(Written by the Daoist of Longshang, secular surname Xie, residing in Qizhou, transmitted from a Hu monk from the Western Regions)
It is heard that among the principles of Heaven and Earth, humans are the most precious. Among the important parts of the body, the eyes are the most treasured. Because of their associated functions, they are exquisitely miraculous and connect with the divine. Regarding the six sense organs (eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind), the eye is considered the highest. Therefore, prescriptions for treating eye diseases should not be treated lightly.
The Daoist Xie said: The eye is the master of the six spirits (referring to the主宰 of spiritual consciousness); the body is formed by the Four Elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Wind). Earth, water, fire, wind, as well as Yin, Yang, Qi, and climate, together constitute the eight-foot human body.
Regarding the increase of the "Fire Element," it is called... [Text missing/corrupted here, referring to pathology caused by excess Fire]. To say that there is a pearl-like structure in the eye, comparing it to a fish being boiled, this statement is incorrect. All animals living in water or on land that have eyes consist essentially of water; there is no separate "pearl." It is only when boiled by hot water or fire that the water coagulates and transforms into something resembling a pearl. Just look at a live fish before it is cooked or roasted; where is the meaning of a pearl? If a dead fish is left aside, the water in its eyes has already condensed and thickened. However, regarding a live fish, the water within is light and fluid.
The Daoist Xie said: In the human eye, the white part (Sclera) has three layers. Even if slightly touched, it will not cause serious damage. But the black part (Cornea) and the water membrane consist of only one layer. They must not be touched lightly, otherwise, they may be ruined in an instant. This requires deep caution. Ordinary people do not investigate thoroughly and erroneously rely on theories of multiple layers, claiming seven or five layers. These are all false statements, merely the opinions of one school. However, injuries to the eye vary according to the cause of illness: some are due to Cold, some due to Heat. Both can cause damage, eventually leading to blindness and lack of clarity, presenting with cyan-white opacities, and frequent visual disturbances in front of the eyes... [Text garbled/missing], one should take Da... [Prescription name missing].
The Daoist Xie said: Suffering from those who gradually develop membranes in the eyes, similar in appearance to the previously mentioned "Qingmang" (Green Blindness/Cataract), but appearing empty inside the eye, this is named "Heimang" (Black Blindness). Acupuncture and medication are suitable. If the pupil is enlarged, it is named "Wufeng" (Black Wind); if there is a green opacity over the pupil, it is named "Lvyi Qingmang" (Green Opacity Green Blindness). These are all caused by deficient Wind. One should perceive this and immediately... [Verb missing, implying treatment].
The opacity dissipates... [Text incomplete]. This is caused by Wind-Heat. Decoctions and pills are suitable, or they can be removed via hook-and-scuttle surgery. If the eyes are red, itchy, and tearing, this is due to Heat and deficient Wind. Powders and decoctions should be taken to eliminate it. If one sees black smoke... [Symptom description interrupted], as well as white opacities, accompanied by black spots of various sizes... [Pathological product description interrupted], if these are opacities and scars caused by impact from objects, they cannot be cured, nor is it worth wasting effort on them. (Tong An: Lao Shui...)
