Commentary states: If a person ingests Gu (a poison made from aggregated venomous insects), it enters the abdomen with food and drink, capable of confusing and altering the functions of the Five Viscera. Children are sometimes afflicted by this, resulting in stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, and mental restlessness and oppression. In acute cases, death occurs immediately; in chronic cases, it persists for years, gradually leading to emaciation and debility. If the Gu toxin transmits to others, it forms the disease known as "Gu Zhu" (Infectious Gu).
To treat children suffering from Gu toxin poisoning, characterized by an abdomen hard as stone, cyanotic and yellowish complexion, dribbling urination, and unpredictable symptom variations, use Lingyangjiao Tang (Antelope Horn Decoction):
Yangjiao (Crushed Antelope Horn) 1 liang, He (Lotus part, likely stem or leaf) 1 liang, Zhizi Ren (Gardenia Seed) 7 pieces, Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, remove stamens), Chishaoyao (Red Peony Root), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex) (each 1 fen).
Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn, crushed) 0.5 liang.
The above seven herbs are coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose consists of 2 qianbi (approx. 3-6g depending on era/measure), boiled in 1 xiaozhan (small cup) of water until reduced to 60%, strained, and taken warm in two divided doses. Administer three times daily, adjusting dosage according to the child's age and size.
To treat endemic Gu toxin poisoning in children, use Shengma Tang (Cimicifuga Decoction):
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 0.5 liang, Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, sliced and stir-fried) 0.5 liang, Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix) 0.5 liang.
The above three herbs are coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose consists of 1 qianbi, boiled in 0.5 zhan of water until reduced to 30%, strained, and taken warm. Administer three times daily, adjusting dosage according to the child's age and size.
To treat children with Gu infection causing hardness and pain in the abdomen, use Gupi Tang (Drum Skin Decoction):
Baigupi (Aged Drum Skin, 3 fen, roasted until yellow and sliced), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, sliced), Hegen (Lotus Root, each 1 liang).
The above three herbs are coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose consists of 2 qianbi, boiled in 1 zhan of water until reduced to 60%, strained, and taken warm in two divided doses. Administer three times daily, adjusting dosage according to the child's age and size.
To treat children with Feigu (Flying Gu), presenting with symptoms similar to ghostly possession, use Xionghuang San (Realgar Powder):
Xionghuang (Realgar, ground), Shexiang (Moschus, ground), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn, shaved and ground into fine powder, each 0.5 liang).
The above three ingredients are mixed thoroughly. Each dose is 0.5 qianbi, mixed with warm water. Administer four times daily, adjusting dosage according to the child's age and size.
To treat five types of Gu toxin in children, use Bisheng Tang (Bisheng Decoction):
Malingshen Gen (Root of Aristolochia/Mayapple, specific botanical identity varies in historical texts).
The single herb is coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose consists of 2 qianbi, boiled in 1 xiaozhan of water until reduced to 50%. Strain and take on an empty stomach in one dose. The Gu should be vomited out immediately. If vomiting is incomplete, administer again.
Another prescription:
Baigupi (Aged Drum Skin, 1 jin, burnt to ash).
The single ingredient is finely ground into powder. Take 1 qianbi mixed with rice gruel juice on an empty stomach. After a short while, the sick child will call out the name of the Gu master, and the illness will be cured.
Another prescription:
Ji (Shepherd's Purse, 1 liang).
The single ingredient is pounded and sifted into powder. Take 1 qianbi mixed with rice gruel juice, adjusting dosage according to the child's age and size.
To treat children with Gu toxin poisoning, characterized by abdominal hardness and pain, cyanotic and yellowish complexion, severe emaciation, and unpredictable pathological changes, use Shengong San (Divine Merit Powder):
Taoshang Jisheng (Parasite growing on peach tree, 2 liang).
The single ingredient is pounded and sifted into powder. Take 0.5 qianbi per dose, administered like tea. Administer three times daily.
Another prescription:
Shexiang (Moschus).
The single ingredient is finely ground. Take 1 yizi (approx. 0.5-1g) per dose, mixed with warm water on an empty stomach. This induces vomiting of the Gu toxin. If ineffective, administer again.
To treat critical cases of Gu poisoning in children, use Zaizao Tang (Rebirth Decoction):
Gancao (Licorice Root, 0.5 liang, raw and sliced).
The single herb is coarsely pounded and sifted. Boil in 1 zhongzhan of water until reduced to 50%. Strain and take warm in two divided doses. This should induce vomiting of the Gu toxin. For prophylaxis against Gu, roast the Gancao thoroughly, boil the juice, and consume it. This allows the toxin to dissipate internally without vomiting, yielding miraculous results.
