered. Wang said, "This is due to Spleen Earth deficiency failing to generate Lung Metal. Further purging will consume body fluids, inevitably causing *Feiyong*." The patient did not believe him and was purged. Deficiency signs appeared fully, and pus was expectorated. Morning administration of *Yiqi Tang* (Qi-Supplementing Decoction) and evening administration of *Jiegeng Tang* were given for several doses. Then, morning *Yiqi Tang* and evening *Shiquan Dabu Tang* (Complete Great Tonifying Decoction) were given for fifty doses each, resulting in full recovery.
A woman presented with coughing up sputum, chest diaphragm pain, floating and slippery right Cun and Guan pulses, and neck tension. This was phlegm formed from accumulated heat in the Spleen and Stomach, not an abscess. *Erchen Tang* with *Shanzhi*, *Baizhu*, and *Jiegeng* was used, resulting in a cure.
