The methods of garlic-partitioned moxibustion (Garlic-partitioned Moxibustion), suction cup therapy (Suction Cup Therapy), the formula Hupo Lashan Wan (Amber Wax Pill), Taiyi Gao (Taiyi Ointment), Zhenjun Miaotie San (Zhenjun's Wonderful Paste Powder), and Huxin San (Heart-Protecting Powder) are all recorded in the chapter on "Swollen Ulcers" (Zhongyang Men). The formulas Chansu Wan (Toad Venom Pill) and Chansu Tiao (Toad Venom Strip) are both recorded in the chapter on "Ding Sores" (Dingchuang Men).
The formulas Shiquan Dabu Tang (Complete Ten Tonifying Decoction), Renshen Yangrong Tang (Ginseng Nourishing Qi and Blood Decoction), Rushuang Dingtong San (Frankincense Pain-Calming Powder), and Shengyu Tang (Shengyu Decoction) are all recorded in the chapter on "Ulcerated Sores" (Kuiyang Men).
Ding sores (Ding Sores, a type of acute suppurative infection with rapid progression) are diseases in surgery that progress rapidly. Some may cause death from morning to evening, or immediately upon onset; some may survive three or five days but die after one month or half a month. This depends on the depth of toxin invasion, the reversal of zang-fu organ functions, the coldness or warmth of seasonal climates, the instantaneous changes of autumnal killing qi, collisions by animal corpses or spirits, sudden changes in temperament, and violent outbursts. The disease manifests and is judged instantly. In humans with deficient qi and blood, the toxin attacks according to the deficient zang-fu organs.
If the toxic vapors manifest in the Heart Meridian (Heart Meridian, the meridian connecting the heart to the tongue and small intestine), Flame Ding (Flame Ding, a type of ding sore characterized by redness like flame) is generated. The lesions often occur between the lips and mouth, palms, and finger joints. Initially, a small red-yellow blister appears; scratching causes extreme itching and pain, accompanied by numbness in the limbs on both sides. In severe cases, alternating chills and fever, dizziness, blurred vision, mental restlessness, and confused speech occur. These are diseases originating from the Heart Meridian.
If the toxic vapors manifest in the Liver Meridian (Liver Meridian, the meridian connecting the liver to the eyes and tendons), Purple Swallow Ding (Purple Swallow Ding, a type of ding sore characterized by purple discoloration) is generated. The lesions often occur between the hands and feet, waist and flanks, and bones and tendons. Initially, a purple blister forms; it breaks the next day, bleeding bloody fluid. After three days, the toxin spreads along the tendons, rotting the bones, causing severe pain and suffering. In severe cases, red eyes, dim vision, pure blue fingernails, stiff tongue, coma, sleep-talking, and startle responses occur. These are diseases originating from the Liver Meridian.
If the toxic vapors manifest in the Spleen Meridian (Spleen Meridian, the meridian connecting the spleen to the mouth and muscles), Yellow Drum Ding (Yellow Drum Ding, a type of ding sore characterized by yellow swelling) is generated. Initially, a yellow blister forms, bright and moist, surrounded by redness. The lesions initially appear at the corners of the mouth, cheeks, zygomatic area, upper and lower eyelids, and the frontal region of the Taiyang point. Upon onset, there is numbness and itching, with tight, hard, and rigid skin. In severe cases, nausea and vomiting, numb and painful limbs, alternating chills and fever, irritability, thirst, and dry retching occur. These are diseases originating from the Spleen Meridian.
If the toxic vapors manifest in the Lung Meridian (Lung Meridian, the meridian connecting the lungs to the nose and skin), White Blade Ding (White Blade Ding, a type of ding sore characterized by white hardness) is generated. Initially, a white blister forms, with a hard top and protruding root, leaking fatty fluid upon rupture, causing sudden itching and pain, prone to putrefaction and sinking. In severe cases, damage to the cheeks, scorched throat, erect hair, hot skin, coughing up purulent sputum, nasal congestion, and rapid breathing occur. These are diseases originating from the Lung Meridian.
If the toxic vapors manifest in the Kidney Meridian (Kidney Meridian, the meridian connecting the kidneys to the ears and bones), Black Crust Ding (Black Crust Ding, a type of ding sore characterized by black necrosis) is generated. The lesions often occur in the ear canals, chest and abdomen, and soft flesh in remote areas of the waist and kidneys. Initially, black spots and purple blisters form; the toxin spreads through the skin, gradually attacking the muscles, becoming stubbornly hard like a painful ding, penetrating to the bone marrow. In severe cases, cyanosis of hands and feet, palpitations, heaviness and lethargy, soft sinking with deep holes, and protruding eyeballs occur. These are diseases originating from the Kidney Meridian.
The above five types of Ding sores correspond to the Five Zang Organs. Additionally, Red Thread Ding (Red Thread Ding, a type of ding sore spreading via red lines) starts between the palm joints. Initially resembling a small sore, it gradually develops red threads ascending to the arm, causing frequent chills and fever, and sometimes nausea and vomiting. If delayed, the red thread reaches the heart, often leading to fatal deterioration. Use a needle to prick and bleed at the end of the red thread, then find the initial sore, prick it open, insert a Toad Venom Strip, cover with ointment, and internally administer diaphoretic herbs to disperse the pathogen, resulting in self-healing. In treating this condition, early intervention is crucial. Those treated at the onset are fully cured; those treated slightly late are 50-60% saved; those untreated are only 10-20% saved. For lesions above the neck, the Three Yang Meridians receive the toxin. A Pi needle must be inserted 4-5 fen into the center of the sore to sever the Ding root and release evil blood. Immediately apply Huiding Dan (Return Ding Elixir) or insert a Toad Venom Strip covered with ointment. For lesions below the neck, the Three Yin Meridians receive the toxin. Moxibustion should be applied; if moxibustion does not cause pain, acupuncture and herb insertion are necessary for efficacy. Subsequently, administer Chansu Wan. In winter, administer Wanling Dan to induce heavy sweating, allowing the toxin to resolve, preventing the retention of toxic vapors and the generation of complicated symptoms. Current treatment methods, regardless of yin/yang, exterior/interior, or upper/lower locations, apply moxibustion to any such sore. However, the head is the summit of all Yang meridians, caused by extreme hyperactive yang heat. Although small in appearance, its malignancy is great. Adding moxibustion increases the fire's momentum, forcing the toxin inward, leading to "Inverted Collapse" (Dao Xian, sinking of the lesion inward) and "Running Yellow" (Zou Huang, systemic spread of toxin). Once these conditions arise, the head, face, ears, and neck swell, resembling a corpse's edema, and the Seven Evil Signs (Seven Evils, seven critical signs of poor prognosis) appear. Although treatments exist, fewer than one or two in a hundred survive. Furthermore, there are several other types of Ding sores with various shapes, which is why old descriptions were not re-recorded here.
