(Explanation of the Seven Symptoms Diagrams)
[Rotten Throat Bi]
This condition arises from heat-toxin in the Liver and Stomach combined with an external contraction of seasonal pathogens. The throat appears petal-like, with rotting, swelling, and white spots. It causes severe pain, crying out, inability to eat, upward deviation of the eyes, and a flooding pulse (Hong Mai) in all six positions. Acupuncture should be applied at Shaoshang (LU11), Shangyang (LI1), Guanchong (SJ1), and Shaoyin (KI2/HT7 - referring to eight acupoints on both hands). If blood flows upon pricking, the prognosis is good; if no blood flows, the prognosis is fatal. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with: Raw Rhubarb (Wuqian), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, two qian, stir-fried with salt water), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, two qian, stir-fried with wine), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, two qian), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, two qian), Fu Shi (Pumex, two qian), Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus, one qian), and Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis, one qian). After taking two doses, remove the Raw Rhubarb and revert to the base Liuwei Tang, then add: Raw Gypsum (Sanqian), He Zi (Chebulae Fructus, 1.5 qian), Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed, two qian, used whole), and Banbei (half cup of prepared Cypress Branch Juice). Taking four doses will result in recovery. Additionally, blow Jinebuwan powder into the throat and take Baxian San (Eight-Immortal Powder) concurrently, two qian daily, dissolved in saliva and swallowed. If the body temperature becomes cool in this condition, it is difficult to treat.
[White Throat Bi]
This condition results from Cold invading the Lungs and Stomach, presenting with a slow pulse and fever. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with: Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, three fen), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, two qian), Su Ye (Perillae Folium, two qian), and Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, one qian). Two doses can cure it. If after two doses the condition turns red with dryness and pain, remove the previous four herbs and substitute with: Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, wine-fried), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), and Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), each one qian. If there is excessive phlegm, add Fu Shi (Pumex), Zhi Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma preparatum), and Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix), each one qian.
[Cold-Lodged Throat Bi]
This condition presents with a relaxed Lung meridian pulse, heavy Cold, purple coloration, and minimal swelling. Because cooling agents were taken previously, rotting will inevitably occur over time. Whenever a purple throat is observed, it must not be treated as a Fire syndrome. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with: Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, five fen), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, one qian), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, one qian), Su Ye (Perillae Folium, one qian), Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus, one qian), He Zi (Chebulae Fructus, one qian), and Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus, one qian). In severe cases where purple blood clots are vomited, the same treatment applies. For cases not yet rotted, add: Su Ye (Perillae Folium, two qian), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, three fen), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, one qian), and Hai Fu Shi (Pumex, 1.5 qian). Treatment is the same regardless of whether swelling is present or absent.
