(Attached: Diseases of the Throat, Teeth, and Eyes)
Discussion on Sore Throat Caused by Accumulated Heat: When there is heat stagnation in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), heart-heat causing restlessness and thirst, and tubercles/swellings in the cheeks and jaw, Yuxie Wuyou San (Jade Dust Worries-Free Powder), Niuhuang Liangge Wan (Bovine Calculus Cooling Diaphragm Pill), Xiaodu Xijiao Yin (Detoxifying Rhinoceros Horn Drink), Sishun Yin (Four Smoothnesses Drink), Jiedu Wan (Detoxification Pill), and Ji Re Sanhuang Wan (Accumulated Heat Three-Yellow Pill) may be used. For sores on the mouth and tongue, Bixue (Green Snow), Longnao Yin (Camphor Drink), Yuxie Wuyou San, Ganlu Yin (Sweet Dew Drink), and Pengsha Wan (Borax Pill) may be used. For swollen and painful throat with difficulty swallowing, Rusheng Tang (Like-Sage Decoction), Bazheng San (Eight Righteous Powders), Sishun Yin, Longnao Yin, Ganlu Yin, Xixin San (Heart-Cleansing Powder), Niuhuang Liangge Wan, Xijiao Yin, Bohe Jian (Peppermint Decoction), and Shilong San (Stone Dragon Powder) may be used. For difficult urination caused by accumulated heat, Daochi Wan (Guide Out Red Pill) and Wulin San (Five Strangury Powders) may be used. For constipation, Qingxin Yin (Clear Heart Drink), Sanhuang Wan (Three-Yellow Pill), and Xixin San may be taken.
Discussion on Hou Bi (Throat Closure) and Hou Feng (Throat Wind): If wind-pathogens lodge in the throat, causing qi stagnation and heat, obstruction occurs leading to sore throat. If heat arises from the Lung and Stomach, and wind-toxins accumulate and surge, swelling and knotting occur forming Hou Bi (Throat Bi). If the condition manifests as a Xuan Yong (Hanging Abscess) on the soft palate, although not directly involving the throat passage, sudden swelling is also caused by heat. The Xuan Yong of the throat is critical; if not treated urgently, it can be fatal. For Hou Bi and Chan Hou Feng (Entangling Throat Wind), Jiedu Wan, Xixin San, Yuxie Wuyou San, and Bixue may be used; for severe cases, Jiedu Xionghuang Wan (Detoxifying Realgar Pill) may be used.
Discussion on Toothache: Toothaches present various syndromes. There is heat-type toothache, characterized by floating gums throughout the mouth and pain due to heat in the upper diaphragm. There is deficiency-type toothache, caused by Kidney Jing (Kidney Meridian) weakness and deficiency-heat attacking upwards. There is wind-type toothache. One must carefully differentiate the syndrome before administering medicine. Swollen and inflamed gums, hot breath, and loose teeth indicate a heat syndrome; Sishun Yin, Ganlu Yin, Xixin San, Longnao Yin, Qingxin Yinzi, and Bazheng San may be used, followed by gargling and spitting out Shengma Gegen Tang (Ephedra and Pueraria Decoction); taking a small amount of internal medicine concurrently is acceptable. For toothache caused by Kidney Jing deficiency and upward-attacking deficiency-heat, or for elderly and weak individuals, Huang Wan, Anshen Wan (Kidney-Anchoring Pill), Lurong Wan (Deer Antler Pill), and Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) may be used, followed by applying Fuyan San (Banqueting Powder) externally and gargling with Shengma Gegen Tang. For wind-invasion toothache, common in robust young people, Xixin San and Fuyan San may be applied to rub the teeth, expelling wind and phlegm; after some time, gargle and spit out Shengma Gegen Tang, then administer Heishen Wan (Black Divine Pill), Ruxiang Wan (Frankincense Pill), and Bailong Wan (White Dragon Pill). For toothache induced by alcohol consumption, rinse with well-water, or hold cold tea made from Baiyaojian (Fermented Medicinal Brick) in the mouth and swallow, or chew and apply Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit); these methods are generally applicable.
Discussion on Various Eye Syndromes: Dim vision and unclear sight without swelling, pain, redness, or membranes indicates Neizhang (Internal Cataract). Seeing black spots or experiencing cold tears indicates dual deficiency of the Spleen and Kidney; cooling medicines should not be administered immediately. Instead, Mingyan Dihuang Wan (Bright-Eye Rehmannia Pill), Juqing Wan (Chrysanthemum-Light Pill), Zhujing Wan (Scenery-Residing Pill), Huanjing Wan (Vision-Restoring Pill), Mianjiu Wan (Cotton Turtledove Pill), and Jueming Wan (Clear-Sight Pill) may be used. For ordinary Liver wind-heat causing itchy, dry, dim eyes with tearing and blindness, Pusao San (Bodhisattva Powder), Jueming San, Huanjing Wan, Boyun Wan (Cloud-Dispelling Pill), Juhua San (Chrysanthemum Powder), and Mimenghua San (Buddleja Flower Powder) may be used. For Kidney-wind causing itchy eyes, Sisheng San (Four-Generations Powder), Qinpi San (Fraxinus Bark Powder), and Tangpao San (Decoction-Soaked Powder) may be used, washed with Zijin Gao (Purple Gold Ointment), and instilled with Chunxue Gao (Spring Snow Ointment). For external cataracts/membranes invading the eye and long-standing Nourou (Pterygium), Zhujing Wan and Juqing Wan may be taken on an empty stomach, while Jueming Wan and Boyun Yin (Cloud-Dispelling Drink) may be taken after meals.
Discussion on Various Cases of Blood Heat Acting Wildly: For unceasing hematemesis (vomiting blood) or epistaxis (nosebleed) accompanied by dizziness and yellowing of the eyes, Longnao Jisu Wan (Camphor Mulberry Leaf Pill), Bohe Jian, and Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Jingjie (Schizonepeta) and decocted may be used.
