Epiglottis Poisoned by Stomach Toxin
This condition arises from toxin accumulation and knotting in the Stomach. It manifests on the uvula (soft palate appendage), with a morphology similar to the previously described syndrome. If the Stomach pulse is deep and surging, it indicates true toxin knotting; clinicians must not disregard this. In cases presenting with redness, swelling, and ulceration, the treatment method remains the same. Administer Eighteen-Ingredient Divine Medicine combined with Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill), one qian daily. Use forty taels of Smilax Glabra Rhizome (Tufuling) daily, decocted as a substitute for water, with greater quantity being preferable. After one month of administration, if there is no improvement, combine one dose of Jiedu Zijin Dan (Purple Gold Pill for Resolving Toxins) with Yushu Dan, taken together and washed down with Smilax Glabra Rhizome decoction. Take three qian morning and evening to conclude the treatment.
Accumulated Heat Epiglottis Syndrome
This condition is caused by the rampant fire-toxin in the Liver and Stomach meridians. Consequently, the uvula becomes elongated and hard, covered completely with white coating, making swallowing difficult, and the Right Guan pulse is floating and large. Prescribe Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) with additions: Gardenia Fruit (Shanzhi, 1 qian), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao, 2 qian), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) stir-fried with wine (2 qian), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai, 0.8 qian), Raw Gypsum Sherd (Sheng Shigao, 3 qian), Talcum (Huashi, 2 qian), Red Peony Root (Chishao, 1 qian), Kudzu Root (Gegen, 1 qian), Akebia Stem (Mutong, 1 qian), Human Placenta (Heche, 2 qian). Apply Jinbuhuan (Golden Immortal Powder) via insufflation into the throat, followed by internal administration of Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill). Two or three doses will invariably result in recovery.
Pure White Epiglottis Syndrome
This condition results from accumulated toxin in the Stomach, causing the uvula to suddenly turn white, becoming soft, enlarged, and painful. The Right Guan pulse is surging and deep. First, administer Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill), seven fen per dose, for five to ten doses. Subsequently, use Smilax Glabra Rhizome (Tufuling) decoction as a substitute for water, followed by administering twenty-one doses of Guangchuang Yao (Broad Sore Medicine), taken with Silver Flower (Jinyinhua) decoction. If the Stomach pulse is not deep but instead floating and surging, treat it as a Fire syndrome. Prescribe Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) with additions: Raw Gypsum Sherd (Sheng Shigao, 3 qian), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) stir-fried with wine (2 qian), Gardenia Fruit (Shanzhi, 1 qian), Plantago Seed (Cheqianzi, 2 qian), Akebia Stem (Mutong, 1 qian), Talcum (Huashi, 2 qian), Kudzu Root (Gegen, 2.2 qian), Trichosanthes Root (Tianhuafen, 1.5 qian), Sophora Root (Shandougen, 2.2 qian), for two or three doses. This single syndrome thus has two distinct treatment methods. Clinicians must carefully analyze the pulse principles before prescribing medication to ensure appropriateness.
