One dose produced a visible effect; after two doses, wheezing and coughing decreased by about 60-70%; after three doses, following the original prescription with Hangshao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) removed, phlegm-wheezing and coughing disappeared completely, and the patient began to take in some food. On the third day, Sini Tang (Four Reversal Decoction) was used with added Fuling (Poria), Shangrougui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae), Sharen (Amomi Fructus), and Kouqi (Astragali Radix).
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 100g, Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 50g, Fuling (Poria) 50g, Sharen (Amomi Fructus) 10g, Shangrougui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae) 10g (ground into powder, mixed with water and added to the decoction), Beiqi (Astragali Radix) 60g.
After taking one dose of the above prescription, there was an urgent need to defecate that night, and half a bedpan of dry, black stool was passed; the abdomen felt instantly relieved. However, due to old age and Qi deficiency, excessive straining during defecation caused immediate fainting and loss of consciousness. Emergency treatment revealed shortness of breath nearing cessation, a deep, slow, and weak pulse, but the white tongue coating had receded, and the lips and tongue had turned red. This was due to sinking of Qi deficiency. The prepared herbal decoction was immediately administered orally. Shortly after, consciousness was restored, and the pulse became vigorous. The original prescription was taken for three consecutive doses; appetite increased, spirit became robust, wheezing and coughing ceased, and both urination and defecation were unobstructed.
Wheezing and Asthma
Zheng XX, female, 25 years old, married, from Yunnan Province. She suffered from chronic asthma for fourteen years and was over four months pregnant at the time. She was admitted to a hospital under the Kunming Military Region and invited me for consultation on October 9, 1959. Inquiry into her medical history revealed that the illness began in childhood due to weakness and exposure to wind-cold. Improper medication and dietary management led to internal retention of wind-cold, combined with damp-phlegm counterflowing upward to the Lung. She frequently experienced wheezing and coughing, which worsened significantly during cold seasons. Over many years, this developed into chronic asthma. Symptoms included coughing with shortness of breath and wheezing, profuse white sputum, throat discomfort, and intermittent asthmatic wheezing. Her complexion was pale and lusterless, with bluish-black discoloration around the eye orbits and lips. She complained of chest oppression, shortness of breath, reluctance to speak, weak cough sounds, and abdominal pain radiating from the chest during coughing. She had poor appetite, no desire for water, short and turbid urine, and severe nighttime wheezing and coughing that prevented lying flat or sleeping. The tongue coating was white, slippery, thick, and greasy; the tongue body had a bluish tint. The pulse was wiry and slippery, becoming weak and forceless upon deep pressure. This syndrome resulted from wind-cold latent in the Lung and Stomach, prolonged coughing causing Qi deficiency in the Lung and Kidney, insufficient Yang to facilitate circulation, and obstruction by cold-dampness and phlegm-fluids. The treatment principle should be to open and lift Lung cold, tonify the Kidney to grasp Qi, and warm-transform damp-phlegm. The formula used was Xiaoqinglong Tang (Minor Green Dragon Decoction) with added Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata).
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 100g, Hangshao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 10g, Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) 10g, Beixixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) 6g, Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 30g, Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) 20g, Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) 5g, Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 10g, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 10g.
After two doses of the above prescription, large amounts of clear, thin, white sputum were expectorated; chest oppression, shortness of breath, and wheezing/coughing were significantly reduced; sleep duration improved to four or five hours; appetite increased; lips and tongue turned red but retained a slight bluish tint; and the thick, greasy tongue coating receded by half. Although effective, Yang Qi was not yet sufficient, and cold-dampness/phlegm-fluids were not fully cleared. Treatment continued with warming and transforming agents. The formula used was a combination of Sini Tang (Four Reversal Decoction) and Erchen Tang (Two Aged Substances Decoction) with added Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), and Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi).
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 200g, Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 40g, Fuling (Poria) 30g, Faxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) 15g, Guangchenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 10g, Beixixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) 8g, Mahuangrong (Ephedrae Herba apicalis) 10g (honey-fried), Shangrougui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae) 10g (ground into powder, mixed with water and added to the decoction), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 10g.
After taking the above prescription, wheezing and coughing decreased further. The treatment principle remained unchanged, using this formula with modifications based on symptoms. After more than twenty doses, asthma and cough gradually subsided. After another ten-plus doses, the illness was cured, the pregnancy remained safe, and she delivered a healthy baby full-term. Both mother and child were healthy postpartum.
Note: It is traditionally said that Utou (Aconiti Radix), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) are contraindicated during pregnancy. This is not entirely accurate. Raw forms of these herbs are toxic and indeed unsafe. However, if processed and decocted properly to remove toxicity, they can be used according to the specific condition without harming the pregnant woman. Pregnancy makes the body vulnerable, and disease can easily damage fetal Qi. Prescribing formulas and herbs based on the syndrome ensures the elimination of pathogenic factors while preserving righteous Qi, which is essential for securing the fetus. The *Neijing* states: "In pregnant women, how should toxic substances be used... If there is a cause [pathogen], there will be no destruction [of the mother or fetus]." This means that when a disease exists, the corresponding medicine is used; the disease bears the impact of the medicine, so neither the mother nor the fetus is harmed. In my decades of clinical practice, adhering to these classical principles has yielded many verified results, providing significant benefit.
Deficiency Consumption and Coughing
Zhang XX, male, 25 years old, from Sichuan Province. He suffered from deficiency consumption and coughing in 1923, lasting several months. Initially presenting with night sweats, spermatorrhea, poor appetite, and insomnia, he sought medical help without success. Recently, he experienced aversion to cold in the afternoon followed by tidal fever. His cheeks and lips were bright red, accompanied by spontaneous and night sweats, worse at night. He had difficult expectoration, hoarse cough, and hemoptysis filling a bowl. He suffered from tinnitus, blurred vision, frequent dizziness, shortness of breath with wheezing, mental fatigue, and inability to sleep. The pulse was deficient, rapid, and forceless; the root of the tongue had a white, greasy coating. Reviewing his previous prescriptions, they all treated Yin deficiency with heat, employing methods such as clearing the Metal and moistening the Lung to stop cough, nourishing Yin and descending fire to calm the Liver, cooling blood and stopping bleeding to eliminate bone-steaming consumption fever, among others, totaling over a hundred doses. He also took various Western medicines, but his chronic illness persisted and worsened. This illness likely originated from congenital insufficiency and severe Kidney Qi depletion. Internal deficiency of True Yang failed to anchor and subdue Yin pathogens. Yin-cold and damp-water, carrying turbid phlegm, counterflowed upward to the Lung, obstructing the ascending and descending mechanisms of Lung and Kidney Qi. Exterior Yang lost its security, and Ying-Yin failed to consolidate, leading to easy sweating. The already deficient Yang lacked strength to control blood, causing it to scatter and overflow outside the vessels, resulting in hemoptysis. Yin and Yang struggled against each other; deficient Yang was rejected by Yin-cold to the exterior, causing tidal fever. Since Yin Qi is stronger in the afternoon, the deficient heat appeared even more floating. Although fever was accompanied by aversion to cold and a rapid pulse, the physical constitution was weak and soft, indicating a complete picture of Yang deficiency and Yin-cold, unlike lung dryness and hemoptysis caused by Yin deficiency with hyperactive fire. Previous treatments contradicted the syndrome, going in the wrong direction, yielding no results. For such a syndrome, only by following the *Neijing*'s principle of using sweet-warm herbs to reduce fever could vitality be restored.
The formula used was Gancao Ganjiang Tang (Licorice and Dried Ginger Decoction) with added Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata).
Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 24g, Pao Heijiang (Charred Black Ginger) 15g, Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 45g, Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) 3 pieces (charred black but retaining nature).
After one dose, hemoptysis stopped. After two more doses, wheezing and coughing slightly stabilized, and spirit improved. A modified Sini Tang (Four Reversal Decoction) was then prescribed.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 60g, Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Pao Heijiang (Charred Black Ginger) 15g each, Xi Sharen (Amomi Fructus) 15g, Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 15g, Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) 4 pieces (charred black but retaining nature).
After taking the medicine, profuse sputum mixed with black blood was expelled. This indicated that the Yang-warming herbs facilitated circulation, and blood that had left the vessels was being eliminated with the turbid phlegm. Four consecutive doses were administered; tidal fever receded by half, bloody sputum disappeared, and all symptoms improved. Black, jam-like loose stools were passed, indicating the descent of turbid Yin. The pulse became slower and slightly stronger; appetite slightly increased. The condition showed significant improvement. Following the previous formula, Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) was removed, dosages were doubled, and Fuling (Poria) 30g and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 18g were added. After five doses, the redness of cheeks and lips receded, wheezing stabilized by 80-90%, mild tidal fever occurred, and sound sleep was achieved. Cough and sputum decreased, and cough sounds became louder, indicating the free flow of Lung Qi. After several more doses, tidal fever ceased, appetite doubled, and cough/sputum further reduced. Suddenly, generalized edema appeared, especially on the face and feet. The family, seeing the swelling, did not recognize it as a sign of Yin-pathogen retreat and Yuan-Qi recovery, and became fearful. They consulted other doctors who diagnosed "poisoning from mistaken use of Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata)" and prescribed Moutun Dou (Phaseoli Semen), Chuanbeimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), Mudong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Yangshen (Panacis Quinquefolii Radix), Pipaye (Loquat Leaf), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Su Zi (Perillae Fructus), Fumao (Corn Silk), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), and Zhi Cao (Honey-fried Licorice). Unexpectedly, that night, wheezing and coughing suddenly returned, Qi stagnation and phlegm surging occurred, and fever reignited. Panicked, they urged my return. I learned the family's ignorance of medical principles and constant doctor changes nearly ruined previous efforts. I advised them firmly, advocating large doses of acrid-warm herbs to reverse the critical situation. The formula used was:
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 200g, Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 60g, Beixixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) 6g, Mahuangrong (Ephedrae Herba apicalis) 4g, Shangrougui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae) 12g (ground into powder, mixed with water and added to the decoction), Fuling (Poria) 60g, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 24g.
After taking the medicine, slight sweating occurred, and fever subsided. After three consecutive doses, urination became smooth, and edema completely resolved. The original formula was adjusted by removing Mahuangrong (Ephedrae Herba apicalis) and adding Sharen (Amomi Fructus) 15g. After five doses, cough and sputum reduced by 70-80%. Diet and spirit improved. Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) was removed, and Kouqi (Astragali Radix) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 30g each were added. After ten more doses, all symptoms disappeared. Only Yuan-Qi was still insufficient, so Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Middle-Supplementing Decoction) with modifications was used for convalescence. After twenty-plus doses, health was fully restored.
Kouqi (Astragali Radix) 100g, Guijian (Cinnamon Twig tip) 24g, Hangshao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 24g, Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 150g, Dangshen (Codonopsis Radix) 20g, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 20g, Xi Sharen (Amomi Fructus) 15g, Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) 4 pieces, Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 30g, Yitang (Maltose) 30g (melted and added to the decoction).
Childhood Consumption Tuberculosis
Son of Zhang XX, male, 8 years old, from Yongren County, Yunnan Province. Congenital insufficiency, emaciated physique, prone to illness, occasional abdominal pain, profuse phlegm, slow cough, and poor appetite. This was congenital deficiency, Spleen deficiency failing to transport, with Yin-cold and damp-water infiltrating internally. On a certain day in June 1922, illness began after cold exposure. The pulse was floating and slippery, with a tight quality; the fingerprint was pale and blue; the tongue coating was white and slippery with a bluish tongue body. Clear nasal discharge, cough with phlegm surging, fever, aversion to cold, dizziness, headache, and preference for hot drinks. The cause was exterior wind-cold pathogen triggering internal retention of cold-dampness and fluid. Lung Qi was obstructed, clear-descending function failed, Spleen failed to transform, damp-water was not metabolized, and Taiyang meridian Qi movement was blocked. Xiaoqinglong Tang (Minor Green Dragon Decoction) with added Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) was planned to assist Yang, release the exterior, transform fluids, and eliminate phlegm.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 30g, Guijian (Cinnamon Twig tip) 10g, Mahuangrong (Ephedrae Herba apicalis) 3g, Beixixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) 3g, Hangshao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 6g, Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) 2g, Xiaozao (Jujubae Fructus) 7 pieces, Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 10g.
After taking the medicine, slight sweating occurred, fever subsided, and exterior pathogens were resolved. However, coughing with profuse clear-thin sputum persisted. This indicated residual cold-phlegm and deficiency of Spleen and Lung Qi. Adhering to the original formula, Hangshao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) and Mahuangrong (Ephedrae Herba apicalis) were removed, and Fuling (Poria) 10g and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 12g were added. After two doses, diet normalized. Still, clear nasal discharge, profuse sputum, facial edema, afternoon tidal fever, spontaneous sweating, and occasional dull abdominal pain persisted. Although exterior pathogens were resolved, internal cold-phlegm and fluid retention were heavy. The acrid-warm herbs facilitated circulation, stirring up internal fluid retention to be expelled. The goal was to completely eliminate stagnant fluid and cold-phlegm to cure the chronic condition. Unfortunately, Mr. Zhang lacked full trust in me and consulted other TCM doctors. One claimed "mistaken use of Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) caused untreatable poisoning." Another claimed "damp-heat obstructing the Middle Jiao," prescribing heat-clearing and damp-draining herbs. After several doses, not only did the original illness persist, but it worsened. Nasal discharge became watery, afternoon tidal fever intensified, sweating was profuse, coughing/sputum involved shortness of breath and wheezing, food intake ceased, body emaciated, limbs cold, and life seemed near extinction. A Western doctor was consulted, diagnosing "mistaken use of Ginger and Aconite burned up lung fluids" (Question: If nasal discharge is lung fluid, and it were burned up, how could nasal discharge remain watery?). He prescribed "Lung-Protecting Water Syrup," claiming curative effects. Immediately after ingestion, wind-stroke symptoms appeared: eyes rolling up, lips retracted and blue, limb coldness and convulsions, sweating nearing cessation, life hanging by a thread. Mr. Zhang panicked and urgently summoned me, recounting the mismanagement. Unwilling to watch him die, I strove to restore the critical condition, advocating large doses of modified Sini Tang (Four Reversal Decoction).
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 100g, Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 40g, Sharen (Amomi Fructus) 10g, Shangrougui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae) 10g (ground into powder, mixed with water and added to the decoction), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 10g.
After two doses, wind-stroke symptoms decreased, and convulsions stopped. On the next day's follow-up, all symptoms improved. After two more doses, sudden generalized edema, coughing, and profuse sputum appeared, but tidal fever had receded, cold extremities warmed, and slight food intake resumed. I explained this was a sign of Yin-cold/damp-water pathogen being transformed and scattered by Yang-warming herbs, indicating Yuan-Qi recovery. Currently, Yang is weak and Qi is deficient, requiring continued warming support. Following the original formula, Kouqi (Astragali Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Fuling (Poria) were added. After dozens of doses, full efficacy was achieved. This case is known as "Childhood Consumption Tuberculosis." Throughout treatment, approximately ten jin (Chinese pounds) of Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) were consumed without poisoning reactions or evidence of burning Yin fluids. Post-recovery, the child's health and physique were richer than before, remaining well for years.
Kidney Edema (Chronic Nephritis with Ascites)
Shen XX, male, 30 years old, from Zhejiang Province, a cadre in an agency in Xiaguan City, Yunnan Province. Suffering from "chronic nephritis" for over a year, local treatment was ineffective. Due to abdominal edema and ascites, extreme physical weakness led to transfer to a hospital in Kunming. After over a week of hospitalization, efficacy was poor. Invited for consultation on December 12, 1958. Patient presented with facial edema, puffy lower eyelids like silkworms, pale and dull complexion, bluish-black lips, drowsiness without spirit, extreme fatigue, abdominal distension like a gourd, lower limb edema (pitting below the shins and ankles that did not easily rebound), heaviness in bed, difficulty turning. Inquiry revealed weak voice, complaints of abdominal bloating, continuous soreness/pain in waist and back, dragging pain in lower abdomen, bland taste, no appetite, no thirst, and scanty urine. Tongue examination: moist but pale with bluish tint, slippery gray-black coating. Pulse: deep, slow, and forceless. This syndrome resulted from Spleen and Kidney Yang deficiency, cold-water and damp-earth, causing flooding of cold-water. The treatment principle should be supporting Yang, warming cold, transforming Qi, and promoting diuresis. The formula used was Sini Wuling San (Four Reversal and Five-Ling Powder) with modifications.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 100g, Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 40g, Huajiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) 7g (stir-fried to remove oil), Zhuling (Polyporus) 15g, Fuling (Poria) 30g, Tiaogui (Cinnamon Twig) 15g.
After four doses, urination suddenly became clear, long, and smooth; facial and foot edema subsided; ascites reduced by 60-70%; weight decreased by 21 jin; waist/back pain greatly reduced, though soreness/distension remained. Appetite slightly improved, spirit increased. Gray-black tongue coating receded, revealing white slippery coating. Pulse became harmonious and slow, though body remained weak. Treatment continued with supporting Yang and warming transformation.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 100g, Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 50g, Wuyu (Evodiae Fructus) 10g, Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) 30g, Yiren (Coicis Semen) 10g, Zhuling (Polyporus) 10g, Fuling (Poria) 30g.
After four consecutive doses, ascites reduced by 70-80%, complexion improved, spirit and diet increased, bluish tongue tint receded to pale red and moist, coating became thin white and slippery, pulse harmonious with spirit and root. Major illness receded, Yang spirit still deficient, residual pathogens not fully cleared. Only by strengthening Heart and Kidney Yang, maintaining the warming-transformation method, could full efficacy be achieved. Formula adjusted accordingly.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 150g, Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 50g, Shangrougui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae) 10g (ground into powder, mixed with water and added to the decoction), Sharen (Amomi Fructus) 10g, Heichou (Momordicae Semen) 20g, Fuling (Poria) 50g, Gongding (Syzygdii Flos) 10g.
After four doses, cold-water and Yin pathogens were almost entirely eliminated. After one week of convalescent care, the patient recovered and was discharged.
Damp-Turbidity Stone (Renal Calculi - Deficiency-Cold Pattern)
Huang XX, male, 44 years old, from Hubei Province, military representative at a factory in Haikou, Kunming. Hospitalized in a Kunming Military Region hospital for years of lower back pain. X-ray examination revealed ten stone shadows in the right renal pelvis, ranging from size of Sichuan pepper to broad bean. Diagnosed with "renal calculi." Due to physical weakness unable to tolerate surgery, he was discharged in November 1958 and sought my treatment. He reported long-standing lower back pain, occurring intermittently, cramping pain extending to waist and abdomen, radiating to the genitals. Severe pain caused fear, aversion to cold, and cold limbs. Lower abdominal distending pain, short and astringent urination. Poor diet, lack of spirit. Tongue coating white, slippery, and thick/greasy. Pulse deep, slow, and forceless. This was due to extreme cold in the Kidney, failure to transform cold-dampness, leading to internal formation of stones. The treatment principle was warming the Kidney, supporting Yang, and warming transformation. The formula used was Sini Tang (Four Reversal Decoction) with modifications.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 60g, Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex) 10g, Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) 30g, Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 40g, Fuling (Poria) 30g, Shangrougui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae) 10g (ground into powder, mixed with water and added to the decoction), Beixixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) 6g, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 6g.
After eleven doses, four stones were sequentially passed through the urethra. One larger stone lodged at the urethral opening, interrupting urine stream and causing severe pain; it was extracted by the factory doctor with tweezers, resembling a small corn kernel, causing slight bleeding at the urethral opening. Follow-up X-ray showed six remaining stones, all smaller than before; the one previously the size of a broad bean was no longer visible. This was due to the warming-transforming agent. However, due to long-standing Kidney cold, lower back remained cold and painful, and stones were not fully dissolved/expelled. The method remained unchanged, continuing to support Yang and warm-transform.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 100g, Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 50g, Gouji (Cibotii Rhizoma) 10g, Beixixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) 6g, Yiren (Coicis Semen) 30g, Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) 30g, Shangrougui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae) 10g (ground into powder, mixed with water and added to the decoction), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 10g.
Due to effective medication and unwavering confidence, continuous intake significantly reduced the condition, increased appetite and spirit, and greatly improved physique. Work resumed in January 1959. After dozens of doses, lower back pain ceased. Follow-up in March 1959 brought X-ray photos showing nine of ten stones eliminated, with the last one significantly smaller. Adjustments to the formula continued, adhering to the principles of strengthening Heart, warming Kidney, and regulating/tonifying Qi and Blood. Months later, the final stone was passed with urine. Health was restored, and normal work resumed.
Jueyin Disease Testicular Retraction Syndrome
Ma XX, male, 27 years old, Outpatient No. 9546. Right testicular swelling and pain for over two months, gradually subsiding after treatment. One night, the right testicle suddenly retracted into the lower abdomen. Lower abdomen cramped and painful, radiating to the waist, inability to extend, severe pain radiating to umbilicus and abdomen, down to limbs causing spasms and inability to flex. Face turned blue, cold sweat profuse. Relatives with basic medical knowledge believed this was due to Kidney Essence depletion and prescribed Yin-nourishing/Kidney-tonifying herbs, which provided no relief. Sent to the outpatient department affiliated with the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Examination revealed blue complexion, abdominal pain groaning, sorrowful expression, spiritless eyes, blue sclera, bluish lips/tongue/nails. Tongue coating white and greasy, cold hands and feet, deep, fine, wiry, and tight pulse. No food or water for two days. This was Liver and Kidney Yang deficiency, excessive Yin-cold in Jueyin, insufficient Yang to warm tendons and vessels. The *Neijing* states: "The Liver is the Jueyin meridian... runs along the inner thigh, enters the pubic region, passes through the genitalia, reaches the lower abdomen..." Meridians lacking nourishment led to cramping and retraction, causing testicular retraction and pain, meaning "cold causes contraction."
