Commentary states: Cheilitis (lip sores) arises because of heat in the Spleen and Stomach. The pathogenic heat follows the meridians outward to manifest on the lips, thus generating sores. Generally, the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian descends along the lateral aspect of the nose, enters the upper dental gap, returns to emerge encircling the lips. The *Neijing* states that the Spleen harmonizes with the muscles, and its luster manifests in the lips. Therefore, the meridians of the Spleen and Stomach correspond to the lips. When pathogenic heat rides the meridians and rushes forth, sores arise on the lips.
