One hundred and twenty-eight, Huoxue San (Blood-Invigorating Powder). It treats this type of chuangzhen (smallpox/rubella-like eruption) syndrome where the rash fails to emerge, emerges slowly, or exhibits daoye (retraction/poor resolution after emergence). All such cases are suitable for taking this medicine.
Take Bai Shaoyao (White Peony Root, *Paeonia lactiflora*) stir-fried and ground into a fine powder. Mix with warm Jiu (Alcohol/Wine) for oral administration; adding one spoonful of wine may accelerate the emergence of the rash. If pain relief is desired, mix only with warm water for administration; please adjust according to circumstances. This is a medicine that regulates Yingwei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi). As stated in Zhang’s *Miaoxuan Fang* (Miraculous Selection Formulas): When the Qi of chuangzhen is even, it emerges; when Qi flows smoothly, it is because Yingwei are unobstructed. Furthermore, Shaoyao (Peony Root) treats epidemic chills and fever and dissipates carbuncles and swellings, thus treating chuangdou (smallpox/variolous eruptions). The *Suwen* (Plain Questions) discusses that the feet can walk when nourished by blood, the eyes can see when nourished by blood, and the hands can grasp objects when nourished by blood. In the *Heren Shu* (Book of Living People), a case describes contracting cold, with a large Cun pulse and weak Chi pulse, and spasms in both legs, attributed to deficiency of blood in the Lower Jiao preventing extension. Three doses of Shaoyao Gancao Tang (Peony and Licorice Decoction) allowed the legs to extend without spasms and enabled walking; it is commonly effective. Another case involved an elderly noble who could not kneel or bow; Physician Xuan used Lixin Tang (Six Pungent Decoction), consisting of six taels of Bai Shaoyao (White Peony Root) and half a tael of Gancao (Licorice Root). After ten days of consumption, he could walk. This too is Huoxue San, promoting the circulation of Yingwei.
One hundred and twenty-nine, Renci San (Human Tooth Powder). It treats chuangzhen that has emerged but not smoothly, or exhibits daoye (retraction) after emergence, accompanied by chills and fever but with a slow pulse. It also treats cases where purgative actions on the skin cause delayed emergence, redness on the face and forehead with a non-surging pulse, excessive intake of cooling medicines leading to stagnant blood and weak Qi, or rash emerging sluggishly, faintly visible under the skin. Administer mixed with wine. Qian Yi’s supplementary formula treats daoye of chuangzhen by adding Shexiang (Musk) and mixing with wine, which is especially good. It further states: for daoye where the rash does not emerge, add seven Chi Xiaodou (Adzuki Beans) and mix with Bohe Jiu (Mint Wine). If the color is black, it is called "Gui Chuangzi" (Ghost Eruption); administer two qian mixed with Pig Blood, and repeat after some time.
Take shed human teeth, seal them tightly in a porcelain bottle, fire intensely until red-hot, allow to cool, remove, and grind into powder. Mix with Bohe Jiu (Mint Wine) for administration, half a qian per dose. After a while, the pulse becomes calm, toxic factors disperse, and the rash emerges like millet grains. Detailed analysis shows this is a medicine to bring out chuangzhen. Similar to sweating agents for Taihan (Cold Damage) exterior syndrome, treating Taihan requires assessing the depth of Yingwei involvement; bringing out chuangzhen from the exterior requires assessing the degree of accumulated heat. One must fear that if accumulated heat is slight but medication is too heavy, it will lead to banlan (diffuse macular eruptions). For those already emerged but not smooth, Huoxue San, Jili Jiu (Tribulus Wine), or Grape Wine are suitable. For those emerged yet exhibiting daoye, Renci San is necessary, so that the disease, the medicine, and the patient’s weak constitution are appropriately matched. Otherwise, mild disease treated with heavy medicine becomes a burden. Later generations fail to investigate the severity of toxic factors and apply medicines uniformly, resulting in many premature deaths. Previously, a scholar from a wealthy family suffered from chuangzhen that emerged slightly late. He used Zhengqi San (Regular Qi Powder) plus Bai Shaoyao, and also Hui Su Jiu (Coriander Wine) and Hou Li Jiu (Monkey Pear Wine), yet emergence remained slow. His family stated: generally, physicians use medicines too mildly. Starting from nightfall, five teeth were burned and administered with wine, causing all body rashes to emerge, shocking listeners with its efficacy. Upon re-examination, the pulse was faint, and the back of the head and both feet were entirely white, indicating weak Yingwei, scant heat-toxin, and excessive medicinal force, leading to insufficient Yang Qi to respond, hence lack of blood color. It was advised: Yang Qi has exhausted itself at the exterior; now there is interior cold, transforming into dampness, which inevitably causes ru xie (watery diarrhea). Urgently administer Erqi Dan (Two Qi Pill) as small pills. After consuming half a liang, watery diarrhea stopped after two days. Subsequently, Neibu San (Interior-Nourishing Powder) was taken to treat chuangdou. Having taken Renci San, the exterior resolved into banlan (diffuse macular eruptions), merging into one mass over the whole body, requiring over a month of recuperation to heal. The person’s spirit gradually recovered, likely due to depletion of Heart fluids. Detailed examination shows Renci (Human Teeth) effectively treats mastitis with abscess rupture and extracts arrowhead splinters; it is very effective for chuangzhen. However, mistaken early use leads to exponential worsening, causing banlan, collapse, and interior cold, which must be known. There are also children in rural and market areas who, while suffering from chuangdou, walk in the wind and tolerate Puxiao (Mirabilite) and Dahuang (Rhubarb) without harm. It is feared that the constitution of the wealthy differs from the poor; treatment should follow individual suitability. As mentioned earlier: taking Renci San with a faint pulse and white rash indicates weak exterior Yang; watery diarrhea indicates abundant interior Yin. Unless Erqi Dan is used first, if diarrhea persists and treatment is delayed, it would surely lead to collapse.
One hundred and thirty, Neibu San (Interior-Nourishing Powder). It treats children currently suffering from chuangzhen who contract external cold, suffer internal injury from raw/cold foods, or take excessive cold medicines, resulting in vomiting, diarrhea, Spleen deficiency, and stagnant blood. The chuangzhen emerges slowly, the skin is emaciated and lacks blood color. While internally taking various medicines to regulate the Spleen and Stomach, externally taking this medicine can nourish Blood and Qi, allowing the chuang toxin to emerge.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Dang Gui (Chinese Angelica Root), Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root, stir-fried), Chuan Xiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome), Mu Xiang (Aucklandia Root), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Nong Po (Magnolia Bark, ginger-processed), Ju Pi (Citrus Peel, pith removed).
Grind equal parts into a fine powder. Take one qian per dose, add two spoonfuls of wine, mix with warm water, and administer orally, regardless of timing. Wang Zijian said: Zhang Zhongjing discussed syndromes extensively but used few medicines, detailing treatments for men while briefly mentioning women. He claimed this was due to forced interpretation; had Zhang Zhongjing been alive, his formulas would have had room for application, and there would have been no "huai bing" (ruined diseases). Today, physicians treat illnesses chaotically, seeking profit, often making errors. Later sages prescribe remedies to compensate for these inadequacies; thus, more formulas exist merely to correct mistakes. Using Neibu San for chuangzhen is also correcting mistakes. Vulgar people often say: chuangzhen is a heat-toxin; seeing the medicine is slightly warm, they assume it is a mistake. This is an error of imprudence. They do not realize that Taihan (Cold Damage) is caused by cold, yet sometimes Da Huang (Rhubarb Root), Pu Xiao (Mirabilite), Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), and Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome) are used. These all remedy temporary inadequacies. If these are not recorded, people may remain stubborn and biased, failing to complete comprehensive strategies for urgent and chronic care, leading to many failures due to doubt and poor planning.
