Its shape is round like the head of a chopstick. Those occurring in the upper part of the throat (Guan Shang) are mild, while those occurring in the lower part (Guan Xia) are severe. If present on the left but not the right, it is called "Single"; if present on both sides, it is called "Double". Double-sided cases are mild, while single-sided cases are severe. Use juice extracted from fresh *Achyranthes bidentata* (Tu Niuxi), hold it in the mouth and swallow slowly. If fresh material is unavailable, dissolving and taking *Tianmingjing Wan* is also acceptable.
Ma said: Holding and swallowing *Achyranthes bidentata* juice acts as an emetic method.
Patients with weak constitutions and much Qi stagnation suffer from this. The throat is neither obstructed nor swollen, breathing is normal, there is slight pain and itching, and difficulty in eating and drinking characterizes this condition. This is caused by Deficient Fire, which is lingering and difficult to cure. Acupuncture is contraindicated, and tonification is feared. One should use *Xuemei Wan* held in the mouth (Chin Han), one pill daily, curable within ten days.
Ma said: Books state that Excess Fire can be purged, and Deficient Fire can be tonified. The statement "fearing tonification" clearly contradicts the principles of the classics; however, the statement "contraindicating acupuncture" is indeed irrefutable. He further stated: This syndrome is due to Kidney Water deficiency causing Deficient Fire to injure the Lung. *Borax* (Danfan) and *Realgar* (Xionghuang) must not be used.
This presents as a red thread like a hair growing from the forehead, suspending a black blister the size of a cherry pit, hanging down to the pharyngeal gate. If punctured with a knife, death ensues. Take the living root of *Achyranthes bidentata*, crush it to extract juice, mix with two or three drops of good vinegar, and drip into the nostrils three or four times. When the red thread breaks and the blister bursts, expelling the stasis blood leads to immediate recovery.
There is no moth-like swelling in the throat, the phlegm sound is not loud, but the sensation of throat closure exists. Treatment details are found in the Decoction Section.
Tao said: Ye Tianshi claimed that "Suo Hou Feng" (Locking Throat Wind) is a fabricated name. This disease has Obstruction Syndrome (Bi Zheng) and Collapse Syndrome (Tuo Zheng). In Obstruction Syndrome, the airway is blocked and orifices are closed, leading to death; in Collapse Syndrome, massive sweating, vomiting, and diarrhea lead to collapse and death. For Obstruction Syndrome, opening the orifices is urgent; for Collapse Syndrome, tonifying deficiency and consolidating is key.
He further stated: Ye said that whenever encountering throat obstruction where the patient cannot open their mouth, cannot take medicine, has cold hands and feet, a cyan-white complexion, no phlegm sound, and a hidden pulse with the body collapsed on the ground, first use *Zijin Dan*, ground in light ginger decoction and administered orally. Subsequently, treat with *Erchen Tang* added with *Shichangpu* (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii), *Yujin* (Radix Curcumae Longae), *Zhike* (Fructus Aurantii), *Xiangfu* (Rhizoma Cyperi), etc., which can lead to recovery.
He further stated: Collapse Syndrome is suitable for large doses of *Ren Shen* (Ginseng Radix) and *Fu Zi* (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), assisted by *Long Gu* (Os Draconis), *Mu Li* (Concha Ostreae), *Wuweizi* (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis), and *Huang Qi* (Radix Astragali Membranacei).
