According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases): Heat in the Spleen and Stomach causes grain qi to stagnate and steam; combined with the invasion of heat-toxin, sudden jaundice occurs. This is accompanied by chest fullness and panting, with life hanging in the balance, hence it is called "Ji Huang" (Acute Jaundice). Some patients exhibit yellowing of the body and face immediately upon illness onset, while others are unaware they have jaundice until after death when their body and face turn yellow. If the symptoms include fever and palpitations/trembling of the heart upon onset, it is classified as Ji Huang. (All cited from Volume 12)
*Guangji Fang* (Formulas from Guangji Hospital) treats Ji Huang where the body appears golden-yellow. Gua Di San (Melon Peduncle Powder) Formula:
Chi Xiao Dou (Red Bean, *Phaseoli Semen Rubrum*) (14 seeds) Ding Xiang (Clove, *Caryophylli Flos*) (14 seeds) Shu Mi (Millet, *Panicum miliaceum semen*) (14 seeds) Gua Di (Melon Peduncle, *Momordicae Fructus*) (14 seeds) She Xiang (Musk, *Moschus*) Ru Xiang (Frankincense, *Boswelliae Resina*) (equal parts, separately ground) Qing Bu (Blue Cloth, burnt to ash) (two pieces, one square cun each)
The above seven ingredients are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Administer one qian bi (a small measuring spoon) dose with warm water; this will induce the discharge of yellow fluid, and the jaundice will subside. Avoid raw/cold foods, hot noodles, sticky foods, and stale/putrid foods. (Another version contains only three ingredients, cited from Volume 1)
*Bi Xiao Fang* (Effective Formulas) treats Ji Huang and yellowing due to gallbladder issues. Da Huang Tang (Rhubarb Decoction) Formula:
Da Huang (Rhubarb Root, *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma*) (3 liang, sliced) Mang Xiao (Mirabilite, *Natrii Sulfas*) (2 liang)
Take the above two ingredients, add 2 sheng of water, soak the Da Huang raw overnight. In the early morning, squeeze out 1.5 sheng of juice, add Mang Xiao, stir, and administer. Soon, there should be a rapid bowel movement, leading to recovery. (Cited from Volume 1)
*Yan Nian Mi Lu* (Secret Records for Longevity) treats Ji Huang characterized by hardness below the heart, thirst with desire to drink, coarse and rapid breathing, and yellow eyes. If any single symptom matches, this Gua Di San should be administered; vomiting indicates recovery.
Gua Di (Melon Peduncle, *Momordicae Fructus*) (2 small he) Chi Xiao Dou (Red Bean, *Phaseoli Semen Rubrum*) (2 he)
The above two ingredients are crushed and sifted into a powder. For adults, mix one dose (approximately one fang cun bi) with 5 small he of warm Jiang Shui (fermented rice water). After about the time it takes to cook a meal, if vomiting occurs, the condition improves. If no vomiting occurs, administer another 0.5 fang cun bi dose, reducing the amount of Jiang Shui accordingly. For mild cases, blow the powder directly into the nose; an amount equivalent to two black soybean grains is sufficient. When yellow fluid discharges from the nose, stop administration. Additionally, moxibustion is suitable at Ju Que (CV14), located one cun below the xiphoid process. Moxa cones of 5-7 units are recommended. Start with small cones and gradually increase size, but not larger than a Chinese walnut seed.
After vomiting and moxibustion, if thirst persists, administer Mai Men Dong Yin Zi (Ophiopogon Drink) Formula:
Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber, *Ophiopogonis Tuber*) (4 liang, heart removed) Gua Lou (Trichosanthes Fruit, *Trichosanthis Fructus*) (3 liang) Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaf, *Phyllostachys nigra folium*) (1 sheng) Fu Ling (Poria, *Polyporus*) (4 liang) Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome, *Cimicifugae Rhizoma*) (2 liang) Sheng Lu Gen (Reed Rhizome, *Phragmitis Rhizoma*) (1 sheng) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*) (1 liang, honey-fried)
The above seven ingredients are sliced, boiled in 7 sheng of water to reduce to 2.5 sheng, strained to remove dregs, and divided into three warm doses. The interval between doses should be approximately the time it takes a person to walk 8-9 li. Thirst will cease after taking this drink. (Cited from Volume 10)
*Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats Ji Huang with bone-steaming heat and red veins in both eyes. Di Huang Zhi Tang (Rehmannia Juice Decoction) Formula:
Sheng Di Huang Zhi (Fresh Rehmannia Juice, *Rehmanniae Radix Recens Sucus*) (8 he) Da Huang (Rhubarb Root, *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma*) (6 fen, powdered) Mang Xiao (Mirabilite, *Natrii Sulfas*) (1 liang)
Mix the above three ingredients. Take 5 he per dose, twice daily. Stop when bowel movements become loose/unobstructed.
*Jin Xiao Fang* (Near-Efficacy Formulas) for treating Ji Huang:
Take one zhan of Man Jing Zi You (Vitex Fruit Oil) and take it in one dose. If oil is unavailable temporarily, crush Man Jing Zi (Chaste Tree Fruit, *Viticis Fructus*), extract the juice, mix with water, and drink. When the complexion turns yellow or mental state becomes agitated/rushed, it indicates this disease. (Tested successfully by Official Wei Ge Shi)
