The condition of Pi (abdominal mass) leading to an inability to eat is caused by the deficiency and weakness of the Spleen and Stomach, where pathogenic factors invade and contend with the healthy Qi. The Spleen governs the breakdown and transformation of food and fluids to nourish the four Zang organs (Heart, Liver, Lung, Kidney), and generates Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi as well as Blood. If the pathogenic factor accumulates in the abdomen, the Spleen Qi becomes deficient, resulting in an inability to eat.
