I have verified that Caodoukou is indeed the current Caoguo, hence ancestors included it in the Fruit section. Ben Cao Jing says: its shape resembles a longan (should be lychee). But it is sharper, shell slightly pale red with ridges, seeds inside like pomegranate seeds, taste extremely pungent. Locals pick fresh, pickle as fruit, to aid digestion and resolve alcohol hangover. This perfectly matches the shape, origin, and treatment of Caoguo, how detailed and complete. Why do modern doctors not verify its truth, blame Ben Cao Jing for omitting it, yet seek another Caodoukou, claiming its authenticity is hard to find, hence usage varies. In Jiangnan, Jianning Caoren is often used as Doukou; in Jiangbei, spicy peppers are used as Doukou, which greatly contradicts Ben Cao Jing's description of shape and origin. Today, enthusiasts add new entries for Caoguo in other collections, confusing notes, failing to realize Caodoukou is its true self; this error is worse than not verifying at all.
