Etiology of Huoluan (Cholera-like disease) with restlessness and thirst: This condition arises from severe vomiting, leading to deficiency in the Upper Jiao (upper burner/chest and diaphragm area) and dysfunction of Qi dynamics. Pathogenic Qi invades the Heart, causing mental restlessness and oppression. Severe diarrhea depletes Body Fluids; depletion of Body Fluids leads to dryness of the Zang organs; dryness of the Zang organs results in thirst. If restlessness and thirst persist, the patient will drink excessively, which in turn prevents the diarrhea from stopping. (From Volume 22)
*Zhouhou Fang* (Prescriptions for Emergency Use) treats death caused by excessive drinking due to extreme thirst following vomiting and diarrhea in Huoluan.
Recipe:
Huangliang Rice (Setaria italica grain) 5 sheng, water 1 dou. Boil until three sheng of liquid remains. Clarify the liquid and administer small amounts frequently. Do not allow the patient to drink the remaining large volume at once. (Note: *Beiji Qianjin Yaofang* states that Glutinous Rice (Oryza sativa var. glutinosa) yields similar results. From Volume 2)
*Beiji Qianjin Yaofang* and *Jin Xiao Fang* treat Huoluan without vomiting or diarrhea, characterized by food stagnation, rapid breathing, and thirst.
Recipe:
One Quince (Chaenomeles speciosa), sliced. Boil in four sheng of water until two sheng remain. Drink slowly and completely, then prepare a new batch. It is effective even if vomiting persists. For thirst alone, this decoction is best. The roots and stems may also be used. Note: This decoction induces vomiting. (Same as prescriptions by Cui Shi and Zhang Wenzhong. From Volume 1)
*Bi Xiao Fang* treats thirst in Huoluan.
Recipe:
Glutinous Rice (Oryza sativa var. glutinosa) 2 sheng. The starchy water obtained from washing the rice can settle the condition. If there is no thirst, it is unnecessary. Another variation suggests administering this when thirsty, ensuring the patient eats their fill. Alternatively, grind glutinous rice to extract its white juice and drink freely until recovery. (Cui Wei of Jingyang reports this prescription is particularly effective for Gan Huoluan (Dry Cholera). From Volume 3)
Another prescription for thirst, dry mouth, and persistent abdominal pain after Huoluan: Houpo Guixin Tang (Magnolia Bark and Cinnamon Heart Decoction).
Ingredients:
Houpo (Magnolia officinalis bark), 4 liang, stir-fried.
Guixin (Cinnamomum cassia heartwood), 2 liang.
Preparation:
Slice the two ingredients. Boil in four sheng of water until one sheng and two he remain. Strain to remove dregs. Divide into six doses. Administer slowly. After taking the medicine, if the patient desires cold water, they may drink it to satisfaction. (Commonly used by the Shaofu in Chang'an; avoid raw green onions. From Volume 2)
Etiology of Huoluan with dry retching: This occurs after vomiting and diarrhea, resulting in extreme deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach. The Upper Jiao fails to regulate Qi, leading to Qi stagnation and knotting in the Heart region. Lower Qi rebels upward, causing dry retching. Dry retching refers to the urge to vomit without anything coming out. If exposed to cold, the cold damages Stomach Qi, obstructing its flow, which transforms into hiccups (Yue). (From Volume 22)
*Zhouhou Fang* treats incessant painful vomiting.
Recipe:
Take a handful (one tiger's mouth) of Xiebai (Allium macrostemon bulb), slice it. Boil in three sheng of water until one sheng and five tenths remain. Take orally, not exceeding three doses. (Same as *Beiji Qianjin Yaofang*)
Another prescription: Ganjiang Zhuyu Tang (Dried Ginger and Cornus Decoction).
Ingredients:
Ganjiang (Zingiber officinale dried rhizome), sliced.
Zhuyu (Cornus officinalis fruit), 2 liang each, stir-fried.
Preparation:
Boil the two ingredients in two sheng of water until one sheng remains. Take in one dose. If diarrhea does not stop and extremities become cold, add 100 grains of Huajiao (Zanthoxylum bungeanum) and one Pao Fuzi (Aconitum carmichaelii lateral root, processed), boil in three sheng of water until one sheng remains, and take in one dose. (From Volume 2)
*Shan Fan Fang* treats loss of appetite and persistent vomiting due to weak Stomach Qi after Huoluan: Houpo Tang (Magnolia Bark Decoction).
Ingredients:
Houpo (Magnolia officinalis bark), 4 liang, stir-fried.
Gan Biandou Ye (Dried leaves of Dolichos lablab), 2 liang.
Fuling (Poria cocos sclerotium), 3 liang.
Baizhu (Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome), 5 liang.

*Qianjin Fang* treats dry retching immediately after drinking fluids in Huoluan.
Recipe:
Shengjiang (Zingiber officinale fresh rhizome), 5 liang. Boil in five sheng of water until two sheng and half remain. Divide into two doses. Additionally, boiling Gaoliangjiang (Alpinia officinarum rhizome) for drinking is highly effective. (Recorded in *Yannian Milu*, *Beiji Qianjin Yaofang*, *Xiaopin Fang*, Cui Shi, and Zhang Wenzhong. From Volume 20)
*Jingxin Lu* treats restlessness and vomiting after Huoluan: Houpo Tang (Magnolia Bark Decoction).
Ingredients:
Houpo (Magnolia officinalis bark), 2 liang, stir-fried.
Shengjiang (Zingiber officinale fresh rhizome), 3 liang.
Zhishi (Citrus aurantium immature fruit), 3 liang, stir-fried.
Preparation:
Slice the three ingredients. Boil in six sheng of water until two sheng remain. Divide into three doses. (From Volume 2)
