There are five types of Gu Zheng (Bone Steaming Disease). The first is called Gu Zheng. Its root lies in the Kidney. In the morning, the body feels cool; by evening, there is heat and irritability. The four limbs feel restless, and food has no taste.
The second is called Rou Zheng (Flesh Steaming). Its root lies in the Spleen. There is excessive talking, and a sensation of fullness or distension in the chest and back.
The third is called Mai Zheng (Vessel Steaming). Its root lies in the Heart. The face appears red, and the skin is dry and rough like snake scales or fish scales.
The fourth is called Xue Zheng (Blood Steaming). Its root lies in the Liver. Vision becomes blurred.
The fifth is called Jin Zheng (Tendon Steaming). Its root lies in the Lungs. The fingernails become withered and discolored.
Generally, various Zheng conditions often arise after recovery from febrile diseases, due to consuming beef, mutton, or greasy foods, or through indulgence in alcohol or sexual activity, thereby violating dietary and lifestyle taboos. If this condition persists without resolution, it often leads to critical illness.
For treating Gu Zheng Lao (Bone Steaming Consumption) causing vexatious heat, restlessness of the heart and spirit, dark and scanty urination, occasional coughing, emaciation and weakness of the four limbs, and pain, the Digupi San (Tree Bark Powder) formula is suitable.
Digupi (Cortex Lycii Radicis, 3 fen), Baihe (Bulbus Lilii, 3 fen), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae, 3 fen), Chi Fuling (Poria Cocos with Red Cortex, 3 fen), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 0.5 liang, remove radicle), Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, 3 fen), Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, 1 liang, coat with vinegar and roast until slightly yellow, remove skirt-like edges).
Crush the above herbs and sieve them into a coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong of water and 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), decoct until 0.6 zhong remains. Strain and take at any time.
For treating Gu Zheng Lao causing vexation and fullness in the heart and diaphragm, high fever, dry lips and mouth, dark urine, headache, and emaciation, the Tianlinggai San (Human Skull Cap Powder) formula is suitable.
Tianlinggai (Calvaria Humana, 1 liang, coat with butter and roast until slightly yellow), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, 1 liang, remove seedlings), Sanggenbaipi (Cortex Morus Radicis, 1 liang, cut into pieces), Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, 1 liang, coat with vinegar and roast until slightly yellow, remove skirt-like edges).
Sieve the above herbs into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong of Tongzi Xiaoniao (Child's Urine), one handful each of Taozhi (Ramulus Persicae) and Liuzhi (Ramulus Salicis) tender branches (7 stems total), and 50 grains of Chi Dou (Semen Sojae Praeparatum). Decoct and take.
For treating Gu Zheng Lao causing pain in the four limbs, tendon spasm and tightness, alternating chills and fever resembling malaria, gradual sallow complexion, and inability to eat, the Tianlinggai San formula is suitable.
Tianlinggai (Calvaria Humana, 0.5 liang, coat with butter and roast until slightly yellow, crush into powder), Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, 0.5 liang, coat with vinegar and roast until slightly yellow, remove skirt-like edges, crush into powder), Taoren (Semen Persicae, 1 liang, soak in hot water, remove skin and pointed ends, double kernels, stir-fry with bran until slightly yellow), Chi Dou (Semen Sojae Praeparatum, 0.5 he).
Finely cut the above herbs and mix evenly. Use 3 zhongs of Tongzi Xiaoniao. Soak from Wu hour (11 AM-1 PM) until Wugeng (3 AM-5 AM). Decoct to obtain 1 zhong. Strain and take warm before meals.
For treating Gu Zheng Lao emaciation, body pain, and vexatious heat, the Taozhi Yinzi (Peach Twig Drink) formula is suitable.
Nen Taozhi (Ramulus Persicae Tender Branch, one handful long, 3-7 cun), Liuzhi (Ramulus Salicis, one handful long, 3-7 stems), Dixin (Bud Sojae, 0.5 he), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 3 fen, raw use), Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 1 fen, sliced).
Finely cut the above herbs. Decoct in 2 large zhongs of Tongzi Xiaoniao until 1.5 zhong remains. Strain. Take warm in three divided doses at any time.
For treating Gu Zheng Lao causing vexatious heat, pain in the four limbs, and dark yellow urine, the Shengdihuang Yinzi (Rehmanniae Juice Drink) formula is suitable.
Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens, 2 liang), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, 1 liang, remove seedlings), Congbai (Bulbus Allii Cepae, 5 cun, sliced), Xiangchi (Herba Desmodii Styracifolii, 0.5 he), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.5 liang, raw use), Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 1 fen, sliced).
Finely cut and mix the above herbs. Take 0.5 liang per dose. Decoct in 1 zhong of Tongzi Xiaoniao until 0.5 zhong remains. Strain and take warm at any time.
For treating Gu Zheng heat causing vexatious pain in the four limbs and constipation with difficult defecation, regardless of duration, theawei San (Asafoetida Powder) formula is suitable.
Awei (Resina Asafetidae, 1 fen, wrapped in wheat bran and roasted until the bran is cooked), Chuanda Huanglian (Radix Rhei Palmati, 0.5 liang, cut into pieces and lightly stir-fried), Binglang (Semen Arecae, 1 liang), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae, 1 fen), Taoren (Semen Persicae, 3 kernels, soak in hot water, remove skin and pointed ends, double kernels, stir-fry with bran until slightly yellow).
Grind the above herbs into a fine powder. Grind 1 qian of Shexiang (Moschus) separately and mix evenly with the Taoren. Before meals, take with 0.5 he of Qinghao juice (Herba Artemisiae Annuae) and 0.5 he of Shengjiang juice.
For treating Gu Zheng Lao heat causing restlessness of the heart and spirit, dry mouth, dry eyes, and cough, the Huanglian Jian (Coptis Decoction/Paste) formula is suitable.
Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, 1 liang, remove mustache), Ziwan (Herba Asteris Tatarici, 1 liang, wash and remove seedlings and soil), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 3 fen, roast until slightly yellow and cut), Tianlinggai (Calvaria Humana, 1.5 liang, coat with butter and roast until slightly yellow).
Grind the above herbs into a fine powder. Soak in 5 zhongs of Tongzi Xiaoniao overnight. Simmer over low heat until it forms a paste. Take at any time, mixed with millet drink.
