Treats women during the antenatal and postnatal periods, presenting with visual hallucinations of red flowers, or sudden onset of mania resembling possession by spirits, retention of the placenta (Baoyi), aphonia, abdominal distension and fullness, indigestion of water and grain, dry mouth with irritability and thirst, alternating chills and fever, oral ulcers, sore throat and swelling, heart deficiency with palpitations, insomnia at night, as well as postnatal wind-stroke, opisthotonos (body arched like a bow), flushed face with locked jaw, metrorrhagia with blood discharge resembling pig liver, umbilical and abdominal pain, regardless of whether bleeding is excessive or scanty, blood stasis condensing into masses (Zhijia), mental confusion and coma, numbness and fullness in the four limbs, fetal restlessness before delivery, and stabbing pain from blood stasis after delivery. All these conditions are treated by this formula.
Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (washed, pounded, juice extracted through cloth squeezing; residue retained. The residue is stir-fried with fresh ginger juice, and the ginger residue is stir-fried with Shengdihuang juice, until both are completely dry and ground into fine powder) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) (washed, pounded to pulp, natural juice extracted through cloth squeezing, residue retained; quantity: two jin each) Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizoma) (mixed with glutinous rice, stir-fried until red, remove glutinous rice) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (remove seedlings) Hupo (Succinum) (separately ground, one liang each) Puhuang (Pollinis Typhae) (stir-fried until fragrant, four liang)
Grind all above into fine powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill per dose. Before meals, dissolve the pill using decoction prepared from Danggui.
Treats body pain during the antenatal and postnatal periods. *Baoshi Lun* states: Body pain occurs when the musculature is deficient and weak, allowing wind-pathogens to lodge in the meridians. The pathogenic qi fights against the healthy qi, clashing between bone and flesh, resulting in body pain and immobility. Longxu Tang is the primary prescription. If body pain occurs during pregnancy, it is necessarily caused by excessive physical labor. Otherwise, if the meridians are invaded by wind-cold, Yutong Wan Fangfeng Tang should be used. Postpartum body pain accompanied by inability to move is largely due to the opening of all joints after childbirth and the flow of blood vessels. Qi deficiency leads to blood stagnation in the bone and flesh, causing tension in the meridians of all joints. Consequently, the waist and back cannot turn or bend, and the hands and feet cannot move. The body feels hot as if swallowing charcoal, and the head hurts as if nailed. If physicians fail to recognize this condition and mistakenly induce sweating for what they consider Shanghan (Cold Damage), other complications will arise. This formula is suitable for such cases.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (one liang, honey-fried) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (remove radix neck, soaked in wine) Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) (wash off seedlings, soak in wine overnight; if urgent use is needed, steam with wine until hot) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (remove radix neck) Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) (remove radix neck) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (two qian half each)
Cut the herbs into small pieces. For each dose, take half liang. Add five zhen of water, ten slices of fresh ginger, and a handful of Xiebai (Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus). Decoct together until three zhen remain. Remove dregs. Take at any time.
