The viscera and bowels of a person are in disharmony. The Spleen and Stomach are weak. Yang Qi (Vital Energy) declines on the exterior, while Yin Qi accumulates within. Cold and wind pathogens invade and contend between the Spleen and Stomach, lingering and failing to disperse. This leads to indigestion of food and drink, resulting in abdominal distension and fullness.
For treating Spleen Qi deficiency with abdominal and hypochondriac distension, difficulty digesting food, sallow complexion, and weakness in the four limbs, the Nongpo Wan (Magnolia Bark Pill) formula is suitable.
Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Nongpo, 2 liang, remove coarse bark, coat with fresh ginger juice, roast until fragrant and cooked); Syzygium aromaticum Flos (Dingxiang, Clove, 0.5 liang); Agastaches Rhizoma (Muxiang, Patchouli Rhizome, 0.5 liang); Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, Prepared Lateral Root of Monkshood, 1 liang, processed until cracked, remove outer bark and umbilical scar); Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Jiang, Fresh Ginger, 3 fen, processed, remove white pith, baked).
Crush the above herbs into a coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong zhan (approx. 200ml) of water, 0.5 fen of fresh ginger, and 3 jujubes. Decoct until 6 fen remains. Strain the dregs. Take slightly warm before meals. Avoid raw, cold, greasy, damp wheat noodles, and sticky foods.
For treating Spleen Qi deficiency with epigastric and abdominal distension, irregular large bowel function, poor appetite, and limb weakness, the Chenjupi San (Aged Tangerine Peel Powder) formula is suitable.
Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenjupi, Aged Tangerine Peel, 1.5 liang, soak in hot water, remove white pith, bake); Piperis Longi Fructus (Hujiao, Long Pepper, 0.5 liang); Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, Cinnamon Twig Bark, 3 fen); Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, Prepared Lateral Root of Monkshood, 1 liang, processed until cracked, remove outer bark and umbilical scar); Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma (Gaoliangjiang, Galangal, 1 liang, roasted).
Grind the above herbs into a fine powder. Before meals, take 1 qian mixed with thin rice gruel. Avoid raw, cold, and greasy foods.
For treating Spleen Qi deficiency with abdominal and hypochondriac distension, discomfort in the four limbs, greenish-yellow complexion, and anorexia, the Caodoukou San (Cardamom Powder) formula is suitable.
