Cross the hands behind the neck and pull upward to the limit to treat pain in the hypochondriac region. Sit on the ground, cross the hands, grasp firmly, and stretch fully. Practicing this for a long time will make the body solid as steel, regulate the breath to be harmonious and long, with momentum like wind and clouds or thunder.
The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: Disorders of the Foot-Taiyang meridian cause lower back pain that radiates to the nape, spine, sacrum, and back, feeling heavy. Disorders of the Shaoyang meridian cause lower back pain as if pierced by needles, with a sense of tightness in the skin, inability to bend forward or backward, and inability to look around. Disorders of the Yangming meridian cause lower back pain with inability to look around, hallucinations of seeing things, and propensity to sadness. Disorders of the Foot-Shaoyin meridian cause lower back pain radiating to the medial aspect of the spine. Disorders of the Jueyin meridian cause lower back pain where the waist feels taut like the string of a drawn bow. Taiyin lower back pain feels as if a horizontal piece of wood is lodged in the lower waist; in severe cases, it leads to urinary incontinence.
It is also stated: The arrival of Taiyang qi manifests as lower back pain. Deficiency of Ju Yang (Great Yang/Taiyang) causes pain in the lower back, back, head, and nape. When the meridian undergoes pathological changes, there is a sensation of the neck being pulled out, pain along both sides of the spine, the waist feeling as if broken, and the thighs unable to flex.
The waist is the mansion of the Kidney. If turning and swaying becomes difficult, the Kidney is on the verge of exhaustion.
The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: Any exertion from lifting heavy weights, or excessive sexual intercourse leading to profuse sweating like bathing, damages the Kidney. Kidney distension presents with abdominal fullness radiating to the back, a sense of oppression, and bi-syndrome pain in the lower back.
Shen Zhuo disease (Kidney Fixation) presents with coldness from the waist downward and heaviness in the waist as if carrying five thousand coins.
There are five causes of lower back pain: First, insufficiency of Yang Qi and decline of Shaoyin Kidney essence, resulting in pain; Second, Wind-Bi, where wind, cold, and dampness adhere to the lower back causing pain; Third, Kidney deficiency due to overwork damaging the Kidney leading to exhaustion; Fourth, injury to the waist from falling in dangerous places causing pain; Fifth, lower back pain from sleeping in damp environments.
Chen Wuyue said: Lower back pain involving the six meridians is mostly due to external causes. Generally, Taiyang and Shaoyin meridians are prone to Cold invasion, Shaoyang and Jueyin meridians to Wind-Heat, and Taiyang and Yangming meridians to Dryness-Dampness, which can be extrapolated. Loss of will damages the Kidney, depression and anger damage the Liver, and worry and overthinking damage the Spleen, all leading to lower back pain because the Liver and Kidney are related to the Spleen and Stomach via exterior-interior relationships; stagnation of the Spleen and closure of the Stomach most easily cause lower back pain. Symptoms include emaciation and insufficiency, dark complexion, inability to travel far or stand for long periods, caused by loss of will. Abdominal urgency and hypochondriac distension, blurred vision, unfulfilled desires, indulgence of thoughts externally, flaccidity of the Zongjin (Conception Vessel/Groin tendons), and Baiyin (leukorrhea or spermatorrhea) are caused by depression and anger. Muscle maceration by dampness, numbness, indigestion, gastrointestinal distension, and qi obstruction sinking to affect the waist and hypochondrium are caused by worry and overthinking. These belong to internal causes. Shen Zhuo lower back pain presents with waist cold as ice, body heaviness without thirst, normal urination, normal appetite, and cold/heavy waist below as if carrying five thousand coins, resulting from sweating during labor, wearing cold/wet clothes, and developing over time. Hunchbacked buttocks and waist, swelling and heaviness radiating to the lateral costal margin pain, result from falls, stasis of evil blood, and exhaustion of essence and qi due to sexual fatigue. These belong to neither internal nor external causes.
