Caused by emotional depression leading to liver dysfunction. Prolonged illness extends to the spleen and stomach, causing damage. Symptoms include poor appetite and loss of taste. Liver fire and wind move chaotically; qi stagnates horizontally causing pain and distension. Failure of dispersion and descent results in constipation or sudden diarrhea. For depression caused by emotions, although medicine may bring sudden relief, for chronic diseases lasting years accompanied by emaciation and fluid depletion, using acrid-dry herbs to forcibly attack will inevitably lead to rejection and middle jiao fullness. In such cases, combine with acrid-moistening herbs in small doses to harmonize yang.

Depression and weeping cause liver yang to move internally. Yang qi transforms into fire and wind, manifesting as有形 (tangible) and有声 (audible) symptoms, rushing through the diaphragm and throat. The sensation of cold is not true cold. The *Neijing* states that extreme emotions all transform into fire, but this is not due to external six climatic factors. Herbs like Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) and Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) cannot subdue it. Therefore, one must use softening and moistening methods, aligning with the principle that "the liver is a rigid organ, nourished by softness," which also belongs to the Harmonizing Method.

Long-standing depression causes qi and fire from the five emotions to rise. Stomach qi rebels, causing epigastric stuffiness and lack of appetite. Liver yang usurps upward, wind-fire attacks orifices, leading to vertigo and throat obstruction. The sensation of cold is not true cold. These are signs of qi blockage. The *Suwen: Bing Neng Pian* states that various forms of inhibition and shivering belong to fire. Danxi stated that ascending qi originates from the ministerial fire of the liver and gallbladder, which is well-founded.

Depression damages heart yang, causing yang to sink into yin, resulting in strangury and turbid urine. Caused by internal emotional injury, this is a disease of yin deficiency. Chaotic symptoms treated chaotically is the most mediocre approach. The heart stores the spirit; when spirit is exhausted, it becomes confused, and orifices lose their function. It cannot be treated with purely cold or hot medicines; the qi mechanism must be opened and refreshed to hope for recovery. Relying solely on the functions of herbal plants may not bring joy to the spirit.

Emotional depression causes heat steaming from the five emotions. Phlegm gathers and blocks qi, causing narrowness and discomfort in the epigastrium, with distension extending to the back. Upper jiao clear yang is about to knot. Treat the lung to unfold qi transformation, soothe with pleasantness to open the mind, and prevent depression from lingering.

In the elderly, emotional discomfort causes depression to transform mild fire into vigorous fire. There is hunger but epigastric discomfort, mouth and tongue ulceration. Heart and spleen nutritive blood are damaged, wood-fire scorches essence, muscles waste away daily. Only by being joyful and open can internal郁热 (depressive heat) be pacified. Clinging to clearing fire and bitter-cold herbs does not regulate internal depressive heat from emotions.

Illness began with upper damage due to worry. After two years of regulation with many relapses, this summer there is constant discomfort between the chest/heart and right hypochondrium. This indicates slight expansion of internal qi-blood depression; collateral vessels must have phlegm, food, and qi blockage. One should promote circulation and smooth the collaterals. Summer is suitable for advancement (note: 'Shang' usually refers to autumn, context implies seasonal regulation).

Continuous emotional depression causes heat steaming within viscera yin. Tongue is crimson, ulcerated, dry. Heart palpitations, feeling hungry, unable to increase food intake. Illness arising from internal emotional injury requires broad-mindedness and explanation. Heat is in the supreme yin; salty tonifies, bitter purges. This is the medical treatment.

Fear and anger both cause liver yang to rush upward. Blood boils, qi stagnates, turbidity forms. It should be promoted and guided downward. Due to mistaken use of astringents, old stasis remains unclear, new blood enters stasis collaterals, relapsing repeatedly for a month. Ultimately, liver and gallbladder qi-blood are depressed; they still need to be smoothed and promoted. Rectal prolapse occurs at the anus; treatment should be attempted when the body is slightly stronger.
Xuan Fu Hua (Inula Flower), Xin Jiang (New Crimson Fabric/Safflower), Qing Cong Guan (Green Onion Tube), Chao Tao Ren (Stir-fried Peach Kernel), Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed).
Living away from home causes discomfort in the bosom. Liver and gallbladder are depressed, ascending and descending lose balance. Qi sinks, essence opens, leading to seminal emission. Using Yu Nu (Cornus Fruit), Long Gu (Dragon Bone), Mu Li (Oyster Shell) makes qi herbs more stagnant. Regulating qi and harmonizing the liver achieved effect, but not fully cured. In current winter warmth, storage qi is not firm. After blood loss, hidden discomfort in the chest should not be treated with congealing yin methods; only descending qi and harmonizing blood is suitable.
