Source of Disease: This refers to the condition where, after undergoing purgation therapy, there is no bowel movement for six or seven days, accompanied by irritability and heat that does not resolve, abdominal fullness, and pain. This is because there are dry feces in the stomach mixed with retained food. Alternatively, if one previously suffered from Hanpi (cold-type accumulation), had retained food, and then contracted Shanghan (Cold Damage), the pathogenic heat clashes with the retained food, causing the food to fail to digest. (From Volume VIII)
Shen Shi Fang Kuachi Wan: Treats Shanghan with lingering fluid retention (Liu Yin), and indigestion of retained food. Also known as Xuming Wan.
Huangqin (Coptidis Rhizoma / Scutellariae Radix) five liang; Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) five liang; Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus) sixteen seeds; Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) five liang, remove hairs; Chi Dou (Fermented Soybean) one sheng, roasted; Gansui (Kansui Radix) three liang (from Mount Tai is preferred); Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) five liang, remove joints; Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) two liang; Badou (Crotonis Fructus) one hundred seeds, remove skin and heart, roast and grind.
Grind the above nine ingredients into powder, mix with white honey to form pills the size of wu zi (cibotium seeds). Take three pills initially; adjust dosage based on whether vomiting or diarrhea occurs. If neither occurs, add two more pills. Another version includes seventy xing ren (Pruni Semen). Avoid pork, cold water, lu sun (Asparagus cochinchinensis), and meat. (From Volume XIV, same as Fan Wang's record)
Gu Jin Lu Yan Xuming Wan: A formula for treating Shanghan, Pishi (accumulation due to cold and qi stagnation), phlegm-fluid, and various other diseases.
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) five liang; Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) one liang; Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) five liang, remove joints; Gansui (Kansui Radix) three liang, roasted; Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) two liang; Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) two liang, ground; Xing Ren (Pruni Semen) seventy seeds, remove skin and tips, roasted; Badou (Crotonis Fructus) one hundred seeds, remove heart, roast and grind; Chi Dou (Fermented Soybean) one sheng, roasted.
Grind the above nine ingredients into powder, mix with honey to form pills. For Shanghan on the first day, take one pill, size of a wu zi; on the second day, two pills; by the sixth or seventh day, six or seven pills. Recovery is achieved through vomiting, diarrhea, and sweating. For conditions involving fluid retention and phlegm-solidity, take three to five pills, twice daily. Avoid pork, cold water, and lu sun. (Same as Fan Wang's Yannian abridged version, from Volume III)
Source of Disease: This is caused by pathogenic heat lodging in the Lung. When there is heat in the Upper Jiao, the person will desire to drink water. If water stops in the epigastrium (heart below), it causes the Lung Qi to float upward. Since the Lung governs coughing, when water-Qi attacks it, coughing ensues. (From Volume VIII)
Duan Ju Fang Shegan Tang: Mainly treats Shanghan in spring and winter, and coughing due to cold contraction in autumn and summer. Symptoms include curling up, difficulty breathing, throat rattling, hoarseness, loss of voice, dry cough without sputum, and a sensation of obstruction in the throat.
Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma) two liang; Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) five liang, washed; Xing Ren (Pruni Semen) two liang, remove skin and tips, double-kernel ones allowed; Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) two liang, processed; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) two liang, honey-fried; Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix) two liang, remove joints; Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) two liang.
Cut the above twelve ingredients. Boil in ten dou of water until reduced to three sheng. Remove dregs. Take warm, divided into three doses. For illness of one or two days' duration, this decoction can be taken. After sweating, do not induce further sweating. For chronic cases, initially add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) two liang. In early autumn/summer during heavy rain and cold, or when epidemic cold causes heat to lie hidden internally, use fresh Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) four liang instead of Ganjiang, remove Zhuyu (Euodiae Fructus), and use Zhi Shizhi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus Preparatus) two liang. Avoid mutton, Haizao (Sargassum), Songcai (Brassica pekinensis), Yi (Malt Sugar), and raw Cong (Allium fistulosum). (From Volume VI)
Gu Jin Lu Yan Xiaqi Jupi Tang: Treats coughing due to Shanghan in spring/winter and cold-dampness in autumn/summer, characterized by rattling in the throat, rebellious Qi failing to descend, and headache.

Cut the above eight ingredients. Boil in seven sheng of water until reduced to three sheng. Divide into three doses. If not cured, re-boil and take again. Avoid Haizao (Sargassum), Songcai (Brassica pekinensis), and raw Cong (Allium fistulosum). (From Volume III)
Yannian Fang Zhimu Tang for Treating Shanghan with Bone and Joint Pain, Headache, Eye Pain, and Cough:
