Throat lichen (Hou Xuan) is characterized by dryness of the throat and the growth of moss-like lesions. Initially, there is itching, which subsequently worsens into dryness, cracking, and pain. Excessive consumption of medicinal wine and pungent/spicy foods (Wu Xin) can cause the affected area to rot and spread, presenting with hole-like shapes resembling ant burrows.
[Note] This condition is also known as "Tian Bai Yi" (Heavenly White Ant). The main symptoms include dryness of the pharynx and esophagus. It begins with a sensation of itching, followed by the emergence of moss-like lesions that are dark red in color and hard in texture, accompanied by dryness, cracking, and pain. There is often expectoration of foul-smelling saliva, which interferes with eating and drinking. This disease arises from overconsumption of fried, roasted, or grilled foods, medicinal wine, and pungent vegetables (such as garlic, scallions, and chives), leading to the accumulation of heat in the Stomach. Stomach fire then steams upward to affect the Lungs, causing this ailment. It is appropriate to take Guangbi Niuniang Decoction; if the lesion has not ulcerated, apply Fanjing San powder via insufflation; if it has ulcerated, apply Qingliang San powder via insufflation. The patient should cultivate a calm mind, reduce desires, and avoid rich flavors and triggering foods (Fa Wu); under such conditions, recovery may be possible in some cases. If treatment is neglected and care is improper, rotting and decay will spread and enlarge, with layers of necrotic tissue accumulating and small holes forming on the sides, resembling ant burrows. Such cases are mostly incurable.
