Commentary states: Human body fluids, nasal discharge, saliva, and spittle become dry and withered when exposed to heat, and flow excessively when exposed to cold. In infants, due to untimely adjustment of clothing, wind-cold pathogens invade the Lung Meridian, or cold damages the fontanelle area. All these conditions cause the infant's nasal discharge and tears to be uncontrollable, because the Lung Qi connects to the nose, and brain fluid flows downward to connect to the nose.
For treating excessive turbid nasal discharge in infants, Chrysanthemum Decoction (Juhua Tang):
Chrysanthemi Flos (selected), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (roasted, each 1 fen), Saposhnikoviae Radix (devoid of forked branches, 0.5 liang), Corni Fructus (7 pieces).
The above four herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Each dose is one qian bi (a small spoonful measure). Add one zhan (unit of volume) of water, decoct until reduced to six-tenths, remove the dregs, and divide into three warm doses. Take one dose each in the morning, at noon, and after evening, adjusting the dosage according to the child's age and size.
For treating lung injury by cold in infants with turbid nasal discharge, Peucedani Radix and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Decoction (Qianhu Jupi Tang):
Peucedani Radix (devoid of rhizome head), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Vetustum (steeped in hot water, devoid of white pith and dried, each 0.5 liang), Poria (devoid of black skin), Cinnamomi Ramulus (devoid of rough bark), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Asari Radix (devoid of seedlings and leaves), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (roasted, each 1 fen).

Place in a dingzi (small pot) and simmer slowly over low heat until the Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata turns yellow and forms an ointment. Remove the dregs and take out. Store in a porcelain vessel and let cool. Apply to the inside of the nose and massage the top of the head, three to five times daily.
