The *Shanfan Lun* (Treatise on Eliminating Redundancy) states: In cases of Jing Ji (Exhaustion of Essence), the pathological manifestations involve all five Zang and six Fu organs. If the functions of the five Zang and six Fu organs decline, the physical form becomes extremely exhausted; vision is blurred; teeth become dry and brittle, and hair falls out; the body feels heavy due to Kidney Water overflowing (edema); deafness occurs; and gait is unsteady. Pathogenic wind reverses in the six Fu organs, and deficient pathogenic factors cause Jue (reversal/collapse) in the five Zang organs. Therefore, it is called Jing Ji.
Diseases are categorized into Excess (Shi) and Deficiency (Xu). Deficient and reversed conditions affect the five Zang organs. If... as the will first... knowing those situations.
*Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats Excess-Heat type Jing Ji, characterized by blurred vision, dry/brittle teeth, hair loss, physical emaciation, body pain, and generalized deficiency heat. The formula is Zhuye Huangqin Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Scutellaria Decoction):
Zhuye (Cut Bamboo Leaf, 3 Sheng cut) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) Fuling (Poria) [each 3 Liang] Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 6 Liang) Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted)
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) [each 2 Liang] Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, 4 Liang) Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, 1 Sheng cut)
Chop the above nine ingredients. Add 9 Sheng of water, decoct to obtain 3 Sheng. Remove the dregs. Divide into three doses. Avoid vinegar, Haizao (Sargassum), Songcai (Chinese Cabbage), and Wuyi (Coriander). (Same as *Shanfan*).
Another prescription for Jing Ji, where all five Zang and six Fu organs are damaged, presenting with generalized deficiency heat, vexation, pain, and bone-deep pain/vexation:
Shengdihuang (Juice of Rehmanniae Radix, 2 Sheng) Sheng Maimendong (Juice of Ophiopogonis Radix) Chi Mi (Red Honey) Zhuli (Bamboo Juice) [each 1 Sheng] Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 8 Liang crushed) Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 3 Liang)
Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 3 Liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, 1 Liang) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 Liang) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 4 Liang) Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 4 Liang) Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, de-stemmed, 2 Liang)
Chop the above twelve ingredients. Add 7 Sheng of water. First decoct the first eight ingredients to obtain 2 Sheng. Remove the dregs. Add the juices of Shengdihuang etc., and decoct again to obtain 4 Sheng. Divide into four doses. Take three times during the day and once at night. Avoid Haizao, Songcai, raw Cong (Scallion), and Wuyi. (Guixin 3 Liang in *Shanfan*, same as *Shanfan*; both from Volume 19).
*Bingyuan* (Source of Diseases) states: When Kidney Qi is deficient and impaired, it cannot store essence, leading to leakage of essence. Symptoms include tension and urgency in the lower abdomen, coldness at the glans penis, pain in the eye sockets, and hair loss. Palpating a rapid and scattered pulse indicates the pulse pattern of lost essence. Generally, a Kou (cunni) moving, faint, and tight pulse in men indicates lost essence. (From Volume 4).
*Shenshi Fang* (Deep Master's Prescriptions) Renshen Wan (Ginseng Pill) treats Xu Lao (Consumptive Disease) with lost essence:
Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 2 Liang) Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) Liumoli (Ostreae Concha, calcined) Shuyu (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed) Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) [each 3 Fen] Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 5 Fen) Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) Gany Dihuang (Dry Rehmanniae Radix) [each 4 Fen] Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen, 2 Fen)
Pulverize and mix the above thirteen ingredients, passing through a sieve. Blend with white honey to form pills. Administer with wine, size of Wuzi (Wu-tzu seeds/loquat seeds), three pills per dose. For Bi syndrome (obstruction/pain), add 1 Fen of processed Fuzi. For women with blood flooding (metrorrhagia), add 2 Fen of high-quality Gany Dihuang. Another version states Huangbai 4 Fen. Avoid pork, cold water, raw Cong, raw vegetables, and Wuyi. (From Volume 3).
Fan Wang treats male deficiency-type lost essence with Sanwu Tianxiong San (Three-Ingredient Tianxiong Powder):
Tianxiong (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix, 3 Liang, processed) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 8 Fen) Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 6 Fen)
Pulverize the above herbs and pass through a sieve. Administer half a Qianbi (coin-sized measure). Three times daily, gradually increasing the dose. Avoid pork, cold water, peaches, plums, sparrow meat, and raw Cong. (Zhang Zhongjing's formula includes Longgu; Wen Zhong is the same; from Volume 68).
*Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) moxibustion method for male Xu Lao with lost essence causing Yin retraction:
Moxa Zhongfeng (KI9) 50 Zhu (moxa cones).
Another case of male Xu Lao with lost essence, penile retraction, and pain in the urethra:
Moxa Dahe (KI12) 30 Zhu. The acupoint is located 3 Cun from the end of the flexed bone. (Both from Volume 19).
(The dimensions and distances of the above moxa points are detailed in Volume 39).
*Gujin Luyan* (Ancient and Modern Verified Records) treats deficiency loss of essence with Huangqi Tang (Astragalus Decoction):
Huangqi (Astragali Radix) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, each 2 Liang) Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 6 Liang) Congrong (Cynomorii Herba) Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis) [each 3 Liang] Ganzao (Jujubae Fructus, 130 pieces) Baimi (White Honey, 2 Sheng)
Chop the above eight ingredients. Add 1 Dou of water, decoct to obtain 4 Sheng. Add honey, simmer to obtain 3 Sheng. Divide into four doses. Take three times during the day and once at night, alternating with meals. Avoid Haizao, Songcai, and raw Cong. (Same as Fan Wang; from Volume 3).
