According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases): Xin Han (Heart Hernia) is caused by the accumulation of Yin-cold Qi inside the body, where cold Qi fails to dissipate and rushes upward to the heart, causing heart pain; this is termed Xin Han. The pain may feel like being pierced by an awl or knife, or be accompanied by cold extremities, or cyanosis of the lips and mouth; these are all its manifestations. (From Volume 20)

*Fan Wang Fang* (Formulas of Fan Wang) for treating recurrent Xin Han with periumbilical pain radiating upward to support the hypochondrium and pain below the heart:
Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Jie Geng (Radix Platycodonis), Xi Xin (Herba Asari), Shu Jiao (Fructus Zanthoxyli, processed to induce sweating), Gui Xin (Cortex Cinnamomi), Gan Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, dried; each 3 fen), Fu Zi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, 1 fen, processed).
The above seven herbs are powdered, mixed with honey, and formed into pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take 7 pills at a time, washed down with wine, twice daily. Avoid pork, cold water, raw green onions, and raw vegetables.

Another divine formula for treating thirty-year Xin Han:
She Wang (Aconitum carmichaelii root poison, high quality is preferred), Zhu Yu (Fructus Corni, fresh and good quality, also known as Sha Zi).
The above two ingredients in equal parts are crushed, sifted, and mixed with honey to form pills. Take two pills the size of a sesame seed, three times daily. After the medicinal effect subsides, consuming hot food is beneficial; patients who have used it have recovered. (Secretly transmitted by Liu Guoying)

Another formula for Xin Han:
Moxibustion on both big toe nail corners near the Yin position and Jia-Yin position, half moxa cone each, with the number of cones based on the patient's age, which is effective. (Commentary: "Yin" here should be a typo for "Rou" [flesh]).

Another formula for when Xin Han attacks, causing severe heart and abdominal pain nearly fatal:
Moxibustion on the sole of the foot (Yongquan), on the transverse crease behind the big toe nail, and at the junction of white and black flesh between the big toe cleft, totaling 100 cones to stop. The "sole of the foot" refers to the area under the foot, close to the proximal interphalangeal joint of the big toe, not the exact center of the sole. (All from Volume 18. Commentary: The sole of the foot near the proximal joint of the big toe is the Yongquan acupoint).

*Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states: Tan Yin (Phlegm-Fluids) occurs due to blocked Qi meridians and unflowing Jin Ye (Body Fluids); water-fluid Qi stagnates in the chest and fu-organs, condensing into phlegm. Also, some people who were formerly obese now become thin, with water flowing through the intestines making a sloshing sound; this is called Tan Yin. Its diseases include: distension and fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, indigestion of water and grain, accumulation in the abdomen, sounds of water moving in the stomach and intestines between the ribs, heavy body, excessive salivation, shortness of breath, somnolence, and severe chest and back pain leading to rebellious Qi, coughing, orthopnea, shortness of breath preventing lying flat, and edema-like appearance. This is Tan Yin. A pulse that is exclusively wiry indicates Yin; floating and slippery also indicate Yin. Regarding decoction compresses, acupuncture, and stone therapy, there are separate specific formulas. Tonification, nourishment, and guidance methods are attached below. The Health Preservation Formulas' Guidance Method says: Lie on left or right side, hold breath twelve times, to treat unresolved Tan Yin; if Yin disease is on the right, lie on the right; if on the left, lie on the left; if still unresolved, press/rub away the Qi, twelve breaths each side.
(From Volume 20)

*Qian Jin Fang* Discussion on Tan Yin: Question: There are four types of Yin (Fluid Retention). What are they? Master said: There is Tan Yin (also called Liu Yin/Stagnant Yin), Xuan Yin (Hanging Yin), Yi Yin (Overflowing Yin), and Zhi Yin (Branching Yin).
Question: How do the symptoms of the four Yins differ? Master said: When a person was formerly obese but is now thin, with water flowing through the intestines making a gurgling sound, it is called Tan Yin; when fluid remains in the hypochondrium after drinking, causing pain upon coughing and spitting, it is called Xuan Yin; when excessive drinking leads to fluid accumulating in the four limbs, sweating should occur but does not, resulting in heavy and painful body, it is called Yi Yin; when a person has coughing, rebellious Qi, orthopnea, shortness of breath preventing lying flat, and edema-like appearance, it is called Zhi Yin. Whenever there is water below the heart, there is palpitation, shortness of breath, and fear. If dizziness and mania precede, it is deficiency; if heat precedes, it is excess. Thus, water in the Heart causes hardness below the heart, palpitations, shortness of breath, aversion to water and lack of desire to drink; water in the Lung causes spitting of saliva and mucus and desire to drink; water in the Spleen causes shortness of Qi and heaviness of the whole body; water in the Liver causes distension and fullness in the hypochondrium and pain upon sneezing; water in the Kidney causes palpitations below the heart. If a patient suddenly drinks much water, sudden asthma and fullness must occur. Generally, eating little and drinking much causes water to stop below the heart; severely, palpitation occurs; mildly, shortness of breath occurs. A double wiry pulse indicates Cold, usually occurring after severe purgation leading to deficiency; an exclusively wiry pulse indicates Yin. Lung Yin is not wiry, but prefers asthma and shortness of breath; Zhi Yin also causes asthma and inability to sleep, plus shortness of breath, with a normal pulse. Liu Yin does not manifest externally, has no heat, pulse is fine, with vexation, fullness, and inability to eat; a deep and slippery pulse indicates Liu Yin disease. In cases of Liu Yin, pain in the hypochondrium radiates to the Clavicular Fossa (Que Pan), worsening with coughing; the patient cannot lie flat due to coughing, with pain radiating to the neck, and the cough resembles the jerking motion of a child. If there is Liu Yin in the Chest, the patient has shortness of breath and thirst; if in the Heart (Epigastrium), the back feels cold over an area the size of a hand; if the patient's breathing pulls upward from the chest, these all relate to Yi Yin. Long-standing issues in the chest lead to fullness in the Clavicular Fossa and Scrofula (Ma Dao) swelling with intermittent severity, caused by Qi and Yin. Diseases above the Diaphragm involve fullness, asthma, coughing, and vomiting; upon onset, there are alternating chills and fever, back pain, aversion to cold, and tearing; if the body trembles violently, there must be Fu Yin (Hidden Yin). If one arm moves irregularly and then shifts to the other, with a deep and fine pulse, this is not Wind, but Yin in the Upper Jiao; a deficient pulse indicates slight labor, due to incomplete circulation of Ying and Wei Qi. (From Volume 18. Commentary: "Xing bu fa zuo" means no external signs of disease.)
