The above twenty-eight herbs are crushed, mixed with honey, and formed into pills. Take two pills the size of a loquat seed before meals, three times a day, adjusting dosage until efficacy is achieved. If ineffective, increase the dose. According to "Zhubing Yuanhou Lun," Ke Ni (cough with rebellious Qi) refers to cough accompanied by upward rebellion of Qi. Qi belongs to Yang, circulates through the Zang-Fu organs, and disseminates through the Cou Li (interstitial spaces). Qi is governed by the Lung.
Cough disease arises from Lung deficiency contracting mild cold. Cold condenses with Qi, preventing Qi from freely circulating in the Stomach; it rebels and gathers back in the Lung, causing Lung distension and failure of Qi to descend, thus termed Ke Ni. Symptoms include cough with chest fullness and rebellious Qi, shoulder and back pain, sweating, and pain in the buttocks, genitals, thighs, knees, and feet. Decoctions, moxibustion/ironing therapy, acupuncture, and stone therapy have separate specific formulas for nourishment and guidance, which are appended below. The "Yangsheng Fang · Daoyin Method" states: first inhale through the nose, then close the mouth and cough, then resume inhaling through the nose; the cough will heal. In the early morning, remove the pillow, lie flat on your back, extend arms and legs, close eyes and mouth, hold breath, inflate abdomen fully, press soles together, after a moment inhale, raise abdomen, clench fists tightly with feet, attempt to calm breathing slightly, then repeat. Spring: 3 times, Summer: 5 times, Autumn: 7 times, Winter: 9 times. This purges the Five Zang organs and moistens the Six Fu organs. Also stated: look back, look sideways, hold breath seven times. Treats Ke Ni chest pathology, alternating chills and fever. (Found in Volume 14.)
"Shen Shi Fang" treats cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, fever, chest oppression/fullness, and inability to eat. Formula: Wuzi Zi Tang (Schisandra Decoction).
Schisandrae Fructus (2 liang) Cinnamomi Ramulus Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (roasted) Asarum Radix et Rhizoma (each 1 liang) Dried Ginger (3 liang) Asther Sinensis Radix (2 liang; one version 1 liang) Jujubae Fructus (20 pieces, split) Ephedrae Herba (2 liang, nodes removed)
The above eight herbs are cut, boiled in 8 sheng of water to yield 3 sheng, divided into three doses. If Dried Ginger is unavailable, Fresh Ginger may be used. Avoid Conk seaweed, Chinese cabbage, raw vegetables, and raw green onion. (Found in Volume 18.)
"Thousand Golden Formulas" Zhupi Tang (Bamboo Bark Decoction) mainly treats Ke Ni with continuous hemoptysis.
Fresh Bamboo Bark (3 liang) Asther Sinensis Radix Yitang (Maltose, 1 jin) Rehmanniae Radix Recens (juice 1 sheng)
The above four herbs are cut, boiled in 6 sheng of water to yield 3 sheng, divided into three doses. Avoid Myrabolans. ("Shen Shi Fang" is identical.)
Also treats severe rebellious Qi ascending, throat discomfort, stopping rebellion and descending Qi. Main treatment: Maimendong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction).
Ophiopogonis Radix (2 sheng, core removed) Pinellia Rhizoma (1 sheng, washed) Ginseng Radix Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (each 2 liang, roasted) Oryza Sativa Germ (3 he) Jujubae Fructus (14 pieces)
The above six herbs are cut, boiled in 12 dou of water to yield 6 sheng. Take 0.5 sheng per dose, three times daily and once at night. Avoid mutton, maltose, Conk seaweed, and Chinese cabbage. (Originally from Zhang Zhongjing's "Shanghan Lun", also found in Volume 18.)
"Gujin Luyan Fang" treats Jue Ni (cold extremities/rebellious Qi), excess Zang Qi, cold-induced consumptive fatigue, worry-induced Qi, fright-induced Qi, palpitations, intermittent cold sensation in the chest, unpredictable symptoms, frequent sorrow, Qi flowing to limbs, lumps around the umbilicus, migratory swelling, and constipation. Formula: Youqi Tang (Wandering Qi Decoction).
Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (4 liang, roasted) Ginseng Radix Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (roasted) Ostreae Concha (each 2 liang, fried) Poria Sclerotium (4 liang) Cinnamomi Ramulus Pinellia Rhizoma (each 1 liang, washed) Gardeniae Fructus (4 pieces) Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (8 liang) Scutellariae Radix (3 liang)
The above ten herbs are cut, boiled in 9 sheng of water to yield 3.5 sheng. Strain, take 7 he per dose, three times daily and twice at night. If abdominal pain occurs, remove Scutellariae Radix and add Paeoniae Radix Alba (3 liang); this yields excellent results. Avoid Conk seaweed, Chinese cabbage, raw green onion, mutton, maltose, and vinegar products.
Also treats Ke Ni with ascending Qi Pills.
Dried Ginger (4 liang) Cinnamomi Ramulus Farfarae Flos (each 1 liang) Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (4 pieces, prepared) Schisandrae Fructus (2 liang) Croci Fructus (60 pieces; 30 pieces if old, peeled, core removed, fried)
The above six herbs: first crush the first five herbs and sieve them. Separately grind Croci Fructus into a paste, mix with the herb powder, and form pills the size of hemp seeds using honey. Place one pill on the teeth to chew, or take at bedtime. Take three times daily. Avoid raw green onion, pork, and asparagus.
Also Xiao Hujiao Wan (Small Pepper Pill) treats cold-induced Ke Ni, cold sensation in the chest, globus hystericus (feeling of a lump in the throat), inability to expectorate.
Piperis Longi Fructus (5 fen) Dried Ginger (6 fen) Farfarae Flos (3 fen)
The above three herbs are crushed and sieved, mixed with honey to form pills the size of loquat seeds. Take three pills with rice broth, twice daily, adjusting dosage until efficacy is achieved. Taboos are the same as above. (All found in Volume 19.)
