Chanyao Huodan (Shingles), also known as Snake-String Sores, presents with dry and wet types, and red or yellow colors, resembling strings of pearls. It is caused by wind-heat or damp-heat affecting the Liver, Heart, Spleen, and Lung meridians; if the rash encircles the waist completely, it is intractable.
[Note] This condition is commonly called Snake-String Sores. There are dry and wet variations, with red and yellow color differences, all appearing like clusters of pearls. The dry type appears red, shaped like cloud patches, with wind-like millet-grain papules on the surface, accompanied by itching and fever. This belongs to wind-fire in the Liver and Heart meridians, and is treated with Longdan Xiegan Tang (Gentiana Liver-Draining Decoction). The wet type appears yellowish-white, with water blisters of varying sizes that break and weep fluid, causing more pain than the dry type. This belongs to damp-heat in the Spleen and Lung meridians, and is treated with Chushi Weiling Tang (Dampness-Removing Weiling Decoction). If it occurs on the waist and ribs, it is due to reckless movement of Liver fire, and should be treated with Chaihu Qinggan Tang (Bupleurum Liver-Clearing Decoction). Small blisters within the area should be punctured with a thread needle, and Baiye San (Cunninghamia Leaf Powder) applied externally. If not treated promptly, and the rash encircles the entire waist, allowing toxic factors to enter the umbilicus, leading to abdominal distension, chest oppression, and vomiting, this is considered a adverse prognosis (Ni syndrome).
