A pulse color that is purely red indicates the initial stage of illness, representing Yang syndrome, Heat syndrome, with the pathogen located in the exterior.
A pulse color that is red and purple indicates disease transmission and an interior location. There may still be heat on the exterior, or only heat present, which is classified as Yang.
A pulse color that is red or purple mixed with green indicates a lingering illness, alternating chills and fever, with changes induced by external factors.
A pulse color that is purely green indicates a long-standing illness that has passed through the regular meridian cycles, representing Cold (if heat is internal, it represents Yin; if the pulse color is green and yellow, it indicates extreme severity of illness, representing Cold; extreme cold transforms into heat, making treatment difficult, representing Deficiency-Cold). This signifies interference among the pathogens of the five Zang organs and contradictory Yin-Yang syndromes.
A pulse color that is green and black indicates extreme severity of illness, or recurrence of a chronic illness, with a dark sallow complexion.
A pulse color that is black with yellow showing, where the yellow is exposed, indicates a fatal prognosis with no survivors out of ten, signifying great misfortune.
Crimson red signifies the exhaustion of Heart Qi. Since Fire corresponds to the Heart and governs upward flaming, knowing that Heart Qi exhaustion leads to death.
Main manifestations include: teeth grinding, tongue playing, protrusion of a flaccid tongue, sores all over the mouth, wooden tongue (stiff and swollen tongue), thrush, throat closure (obstruction of the throat), white coating on the tongue, short lingual frenulum pulling down, swelling and ulceration of the throat, accumulation of phlegm and saliva rising upward, fish-mouth (ulcers at the corners of the mouth). These are critical and ominous signs.
Red pulses appearing in the "Bian Zheng" pattern (physiological phenomena during infant growth and development) mainly manifest as irritability and crying, moderate high fever on the head and abdomen, subsiding after one or two days.
Red pulses appearing in the Taiyin area indicate signs of Shanghan (Cold Damage), manifesting as high fever and nasal congestion.
Red pulses appearing in the Wentai area, more than three days into Shanghan, manifest as internal heat and headache.
Redness in the Taiyang pulse extending to Taiyin indicates heat inside and outside. If connected to Wentai, extreme heat fails to resolve. Upon reaching Wutai, variable syndromes gradually develop.
Red pulses in the fontanelle indicate signs of fetal exposure to heat and fright, manifesting as frequent startles, frequent whimpering, night crying, and difficulty sleeping.
Red pulses on the forehead extending to the glabella indicate signs of wind-stroke and fever. If introduced to Yintang, it indicates convulsions due to wind-phlegm with heat, manifesting as scanty and difficult urination.
Appearance of red pulses at Yintang indicates accumulated heat in the Heart Meridian. Red pulses connecting the glabella to Yintang, or red shadows involving the Heart and Liver, indicate heat accumulation in the Upper Jiao, rising phlegm and saliva, traversing the Upper Jiao, night crying, impending wind-stroke signs. Near the lower left of the eyebrow, there is a convex/concave wind sign, with frequent startles during sleep.
Swelling and protrusion of red pulses in the fontanelle indicate wind-heat and phlegm generating wind-stroke. This is precisely due to urgent upward rushing of heat qi, with unceasing heat-phlegm in the Heart and Stomach, gradually forming wind-stroke signs.
Using cooling formulas to eliminate phlegm and clear heat will bring peace. For example, if red pulses in the fontanelle extend to Yintang, it lasts longer than typical wind-stroke convulsions.
Redness at the left eyebrow indicates that Bian Zheng heat has not yet subsided, indicating heat in the Liver and Lungs. Formulas that clear the Lungs, disperse wind-heat, and regulate Stomach Qi should be used.
Redness at Fengchi indicates wind-heat in the Upper and Middle Jiao, with imminent convulsions. Wind should be intercepted and phlegm resolved.
Redness at Qichi indicates prolonged wind-cold transmission to the Zang organs, with heat in the Sanjiao. Frequent purgative/diuretic methods can be used.
Redness at the glabella and Yintang indicates heat-fright. If phlegm-fluids are not expectorated, it becomes wind-stroke convulsions.
Red pulses from Yintang to Shangen indicate heat in the Heart and Small Intestine, with red, scanty, and difficult urination.
Redness below Shangen on the nasal bridge indicates heat in the Heart and Stomach, with both urine and stool being red, scanty, and difficult.
Redness from Yintang extending to Shangzhun indicates accumulated heat in the Sanjiao, treatable with cooling agents.
Red-yellow color on Shangzhun indicates stability and health.
Red pulses at Yimen indicate external kidney issues due to wind-warmth, generating heat leading to torsion.
Redness in the face center indicates internal irritability and heat.
Red pulses in the right Taiyang and Ri Jiao areas indicate milk stasis caused by the mother's wind-cold obstructing milk flow, forming breast lumps, stagnating to generate wind-heat-phlegm syndromes.
Red pulses in the right Taiyin area indicate ingestion of milk containing phlegm from the mother's febrile disease, fearing phlegm generation and introduction.
Red pulses in Wutai gradually form signs of vomiting, diarrhea, and wind-stroke.
Redness at Fengchi indicates the mother did not avoid pepper, ginger, noodles, or pork/mutton bone broth, leading to toxic milk generating wind.
Redness at Qichi indicates the mother has heat-phlegm. Even if the nursing child reaches ten years old, the disease must manifest. This heat-phlegm milk enters the child's five Zang organs, causing blurry vision, and transmitting to other diseases.
Redness at Yimen indicates Qi disease in the Kidney. Due to the mother's drinking habits, preference for strange foods, or consumption of chicken, goose, duck, raw fish, leeks, garlic, future transmission of strange diseases may occur.
