When the seasonal epidemic disease (Shi Qi, seasonal infectious diseases) reaches the fifth day, the Shaoyin meridian is affected. The Shaoyin meridian passes through the Kidney and connects with the Lung, and is linked to the root of the tongue. Therefore, on the fifth day of illness, symptoms such as heat in the mouth, dryness of the tongue, thirst, and a desire to drink water occur. At this stage, the pathogen is located in the intestines, so the disease can be cured by purgation.
For the treatment of Shi Qi on the fifth day, characterized by high fever and a洪数 (Hong-Shu, surging and rapid) pulse in all three positions (Cun, Guan, Chi), purgation may be employed. The Da Huang Yin Zi (Rhubarb Drink) formula is suitable.
