The etiology of the five types of Dian (epilepsy/mental disorder): The first is called Yang Dian. During an attack, the patient appears like a corpse, experiences incontinence, and recovers after a while. The second is called Yin Dian; prolonged sitting may lead to unhealed umbilical ulcers, requiring frequent bathing. The third [implied] is contracted from excessive sexual intercourse and washing the head while sweating, causing brain heat that does not subside. The fourth is called Ma Dian (Horse Epilepsy). During an attack, the eyes roll back, the jaw is clenched, the limbs are drawn together in convulsion, and the body becomes hot. It is contracted when sitting for too long, causing disharmony between fatty vapors and brain heat. All these conditions manifest similarly. Pulse diagnosis: A faint and choppy pulse at the Heart position indicates Dian disease; a tight and rapid pulse at the Spleen position is also a Dian pulse; an extremely urgent pulse at the Kidney position indicates Bone Dian disease; a large and surging pulse... [text missing] ...spitting saliva and foam... [text missing] ...deep, fine, and small pulse... [text missing].
"Gujin Luyan" Scopolia Seed Powder treats the five types of Dian. Symptoms include body twisting, bleating like a sheep, eyes rolling back, spitting foam, and insensitivity to pain. Prescription:
Pig Testis (one piece, dried in shade for one hundred days) Scopoliae Fructus (Liangdangzi, 3 sheng) Bovis Calculus (Niuhuang, 8 fen, ground) Cyprini Carassii Vesica (Liyudan, 5 fen) Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, 10 fen, ground)
Cut the above five herbs. Soak Scopoliae Fructus in one sheng of clear wine until the wine is completely absorbed by drying in the sun. Then pound and mix, passing through a sieve. Take half a 'bi' (a spoonful measure) with wine, twice daily. The patient should feel intoxicated; if no effect is felt, slightly increase the dose. Stop when the desired effect is achieved. Avoid raw green onions, etc.
There is also Iron Essence Powder for treating the five types of Dian.
Ferri Massae Pulvis (Tiejing, 1 he, ground) Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) (each 1 liang) Cnidii Fructus (Shechuangzi, 5 he)
Pound and sieve the above four herbs together. Take one 'qian bi' with wine, three times daily. Effective. (Wen Zhong and Fan Wang record the same.)
Another prescription for the five types of Dian: Niu Dian (Ovina Epilepsy) produces bellowing sounds; Ma Dian produces neighing sounds; Gou Dian (Canine Epilepsy) produces barking sounds; Yang Dian produces bleating sounds; Ji Dian (Gallinae Epilepsy) produces crowing sounds. Patients with the five types of Dian experience mutual traction among the Zang-Fu organs, rising rebellious Qi leading to cold reversal (Jue), loss of consciousness, Qi contention causing convulsions and spitting foam, recovering only after a long time. Xionghuang Pill Prescription:
Minii Oxidum Rubrum (Qiandan, 2 liang, roasted into powder) Margarita (Zhenzhu) Realgar (Xionghuang, ground) Hydrargyrum (Shuiyin, roasted) Orpiment (Cihuang, absent in some versions, each 1 liang) Cinnabaris (Dansha, 0.5 liang, ground)
Pound the above six ingredients together with honey, then pound thirty thousand times. Form into pills. Take three pills the size of a broad bean before meals, twice daily. Also effective for Jing Xian (startle epilepsy). Avoid raw blood products. (Qianjin Fang and Fan Wang Fang agree, stating each ingredient is 5 liang, children take three pills the size of a small bean, both cited from Volume Six.)
