The *Yannian Milu* (Secret Records for Longevity) discusses: Ru (Zhongru, Stalactite), is Yin within Yang; Shi (Zhiyanshi, Purple Quartz and other mineral drugs), is Yang within Yin. Ru and Shi have always possessed the refined essence of Yin and Yang. Dwelling within the wrapping of extreme Yin, there lies Zhengyang (True Yang) hidden within it; within Zhengyang, it is again wrapped in extreme Yin. Therefore, one should take Ru after the Jiazi day in the eleventh month. One should take Shi after the Jiazi day in the fifth month. Through the emergence of Yin and Yang, they are taken mutually for use, regulating the interior without leaking to the exterior. Generally, human skin is deficient and carries wind-qi. When residing in the whole body and frequently undergoing the ingestion of minerals, if regulation follows proper methods, disaster will not arise; violating the timing, critical illness will arrive immediately. Privately reviewing ancient methods, all state that Shi is taken in the fourth month. This refers to superficial learning, not understanding the origin. According to inherited practices of taking Shi, everyone says that although the fourth month opens the season, it is not yet stable. The sixth month is considered the node of obtaining Qi, and other months follow this principle, but usually because it is not fully implemented. (Tong An: The five characters "sui kai er wei ping" [although opened but not yet flat/stable] are suspected to be missing.)
Old discussions state: Shennong and Tongjun deeply understood drug properties, so the mutual opposition and aversion among drugs are fully recorded in the *Bencao* (Materia Medica). However, regarding Dashī's master Dao Hong, on what basis did Dao Hong transmit his teachings?
If Zhongru interacts with Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), it causes headache and eye pain. If Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) interacts with Zhongru, it causes chest fullness and shortness of breath. If Haihe (Arca Shell) interacts with Ru, it causes eye pain and shortness of breath. Although the symptoms differ, the treatment principle is the same. If corresponding to the above conditions, quickly take Congbai Chi Tang (Scallion and Fermented Soybean Decoction), or treat later-onset attacks using Wushi Dasan (Five Minerals Great Powder). This is also not an ancient method; some say Zhongru and Baizhu mutually interact. Since the *Bencao* has no explicit text, scholars rely on arbitrary interpretation. Now, relying only on the syndromes of headache, eye pain, chest fullness, and shortness of breath, quickly take Congbai Chi Tang.
Congbai (Scallion White, cut, 1 jin, remove green parts) Xiangchi (Fermented Soybean, 3 sheng, wrapped in silk) Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, 1 sheng) Gancao (Licorice Root, 3 liang, roasted and cut)
Take the above four ingredients, add 1 dan 5 sheng of water, first boil Congbai, clarify to obtain 8 sheng of liquid, add other medicines, boil to obtain 3 sheng, divide into three doses. After finishing the dose, have someone massage and shake the body, chew food in the mouth, then lie supine, cover with warm clothing until sweating occurs. Remove clothes and decoction, once heat subsides, one may eat cold noodles, sauce, dried meat, etc., at will. (*Qianjin Fang* uses half a jin of Congbai, 2 sheng of Chi, 3 liang each of Gancao and Renshen, without Wuzhuyu. If this does not resolve the condition, take Gancao Tang again.)
Gancao (Licorice Root, 3 liang, roasted) Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, 2 liang) Chi (Fermented Soybean, 2 sheng) Congbai (Scallion White, half a jin)
Combine the above four ingredients and take as previously described. If resolved by this, but residual pathogenic heat remains in the Lung system, take Guixin Tang again.
Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart) Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed, 3 liang each) Renshen (Ginseng Root) Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang each, roasted) Congbai (Scallion White, half a liang) Chi (Fermented Soybean, 2 sheng)
Combine the above six ingredients and take as previously described. (From *Qianjin Fang*)
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) interact with Huanglian (Sulfur), causing irritability and heat, leg pain, and lower back pain, sometimes uncontrolled anger, sometimes uncontrollable diarrhea. Fangfeng and Xixin can activate Huanglian, but Huanglian cannot activate them. Upon feeling the onset, take Duzhong Tang immediately.
Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex, 3 liang) Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, roasted) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, 14 kernels) Liheren (Prunus Persica Kernel, peeled, 2 liang each) Chi (Fermented Soybean, 2 sheng)
Combine the above six ingredients and take as previously described. If unresolved, take Damainu Tang again.
Damainu (Hordei Fructus Germinatus, 4 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) Renshen (Ginseng Root) Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, 1 liang each) Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed, half a jin)
Combine the above six ingredients and take as previously described. If resolved by this, but residual heat or cold remains in the Spleen and Kidney systems, take Renshen Tang again.
Renshen (Ginseng Root) Jiangjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang each) Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1 piece, processed)
Combine the above five ingredients and take as previously described. (From *Qianjin Fang*)
Fuzi and Baiyuanshi (Quartzum Album) touch each other mutually. If Baiyuanshi acts first, it causes irritability, abdominal distension, and fullness. If Fuzi acts first, it causes vomiting, inability to eat, jaw lock, difficulty speaking, and soreness/pain in hands and feet. Upon initial onset, take Sheng Maidong Tang.
Sheng Maidong (Fresh Ophiopogonis Radix, 4 liang, heart removed) Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang, roasted) Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 2 liang, nodes removed) Chi (Fermented Soybean, 2 sheng)
Cut the above four ingredients. First, boil Mahuang in 1 dan of water, skim off the foam, add other medicines, boil to obtain 3 sheng, divide into three doses. After taking, if massaging, lying down, and covering induces sweat, wait for the medicinal qi to dissipate, then eat warm rice, sauce, vegetables, and dried meat at will. If heat persists, take Dahuang Tang again.
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang, soaked separately) Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang, roasted) Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, 29 pieces, split) Chi (Fermented Soybean, 2 sheng)
Cut the above four ingredients. Boil Gancao and Zhizi in 9 sheng of water to obtain 2.5 sheng, then add Dahuang, boil for three to four boils, strain, divide into three doses. Stop if bowel movement occurs; otherwise, finish the dose. Another method: if irritable and hot, add Xixin 1 liang. If heat persists, accompanied by high gaze and thirst, take Gualou Tang again.
Sheng Gualou (Trichosanthis Radix, fresh) Damainu (Hordei Fructus Germinatus, 4 liang each) Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang, roasted) Congbai (Scallion White, half a jin) Chi (Fermented Soybean, 2 sheng)
Combine the above five ingredients and take as previously described, slightly reducing the dosage to combine. Obtain approximately 1 sheng. Then eat a small amount of thin porridge. If the moving heat has resolved but residual heat remains in the stomach, take Mangxiao Tang again.
Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, 2 liang each) Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, 3 liang each) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang) Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 20 pieces, split) Liheren (Prunus Persica Kernel, 21 pieces, peeled)
Combine the above seven ingredients and take as previously described. If abdominal distension occurs, remove Mangxiao and add Renshen 2 liang. (From *Qianjin Fang*)
Renshen interacts with Zhiyanshi (Quartzum Rubrum), causing urgent heart pain, palpitations, insomnia, confusion, forgetfulness, madness, drowsiness, irritability, fluctuating severity, alternating chills and fever, deafness, and dim vision. Furthermore, although Fangfeng does not activate Zhiyanshi, Zhiyanshi activates Fangfeng. Because the formula contains Renshen, and Fangfeng activates Renshen, they mutually trigger activation, causing heart pain, irritability, heat, and stiffness of the head and neck. Upon initial onset, take Mahuang Tang. (*Qianjin Fang* mentions taking Renshen Tang afterwards.)
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 2 liang, nodes removed) Renshen (Ginseng Root, 1 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang, roasted) Congbai (Scallion White, cut, 1 sheng) Chi (Fermented Soybean, 1 sheng) Damainu (Hordei Fructus Germinatus, one handful)
Cut the above six ingredients. Boil in 5 sheng of wine and 3 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng, divide into three doses for good effect.
Another method for resolving the effects of taking Renshen Tang:
Renshen (Ginseng Root, 3 liang) Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, roasted) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 liang) Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, 2 liang) Chi (Fermented Soybean, 3 sheng)
Take the above five ingredients, boil in 1 dan of water to obtain 3 sheng, strain, divide into three doses. If pathogenic factors are strong, add Dahuang, Huangqin, and Zhizi, 3 liang each. (From *Qianjin Fang*, which includes Gancao 2 liang)
If confusion and madness persist, take Maidong Tang. (See below under Shi Fa)
If there is residual heat in the heart, take Renshen Tang again.
Renshen (Ginseng Root) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, 3 liang each) Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, 2 liang) Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, cut) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang each)
Combine the above six ingredients and take as previously described. (From *Qianjin Fang*)
Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) interacts with Chishizhi (Halloysitum Rubrum), causing heart pain, cold rigors, cold extremities, and mental restlessness. Chishizhi activates Jiegeng, causing headache, red eyes, and severe fever. Upon initial onset, drink warm clear wine; as the alcohol spreads, relief comes. Alternatively, take Damai Fang.
Damai (Hordeum Vulgare) is stir-fried until sweat appears, dried, not burnt too much, pounded to remove husks, finely ground and sifted. Mix with cold water and take; adding honey is also good. (*Qianjin Yi Fang* says stir-fry, remove husk, steam until cooked, dry, fragrant, pound and sift)
Shi (Mineral drugs) has no specific counter-agent. Onset causes urgent heart condition, jaw lock, joint pain and stiffness, or sores forming between joints. Overeating triggers severe fever. Wash with cold water, then pour 5-6 shi of raw and cooked soup over the body. Eat small amounts of warm food, drink small amounts of hot wine, walk to induce exertion, then take Maidong Tang.
Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, half a jin, heart removed) Chi (Fermented Soybean, 2 sheng) Congbai (Scallion White, half a jin, cut)
Take the above three ingredients, boil in 7 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng, divide into three doses, cover with warm clothing. Sweating leads to recovery. Another method adds Gancao 3 liang and Renshen 1.5 liang. *Qianjin Fang* also includes Guixin 2 liang, stating that upon initial onset, take Congbai Chi Tang using Congbai half a jin, Chi 2 sheng, and Gancao 2 liang (roasted), these three ingredients...
