The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: If the Shen (Spirit) is damaged by excessive thinking, the flesh will waste away; if the Yi (Intellect/Intent) is damaged by sorrow and worry, the limbs will become disabled; if the Hun (Ethereal Soul) is damaged by grief, the sinews will contract; if the Po (Corporeal Soul) is damaged by excessive joy, the skin will wither; if the Zhi (Willpower) is damaged by extreme anger, the waist and spine will become stiff and difficult to bend or extend. Injuries caused by the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Thinking, Grief, Fear, Fright) are conditions where Qi and Blood are damaged. Treatment should first focus on nourishing Qi and Blood.
Menstruation is governed by the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian and the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. These two meridians are exteriorly-interiorly related. Upper in the body, they transform into breast milk; lower in the body, they transform into menstruation. This is the residual Qi of the collaterals. Provided there is no external invasion by the Six Evils (Wind, Cold, Summerheat, Dampness, Dryness, Fire), and no internal injury from the Seven Emotions, if the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach is robust, then the Qi of the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) will be abundant, thus forming menstruation that arrives on time. However, if the complexion is sallow and withered, the limbs are emaciated, accompanied by fever and dry mouth, and menstruation is delayed and scanty, this indicates a deficiency of Yin Blood, not a condition of excess blood stasis. It is appropriate to use formulas that nourish Qi and Blood, cultivating slowly so that Jing Qi becomes abundant and menstruation naturally flows on schedule.
It is also said: If a male engages in sexual intercourse to release essence before his Jing Essence has fully developed and circulated, his five bodies will have areas of incomplete development, and later he may suffer from inexplicable diseases. If a female, whose Kidney Yang is already weak and flaccid, still indulges in lustful thoughts, her Jing Essence will fail to exit and instead rot internally, causing the urinary pathway to become obstructed, resulting in Lin Syndrome (painful/difficult urination). If Jing Essence is already depleted yet further exhausted, it will cause pulling pain in the pathways of both large and small intestines. The more painful it is, the more one desires to defecate or urinate; the more one excretes, the more severe the pain becomes. When a female's Tian Gui (menstrual essence/substance promoting sexual maturity) has arrived, if she does not cohabit with a man for over ten years, her menstruation will become irregular; if under ten years but she yearns for cohabitation, her menstruation will also become irregular. Irregularity means old blood fails to exit, and new blood flows recklessly, potentially ulcerating into the bones or transforming into swellings/masses. Even if cohabitation occurs, conception may be difficult. Excessive cohabitation drains essence leading to deficiency. Multiple births and lactations deplete blood, potentially causing death. Observing the importance of Jing and Essence, one understands half of the matter.
It is also said: Human life is based on Qi and Blood as its root. No illness arises without first injuring Qi and Blood. Among unmarried youths, those who harbor obsessive thoughts and think excessively often develop consumptive disorders. Males show scattered spirit and complexion first; females show amenorrhea first. Why is this? Roughly speaking, sorrow and worry injure the Heart. Heart injury leads to rebellious and枯竭 (exhaustion) of blood. Rebellious and exhausted blood causes the spirit and complexion to scatter first, and menstruation to close first. Since Heart Fire is diseased, it cannot nourish its "child" organ (Spleen Earth), leading to poor appetite. Since the Spleen is deficient, Lung Metal Qi is impaired, leading to cough. Once coughing occurs, Kidney Water Qi is cut off, leading to dry limbs. Liver Wood Qi is insufficient, leading to irritability, scorched hair, and flaccid sinews and bones. When the Five Zang Organs' qi transmits throughout the body, sudden death ensues. Ultimately, death results. This type of disease is the most difficult to treat among consumptive disorders because it originates within the Five Zang Organs, has no definite end date, and is beyond the reach of medicinal power. If the patient can change their mindset and receive medicinal support, there might be a slim chance of survival (one in nine chances of recovery).
It is also said: For unmarried girls with long-standing amenorrhea, Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) and other cooling agents must absolutely not be used. Physicians often assume unmarried girls have blood heat, so they use cooling medicines to resolve it. They fail to realize that blood moves when warm and coagulates when cold. (*Yangsheng Biyong Fang*) explains this in detail. This theory is highly reasonable and must be understood. If menstruation is slightly scanty and gradually stops, accompanied by vexation and pain in the hands, feet, bones, and muscles, progressive emaciation, gradual onset of tidal fever, and a slightly rapid pulse, this is due to Yin deficiency and blood weakness, allowing Yang to invade. Like a small amount of water failing to extinguish a raging fire, the fire forces the water to dry up and fluids to perish. One should nourish blood and benefit Yin. Do not use harsh drugs to forcibly unblock menstruation. Harsh drugs are fierce and tend to assist Yang fire; Yin blood exposed to them will flow recklessly, and the Spleen and Stomach will become increasingly deficient. Only Baizi Ren Wan (Bai Zi Ren Pill) and Zelan Wan (Zelan Pill) are suitable.
